PROJECT HOMELESS CONNECT INSTRUCTIONS FOR LEGAL VOLUNTEERS Thank you for participating in this important effort. We are delighted you are involved. Here are a few reminders regarding what will happen at the Project Homeless Connect event: 1. Volunteer coordinators will be available during the day for any questions you have. They are wearing purple name tags. Connie Talmage, Colorado Lawyers Committee Tim Macdonald, Arnold & Porter LLP Peter Schwartz, Davis Graham & Stubbs LLP Alice Norman, Denver Municipal Public Defender, Law Office of Frank Moya Peter Komlos-Hrobsky, Colorado Legal Services Carmel Gill, Association of Corporate Counsel Colorado Chapter Liza Prado, Colorado Lawyers Committee Marcela Mendoza, Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, P.C. Linda Teater, Arnold & Porter LLP Susan Cole, Arnold & Porter LLP 2. Our job is to provide legal referrals. If you have questions about the difference between legal referrals and legal advice, please ask one of the volunteer coordinators. 3. You will be paired with another volunteer. Since many of us are relatively new to the issues we will encounter, we hope this pairing will make your job easier. 4. One of our goals for Project Homeless Connect is to give each person a positive experience. There are many preconceived notions about being homeless in our society, and the individuals who participate in Project Homeless Connect often live out a traumatic and isolating reality. Often the smallest gesture goes a long way to making a homeless person (or any person) feel better about a frustrating legal matter. Eye contact, active listening and being sensitive to the diversity of issues facing people who are homeless are simple ways to improve someone s experience at Project Homeless Connect. 5. You will receive a Legal Resource Directory that contains referral information for 18 subject areas. Once you have identified the presenting issue, please refer to the Directory (organized and tabbed by subject) to determine the referral information you want to provide. If you need help locating an appropriate referral, please feel free to consult with one of the volunteer coordinators. 6. You may also want to consider whether there are other services available at the event that are appropriate referrals. A memo describing those services is included in the Legal Resource Directory, and is located on the back insert of this binder. Also feel free to use one of the computers to search for a resource you are aware of that is not included in the binder. 7. You will give each participant you see a Legal Resources Information Sheet. These forms are in the front pocket of the Directory and are available in Spanish (green) and English (blue). Please be sure to fill out the description of the legal problem and then clearly indicate the organization you think the individual should contact. 8. We ask you to keep track of your interactions on the Volunteer Log Sheet. Copies are also located in the front pocket. Ask for the first name only and if an individual is unwilling to give his/her name, just put unknown or some other comment in the first column. We hope you have a great day and enjoy your participation. Thanks again! This Legal Resources Directory was printed compliments of Ricoh Legal Services. Many thanks to Ricoh for its generosity and ongoing support! COLORADO LAWYERS COMMITTEE LEGAL RESOURCE DIRECTORY

Family Issues - Children E-mail: penn_j@cde.state.co.us Individuals can file complaints with appropriate school district region (i.e. based on geography and school). Parent Grievance Process in Colorado is -- both by citizen preference and state law -- a "local control" state. This means that many pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade public education decisions -- on issues such as curriculum, personnel, school calendars, graduation requirements, and classroom policy -- are made by the 178 school districts and their local school boards. The State Board of Education and CDE are in place to provide guidance and direction for the local districts, and to act as a link to many Federal and State services. In cases of a grievance against a school, CDE is almost always a point of last resort. Before bringing any question regarding school policy or a specific decision affecting a student to the attention of the Department, the issue should be pursued by contacting the responsible parties in this order: 1. Teacher 2. School Principal 3. District Superintendent 4. Local School Board Members 5. The Colorado Department of Education 6. Legal Action If you have followed the first four steps and still feel that your issue is not being given the attention it deserves, you should then contact the CDE Performance Support Manager for your region of the state. Contact information for this person can be found on our CDE Colorado Education Regions Web Page. CLS assists victims of human trafficking to report their crime and to apply for temporary and long-term immigration relief. CLS also provides information and legal assistance to individuals wishing to sue their traffickers for lost wages and damages as a result of the trafficking. Human trafficking is a form of modern day slavery. Victims are often lured into forced labor and/or sexual exploitation by false promises, force or threats of harm to themselves and their families. Signs of a potential trafficking situation include the confiscation of identity or immigration documents, physical confinement, threats and/or acts of harm agains a person or his or her family, debt bondage or involuntary servitude in a legal or illegal work setting. Victims of trafficking may be eligible for immigration relief such as the U or T Visa. T Visa holders receive special Immigration status for 4 years that allows the visa holder to live and work lawfully within the United States. T Visa holders are also eligible for public benefits and social services to the extent of a refugee. Depending on the age and situation of the T Visa applicant, qualified family members are eligible to be included.
