Welcome to TRiO/Student Support Services The mission of Trio/Student Support Services is to work in partnership with students to achieve academic success, improve student retention, and promote personal growth. Our services support the program goals of retention in college, graduation from college, and transfer to 4 year colleges and universities. How We Can Help Individualized Academic Planning Managing all areas of your life can be overwhelming. We can help you build balanced plans that will allow you to meet your academic goals and personal life circumstances. Financial Planning Our financial literacy services not only offer assistance in applying for federal aid but finding scholarships and managing money for school and life. Tutoring Our peer tutors will help you understand class content and can help you build important study skills. We offer free tutoring in math and science. Transfer Planning It is never too early to start thinking about your transfer plans. We offer services to help you plan for transfer and build a network at the four year institution so when you enroll you have advocates who are working with you to continue your academic success. Workshops and Activities To help keep you motivated and meet people who are working towards the same goals, we offer a variety of opportunities. Check our event calendar on our website at www.slcc.edu/trio. Who We Serve Students who meet the following criteria are encouraged to apply for services. US citizens or permanent residents or meet residency requirements for Federal student financial aid. First generation college students You are considered a first generation college student if neither of your parents (or the parent you live with) received a 4 year degree prior to your 18 th birthday. It doesn't matter if anyone else in your family, like a brother or a sister, has a 4-year degree, just your parents. Low Income Income guidelines are set by the Federal Government. If you qualify to receive federal financial aid, the chances are good that you meet the necessary income guidelines. Graduating from SLCC and Transferring to a Four Year School You need to be an admitted, degree seeking students who will graduate from SLCC and transfer to a 4 year institution to be eligible. **te: Students who meet the first generation OR the federal income guidelines AND all of the other criteria may qualify. All students applying for TRiO Student Support Services must submit income verification. Answer the questions below: Were you born before January 1, 1992? As of today, are you married? (answer yes if you are separated, but not yet divorced.) At the beginning of the 2015-2016 school year, will you be working on a master s or doctorate program (such as an MA, MBA, MD, JD, PhD, EdD, or graduate certificate, etc.)? Are you currently serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces for purposes other than training? Are you a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces? Do you have children who will receive more than half of their support from you between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016? Do you have dependents (other than your children or spouse) who live with you and who receive more than half of their support from you, now and through June 30, 2016? At any time since you turned age 13, were both your parents deceased, were you in foster care or were you a dependent or ward of the court? As determined by a court in your state of legal residence, are you or were you an emancipated minor? As determined by a court in your state of legal residence, are you or were you in legal guardianship? At any time on or after July 1, 2014, did your high school or school district homeless liaison determine that you were an unaccompanied youth who was homeless? At any time on or after July 1, 2014, did the director of an emergency shelter or transitional housing program funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development determine that you were an unaccompanied youth who was homeless? At any time on or after July 1, 2014, did the director of a runaway or homeless youth basic center or transitional living program determine that you were an unaccompanied youth who was homeless or were self-supporting and at risk of being homeless? After answering the questions, check the box that applies: If you answer NO to every question, you are a DEPENDENT student. Bring in a signed copy of your parent s U.S. (federal) tax return for last year. If you answer YES to ANY question, you are an INDEPENDENT student.
