Investigator Portfolio Page 2 DeLoid collaborates with industry and academic groups to create and conduct protocols for preclinical research and testing. She consults with sponsors, writes protocols, performs or assists in unique and innovative surgical procedures and imaging studies, supervises challenging anesthesia cases, provides an objective evaluation of the gathered data and manages clinical animal care. Studies involving large animals, such as pigs, sheep, and nonhuman primates, are conducted in a GLP-compliant large animal facility. This is my dream job, says DeLoid. It s an opportunity that I couldn t refuse. I get the opportunity to work and learn with other experts, to be closely involved in developing new and innovative devices and to find solutions to make surgical procedures work better.
Working in experimental preclinical research is challenging and stimulating because it puts you on the cutting edge of innovative ideas that will someday benefit a wide range of people. DeLoid s experiences in both industry and clinical practice have uniquely prepared her for her role in Preclinical Translational Services. DeLoid s first position in industry was as a surgical research technician at Charles River Laboratories, a contract research organization where she worked alongside world-renowned preclinical surgeons. There, DeLoid gained valuable hands-on surgical experience and an understanding of preclinical research. DeLoid then moved into a biocompatibility specialist position at Boston Scientific, where her interest in translational research deepened. At Boston Scientific, she evaluated the safety of new and updated medical devices. From her interactions with colleagues and outside testing facilities, she received a depth of experience in study and operational management. DeLoid left industry to complete a degree in veterinary medicine at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. After graduation, she pursued clinical experience. She was an associate veterinarian at the North Shore Animal Hospital in Lynn, Massachusetts. During this time she honed her surgical and diagnostic skills. DeLoid sees her role at Preclinical Translational Services as the ideal opportunity to utilize the many skills she learned during her time in industry: Preclinical Research: creating study protocols, developing animal models and performing innovative experimental surgeries Study Management: analyzing data, directing studies, consulting with sponsors and collaborating with CRO partners Clinical Practice: determining diagnoses, performing clinical surgeries and practicing general patient care Page 3 Investigator Portfolio Background
