Application Guidelines and Instructions Completed scholarship application must be postmarked by March 25, 2011, unless otherwise specified. Selection of GHRA Houston Community College Scholarship is based on many factors with special emphasis on the question & essay segment which deals with the student s philosophy, goals and academic achievements, as well as motivation to serve and succeed in this industry. The need for assistance will be considered after all other considerations. All finalists will be notified and will be expected to interview with a member of the Education Committee on April 6 th from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The recipients will be expected to attend the GHRA President s Dinner on June 1 st from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. where they will be presented the scholarship. Each scholarship winner will receive two complimentary tickets to the dinner. ELIGIBILITY The Student Must: Be a full-time or part time student at Houston Community College Demonstrate the ability to succeed with college level work. School transcripts must accompany the application. (Including SAT or ACT scores as well as other academic evidence will be considered in the selection process.) Demonstrate leadership ability, and a good general job history. Student should show participation in either school/civic organization and/or have a broad range of goals. Student must be present for an interview with members of the Education Committee. Student must be a resident of Texas. Student must be enrolled in any degreed foodservice or hospitality program. The scholarship is awarded one year at a time. The recipients may reapply for scholarship every year; however, satisfactory progress must be shown to be considered. (a) The student must have a minimum C average overall. (b) The student must have a minimum B average in his/her major. Student must show proof of enrolled hours after the last drop date each semester, before payment is issued. Your name, permanent address, and phone number must accompany all attachments (Including recommendation letters, essays and official sealed transcript from HCC). All paperwork must be turned in together and paper clipped. Signed letters of recommendation from current or previous employer, faculty, or an official of the university that the student is attending is required. Official sealed transcript from current high school or university. o Must send transcripts covering a minimum of the previous two academic years (must include high school transcript if a freshman). SCHOLARSHIP AWARD Recipient of the HCC Scholarship will receive funds in the amount of $500.00. Recipient will receive a certificate of award at the President s Dinner date to be determined. Scholarship awards are paid directly to the culinary school or program. No funds are paid directly to scholarship recipients 1
