Department of Marketing Kent State University Internship Information and Application Course: MKTG 45292 Credit Hours: 3 This is a controlled course for Marketing majors who are interested in gaining careerrelevant experience. It is not intended to give course credit for existing employment, unless the proposed internship involves significantly new activities, duties, or projects. The student must meet the criteria listed below, to the satisfaction of the Chairperson of the Marketing Department. The student is responsible for securing appropriate employment, although assistance may be available through the Department of Marketing or the Career Services Center. Student Eligibility 1. Overall G.P.A must be 2.85 or better and Marketing G.P.A must be 3.0 or better. 2. Marketing (MKTG 25010) and at least two other Marketing courses must be completed prior to the beginning of the Internship. 3. The student must commit to working 12 15 hours per week for at least 10 weeks in the internship, after approval is obtained. Employer Eligibility 1. The position must be with an organization that typically hires college graduates into entry level positions. The responsibilities, supervision, and training of the intern should be comparable to those of other new hires in the organization. 2. The employer may be either a profit or a non profit organization. The intern s supervisor must be an individual knowledgeable about marketing who provides written confirmation that s/he is willing to complete the Internship Evaluation Form (attached). 3. The student must be hired to work a minimum of 12 15 hours per week for at least 10 weeks. S/he should normally be paid at least the prevailing minimum wage, although non profit organizations may be exempted. 4. Prior to commencing the internship employment, the student must obtain the Chairperson's approval, as not all positions will be approved.

Procedures and Requirements 1. OBTAIN ADMISSION TO MKTG 45292: The student must submit to the Chairperson of the Marketing Department a Request for Permission to Register For Marketing Internship, a typewritten two page proposal for the internship, and a completed Prospective Internship Supervisor's Form. The two page proposal must describe (a) the job itself, especially any projects to be undertaken by the intern, (b) the specific conditions of the job, including the planned beginning and ending dates, the hours per week, the salary, and the reporting relationships, and (c) how the position is expected to enhance the student's career objectives. 2. FINAL WRITTEN REPORT: At the conclusion of the internship, the student is required to submit a 15 20 page written report. This report must include the following sections: Part I The Internship Experience. This section of the report presents a detailed description of the internship duties, work assignments, and projects completed. Its purposes are (a) to describe WHAT the intern did, (b) to show an understanding of WHY the intern engaged in these activities, and (c) to explain the OUTCOMES of the activities (both for the intern and for the company). Attachments might include samples of projects worked on or completed (e.g., brochures, questionnaires, public relations releases) during the internship. To aid in this section, the intern should to keep a "diary" during the experience. Part II Marketing Courses and the Internship. Here, the student must discuss, in detail, how at least three Marketing courses completed by the student contributed to the internship work experience. For each course, discuss what principles, ideas, or elements of the course were helpful (i.e. what did you learn that you used on the job). Also, were there ways in which courses did not provide adequate preparation (i.e. what did you need to know that you did not learn in class). Part III The Internship and Career Goals. The final section of the report must contain an appraisal of how the internship contributed to the student's career goals. In addition, it should offer an appraisal of the internship experience itself (e.g. was it well organized? worthwhile?) Here, it is important to state whether you think other students should be encouraged to undertake a similar internship with this organization, and to say why or why not. 3. GRADING: The internship will be graded on the basis of the Internship Evaluation Form (40%) and the written report (60%). Evaluation of the written report depends on content, as described above, and on its presentation. Presentation includes writing style (readability, proper spelling and grammar, etc.) as well as "packaging" (neatness, formatting, appropriate tables, diagrams, etc.) What you turn in should be a product that you would be able to show to a potential employer as a demonstration of your capabilities and the quality of your work.
