Product Design Engineering (PDE) Degrees at QUB School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering UCAS Applicants, Saturday 1 March 2014 Paul Hermon Programme Director

What is Product Design Engineering? A variant of Mechanical Engineering (MEE) which focuses on design and the structured process of new product development Additional Design-Build-Test projects and fewer engineering science modules after stage 1 Preparation for professional practice designing technically innovative, mass produced consumer goods

Product Design Engineering at QUB Product Design Engineering (PDE) covers the range of activities involved in converting a market need or opportunity into a product that can be manufactured and delivered to customers This includes: Analysing the market Developing a product concept Building prototypes Detailed design and analysis Planning for mass manufacture

Product Design Engineering at QUB A project-based approach is embedded throughout with taught modules linked to the project work Most projects are team based so that students experience the working environment of professional practice Students are more motivated and prefer project-based learning to the purely lecture-based approach of a traditional university education

Rethinking Engineering Education CDIO is an international network of over 100 collaborating universities dedicated to improving the education of engineering students by teaching in the context of Conceiving, Designing, Implementing and Operating products QUB Co-Chair UK & Ireland Region of CDIO

Professional Accreditation The BEng and MEng PDE degrees are accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers A degree from an accredited course is required as the basis of Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Graduate comments When enrolling in PDE at Queens I was promised a new, different and exciting course. After completing my masters year I was satisfied that it delivered. PDE not only gave me the technical knowledge I needed to secure and perform my current position but it also helped cultivate the skills and traits needed to succeed in the workplace. Shane Black B/E Aerospace The Product Design course focused on theory but more importantly the application of theory in real life scenarios. From the outset we were able to develop new products which were not only aesthetically pleasing, ergonomic etc, but most importantly were financially viable. The course taught us how to take and develop a sketch on a piece of paper into a product in any industry. Although we are not experts in a particular field of engineering, we are experts in the design and development process which is unique within engineering. Frank McCullagh - ID Product Development

Employer comments The Product Design Engineering course at QUB has been tailored to better meet the needs of the employer. The course ensures the students study modules most suited to the real life Mechanical Product Design Engineer and hence the induction time for a new engineer is significantly reduced. The work placement also has a big impact in giving the student a real life design environment. If this course had been available when I was a student it would have been my first choice Richard Bovill, Design Engineering Manager, Munster Simms Eng. Ltd. All three (placement) students were talented individuals who were very capable of taking a short design brief, interpreting the key details and basically getting on with it with little or no intervention by the Manager. The students on the PDE course that we have collaborated with have all come into the company and provided us with different design methodologies that we can embed within the company and utilise to our benefit. Hugh Ross, Managing Director, Canyon Europe Ltd.

Summary Preparation for professional practice Development of team working, independent learning, critical thinking and problem solving skills An optimised combination of creative, technical and business skills. Integrated curriculum with team based projects as the core Expertise in the process of New Product Development
