Law Society Legal Research Facilities INTRODUCTION The New Zealand Law Society s Library is one of New Zealand s most comprehensive legal information resources. The Library is a private library which is not open to the general public. Library services are provided to members and associate members of the Law Society, the judiciary and Ministry of Justice court staff. By using Law Society Library services, any lawyer is able to access a comprehensive range of legal information. Much of this is available free of charge. This Practice Briefing outlines the research facilities which are available to all members of the New Zealand legal profession through the Law Society Library. To assist with understanding how to access or obtain material, the term from your desktop is used to indicate that any lawyer may access such material from any computer which is connected to the internet. LOCATIONS There are three fully staffed research libraries in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington. These provide a wide range of hardcopy and online information. A smaller library in Dunedin has part-time staffing. Online information services managed by the Law Society may be accessed and used by Law Society members at a further 31 locations in courthouses around New Zealand. LIBRARY CATALOGUE The Library Catalogue provides information on the entire Law Society collection of New Zealand and foreign legal information resources. To find if a particular publication or database is held by the Law Society Library, you can search the catalogue yourself online from your desktop. This is available at http://www. lawsocietylibrary.org.nz/catalogue/. Searches may also be conducted on a subject or topic basis. The Law Society librarians at the research libraries are also able to help you with searching or locating information in the catalogue or held in other locations. If you are unable to find something, it does not mean that the Law Society library does not hold it a trained librarian will be able to help you locate it within the Law Society collection or to source it if it is held in another New Zealand law library. COURTHOUSE ACCESS TO ONLINE DATABASES At 31 locations around New Zealand, any Law Society member may use a special computer terminal to access and research a comprehensive collection of online legal information databases. You cannot access these databases directly from your desktop because of the access arrangements the Law Society has negotiated with each of the database publishers. However, you are able to access them free of charge from one of the special computer terminals at any time. The computer is owned and maintained by the Law Society. 1

The information on the online databases is provided by the major legal publishers. In total there are 157 New Zealand databases, 43 Australian, 12 combined New Zealand and Australia, and 11 from other jurisdictions. The Law Society s own LINX case law database is included. All databases are regularly updated. This has been made possible through the Law Society s membership of the Electronic Publishing in Collaboration (EPIC) consortium. Access is member-only, and this means Law Society members may access the databases by logging on through the members-only section of the my.lawsociety website (via the Library tab). To logon to the members area of my.lawsociety, go to http://my.lawsociety.org.nz and click on to the Login link at the top of the page. When prompted, enter your Lawyer Login (this is your Law Society Registry-issued Lawyer ID) and Password (if you have forgotten your ID and/or password, instructions are given for resolving this). While a number of the specialised EPIC databases provide legal information and information directly relevant to the provision of legal services, many are an invaluable secondary source of information in developments and areas where lawyers are required to provide advice. All contain information dating from 1980 until the present, and all are updated regularly.
