A data collection, online real-time monitor, chargeback and reporting system for CICS communications system. Basic mode logs every transaction; interval mode logs cumulative data at the end of specified time intervals or after the execution of a specified number of transactions. For z/os, it supports CICS up through CICS Transaction Server 2.2. For VSE, it supports CICS up through release 4.1. Also for VSE, release 7.0 provides support for CICS Transaction Server 1.1. Displays CICS performance data. Screens are automatically refreshed, providing continuous monitoring and trend analysis. GOLD Tutor helps users in creating displays. A storage management component allocates storage in reusable pools designed to specifically support Unicenter CA-JARS Resource Management for CICS. All storage is allocated in the Extended Dynamic Storage Area (EDSA). Table 6: Features and Functions: Unicenter CA-JARS SMF Utility (formerly CA- JARS/SMF) Implementation Implemented as a stand-alone system, but can be integrated with Unicenter CA- JARS for z/os and OS/390 systems or as a data feed to other z/os and OS/390 resource management products. Data Extraction Dumps and inventories data written to SMF, allowing extraction of data by various selection criteria. It does not require the user to have detailed information about where SMF data is located. System Support Supports z/os up through version 1.4. Automatic Tape When magnetic tape is desired for storage of SMF data, Unicenter CA-JARS SMF Management Utility uses tape storage by stacking multiple SMF history files on a single tape volume. It also automatically determines which tape volume is to be used for dump/extract processing. Duplexing A duplicate copy of SMF data can be automatically created during SMF dump processing. Table 7: Features and Functions: Unicenter CA-JARS User Interface z/os (OS/390) Online System Unicenter CA- JARS/OLF Unicenter CA-JARS for z/os and OS/390 provides an interactive, menu-driven Interactive System Productivity Facility (ISPF) dialogue panel that allows reports to be generated and browsed. Online Help and a tutorial are also available. This online chargeback facility, which is delivered as an integrated, no-cost component with Unicenter CA-JARS for z/os and OS/390, provides users with a PC-like user interface and a relational database; it also provides chargeback functions, including forecasting and rate determination. It incorporates pull-down menus that open windows for various functions. Prompt facilities display pop-up menus with choice lists to aid in entering data. It also incorporates CA Database Management Services, which support standard SQL capabilities. A rate structure can be defined as flexible, while accounting structures can be defined to meet organizational environments. Forecasting features are based on past resource use for budget and rate determination purposes. It also provides online budget control via enhanced query facilities. Billing adjustments are handled at several levels, including debits and credits, overhead allocation and cost recovery. It can be extended to process other data resources with Unicenter CA-PMA Chargeback. 1 October

Extends Unicenter CA-JARS/OLF capabilities by providing the capability to input user-defined data as well as the Unicenter CA-JARS history file. Analysis The original CA-JARS product was always designed for use with IBM mainframes and has been available for many years. After it was acquired by Computer Associates Intl. (CA), the product evolved, through CA enhancements and extensions, into a current technology suite of products servicing all major IBM and compatible mainframe enterprise environments. The Unicenter CA-JARS products go far beyond simple resource accounting, reporting and chargeback functionality, which were its original target areas. These products now also provide performance monitoring and measurement functions. They also provide comprehensive job-accounting information, statistical management reports for performance and throughput analysis, workload- and job-scheduling profiles, service-level and program/programmer monitoring, configuration analysis and resource planning, and financial management. The Unicenter CA- JARS family of systems is built around a Report Program that accepts accounting input from various sources. The products directed to various subsystems all provide functionally similar capabilities, but the controlled environments and the internal interfaces differ from product to product. The resulting data is channeled through the report writers to provide compatible accounting information. Unicenter CA-JARS is also a billing, cost distribution and performance measurement system that allows data center management to track, and account for, all the resources used in the IBM mainframe environments. The base operating packages come with interfaces to process data from many accounting sources, including IBM s DB2, IMS/VS-DL/1, TSO, International City Code File (ICCF), CICS, POWER/VSE and IBM Tivoli NetView; CA s Advantage CA-Datacom/DB Database, Advantage CA- IDMS/DB Database, Advantage CA-Roscoe Interactive Environment, BrightStor CA-1 Tape Management, BrightStor CA-Dynam/Tape Library Management System (TLMS) Tape Management and Software AG s ADABAS. Advantage CA-UFO, Advantage CA-Gener/OL and Cincom s Mantis can be interfaced with Unicenter CA-JARS Resource Management for CICS. For the past several years, CA has enhanced the Unicenter CA-JARS product line with significant extensions, such as an online chargeback facility. Unicenter CA-JARS includes z/os and OS/390 support for processing RMF data, thereby expanding the system s performance reporting capabilities and 1 October

7 providing support for IBM s z/os and OS/390 Unix System Services, TCP/IP protocol and highly parallel coupling system (HPCS) Sysplex reporting and chargeback reporting. Two platforms are supported today: one for z/os and OS/390, the other for VSE. (Unicenter CA-JARS Resource Accounting for VM has been stabilized with a migration path to Unicenter VM:Account.) Unicenter CA-JARS for z/os and OS/390 release 7.2 added support for data on IBM s WebSphere Message Queuing (MQ) SMF Types 115 records, cache reporting from Type 74-5 RMF records and Hitachi VOS3 operating system data. It also provided the capability to create comma-separated value (CSV) files from report queries, for use with popular workstation spreadsheets and graphing tools. With the addition of the Unicenter CA-JARS/OLF (online facility) option, the management and accounting system provides users with easier information access to Unicenter CA-JARS data. Starting with Unicenter CA-JARS Resource Management for CICS for z/os and OS/390 release 6.2, CA made enhancements to this product to ease implementation. CA also makes available a product called Unicenter CA-PMA Chargeback, which offers all the same capabilities of Unicenter CA-JARS/OLF, plus the capability to accept user-defined data as input in addition to Unicenter CA-JARS data. The latest Service Package for Unicenter CA-JARS for z/os and OS/390 added support for WebSphere Application Server for z/os and OS/390, as well as enhanced support for WebSphere MQ for z/os and OS/390 (SMF Type 116 records). CA has structured Unicenter CA-JARS in the marketplace as more than just the job-accounting and chargeback program it originally was. Unicenter CA-JARS is now integrally tied in with monitoring and measurement functions that allow operations management to better schedule and plan resource usage. With all the available options, tailored Unicenter CA-JARS systems can be customized to meet specific enterprise system requirements. For customers desiring a Web-enabled interface for accounting and chargeback, CA offers ican Provider Suite from its wholly owned subsidiary, ican SP. To facilitate the billing of mainframe resources from the distributed environment, Unicenter CA-JARS can extract accounting detail or summary data for use by the ican Meter component of ican Provider Suite. Its ican View component provides a structured portal facility for simple delivery of charts, reports and desired information. 8 Competitors PACE Applied Technology Komand III Strengths Supports a Multitude of Configurations The flexibility of Unicenter CA-JARS, and the capability to use it in a diversity of configurations, is part of its greatest strength. There is a Unicenter CA-JARS system for practically every IBM and compatible mainframe environment (including z/os, OS/390, MVS, VSE, z/vm and VM). The z/os and OS/390 version can be expanded to encompass TSO, CICS, DB2, IMS, WebSphere MQ, WebSphere Application Server and IBM Tivoli NetView, as well as a full range of non-ibm DBMSs. The VSE version also supports CICS and Advantage CA-IDMS/DB Database for VSE. In addition, the z/os and OS/390 system can be expanded with online facilities, PC-like front-end functionality and full-function report writer options. Highly Customizable With all the available options and extensions associated with Unicenter CA-JARS, users can easily customize their systems to operate in online, batch or a combination of both batch and online modes. Users also have the flexibility of determining which aspects of control are desirable to monitor and derive performance information so as to determine how to improve system operations without incurring added expenditures. Online Chargeback Extension Includes Database Management Unicenter CA-JARS/OLF is an online chargeback extension to Unicenter CA-JARS for z/os and OS/390 that uses User Interface Management Services to incorporate interactive techniques, such as pull-down menus that open windows for various functions, direct navigation and prompting. This option incorporates the CA Database Management Services, which support standard SQL capabilities. Compliant With Both IBM and CA Architectures With the introduction of Unicenter CA-JARS for z/os and OS/390 release 7.1, the product supported IBM s z/os and OS/390 Unix Systems Services methodology, as well as new report writer facilities, and the TCP/IP protocol. Release 7.2 added support for WebSphere MQ (formerly MQSeries), cache reporting from Type 74-5 RMF records and Hitachi VOS3 operating system data. Query results may now be stored in CSV files for use with popular workstation tools. The latest Service Pack integrates support for WebSphere Application Server for z/os and OS/390, as well as current support for WebSphere MQ, IMS and CICS. Limitations Modules Do Not Run Above 16MB Extended Architecture Dividing Line Unicenter CA-JARS is a mature product that had been significantly enhanced in prior years to ensure its z/os and OS/390 users of the most current technology and the capability to monitor and control resources throughout the installation. However, CA has not yet modified Unicenter CA-JARS for VSE to take full advantage of the extended memory characteristics of the IBM VSE/ESA mainframe environment. This could allow users to save on memory usage and generally enhance overall productivity; however, CA claims that its efficient use of memory largely negates any advantage gained from 31-bit storage. Lacks DB2-VSE/VM Analyzing Facilities 1 October

9 Unicenter CA-JARS s accounting and monitoring capabilities have been extended to encompass most major technology enhancements in the z/os and CICS mainframe environments; however, despite the many DBMSs Unicenter CA-JARS supports, there is no facility for analyzing DB2-VSE/VM activity in the VSE or VM environment. In fact, outside of providing support for Print Services Facility (PSF) records, compatibility for new VSE/ESA Versions (current to 2.6), as well as CICS 4.1 and Year 2000 compatibility, there have been only some minor enhancements applied to Unicenter CA-JARS for VSE in the last three years. Insight Computer Associates Unicenter CA-JARS family provides a range of analysis and reporting functionality for the z/os, OS/390 and other mainframe environments. The vendor s extensive support services also make the product more appealing. One caveat for those who are running a VSE environment is that, while compatibility is maintained with current versions of the operating system and supported subsystems, in recent years the vendor has not focused as much on the VSE module as on the others in the Unicenter CA-JARS family. 1 October
