COMMITTEE ON ACADEMIC AND STUDENT AFFAIRS Tuesday, June 19, 2012 Item: AS: I-1 SUBJECT: ANNUAL ACCREDITATION STATUS UPDATE PROPOSED COMMITTEE ACTION None. Information item. BACKGROUND INFORMATION In addition to regional accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), many of our colleges, and distinct programs within our colleges, are also accredited by discipline specific organizations. Currently twenty different outside accrediting organizations review and accredit our programs. In August of each year, a report on the status of each of our accredited programs is submitted to the Florida Board of Governors. is important to prospective students and employers and frequently essential in degrees that lead to licensure. The accreditation process requires a written report frequently followed by a site visit by a team composed of representatives from the accrediting body, academics from other institutions, practitioners, and sometimes students. This year a team from the Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) Engineering Commission (EAC) visited Florida Atlantic University to review the Geomatics program in the College of Engineering and Computer Science for initial accreditation. A final report was submitted to ABET/EAC in January. A final statement is due from ABET in July following their Board meeting. For the coming academic year we are preparing for visits from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools / Commission on Colleges, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the National Association of Schools of Music, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, and the Commission on of Medical Physics Education Programs.
