Software AG Product Support Background This document describes the Software AG software requirements for support of IBM High Performance FICON for System z (zhpf). With IBM z/os release 1.13, IBM provides support for EXCPVR programs that exploit zhpf functionality. For performance reasons, Adabas has also been enhanced to use this technology in support of IBM System z functionality. IBM also provides support for zhpf EXCPVR in IBM z/os 1.12 and IBM z/os 1.11 via IBM APAR. This will be described later in this document. In October of 2012, IBM has released an IBM APAR for providing support for EXCP zhpf within z/os which will also be supported by Adabas in the current release. IBM Hardware and Software Requirements for zhpf IBM System z Processor Hardware Requirements The High Performance FICON support exploited by Software AG products requires that one of the following hardware processor families be used: IBM System zenterprise EC12 Family of Processor Models IBM System zenterprise z196 GA2 Family of Processor Models IBM System z114 Family of Processor Models Note- The microcode support has not been back leveled to older hardware families IBM System z Storage Subsystem Hardware Requirements for zhpf A DS8700 and DS8800 that supports zhpf and the associated FICON channels are required with the microcode level of 6.2 or higher. IBM System z/os Software Requirements One of the following z/os operating system levels is required: IBM z/os 1.13 with EXCPVR support IBM z/os 1.12 based upon IBM APAR OA33642 which rolls back support from z/os 1.13 IBM z/os 1.11 based upon IBM APAR OA33642 which rolls back support from z/os 1.13 IBM z/os 1.13 with EXCP support (11/2012) IBM z/os 1.12 based upon IBM APAR OA38185 which rolls back support from z/os 1.3 (11/2102) ETS Product Support for IBM System z High Performance FICON 1

Software AG Product Support Software AG Product zhpf Support The following table describes zhpf support requirements for Software AG products: Product Required Level Access/Functionality Comment Adabas 8.2 SP6 Direct access 1 Sequential data sets 2 Adabas 8.2 SP5 Direct access 1 Sequential data sets 2 Natural 8.2 SP3 Sequential data sets 3 Natural 8.2 SP2 Sequential data sets 3 Comments 1. These are the direct access data sets that Adabas issues EXCP or EXCPVR against, such as ASSO, DATA, WORK, CLOG, and PLOG data sets. With Adabas 8.2 SP5 or SP6 and zhpf volumes, these data sets can be allocated under IBM z/os 1.13 or previous systems with OA33642 applied as referenced above. 2. With IBM z/os 1.13 and above, sequential data sets that can be written or read by Adabas 8.2 SP5 or SP6 can exploit zhpf volumes if other zhpf requirements are met. 3. With IBM z/os 1.13 and above, sequential data sets that can be written or read by Natural 8.2 SP2 or SP3 can exploit zhpf volumes if other zhpf requirements are met as listed in the document. Software AG Product Support Determining zhpf Support under z/os for the System and the Related Storage Subsystem The following IBM z/os operator commands can be used to determine whether zhpf support is implemented. To determine whether the disk device supports zhpf: D M=DEV(dddd) To determine if the channel supports zhpf: D M=CHP(cc) To determine whether the Control Unit supports zhpf: D M=CU(cccc) To determine whether you have enabled zhpf for your z/os environment: D IOS,ZHPF 4 ETS Product Support for IBM System z High Performance FICON

Software AG Product Support Known Problems In the case of running Adabas in a system with the zhpf EXCP support enabled, there is a reported problem with an S800 abend. For this abend to occur, the system must be generated with 1M pages based upon the LFAREA parameter setting in the IBM z/os system. 6 ETS Product Support for IBM System z High Performance FICON
