The Coordinator of Disability Services is located in the Counseling Center on the second floor of the Scott Academic Center and can be reached at extension 4489 or by email at disabilityservices@vanguard.edu For students with a documented learning disability who would like to request appropriate accommodations, please contact the Director of Learning Skills, located upstairs in Scott Academic Center at extension 2540 or by email at disabilityservices@vanguard.edu DIVERSITY STATEMENT The School for Professional Studies intends to foster a Christ-centered community that promotes appreciation and respect for individuals, enhances the potential of all members, and values differences in gender, race, abilities, and generation. As such, we endeavor to communicate with honesty, to speak with encouraging and edifying words, and to create a safe environment in our classes and interactions. ATTENDANCE POLICY Because this course meets only five times, it is important that students not miss class unless it is unavoidable. To receive the full participation points students must arrive on time to class with a working knowledge of each sessions assignments and they must actively engage in class discussions. Students who miss more than five class hours in any given course will automatically receive a failing grade and need to retake the course to obtain a passing grade. If an instructor deems that a student s absence, beyond the 5 hours was under extremely unavoidable and unusual circumstances (i.e. hospitalization, death in the family, major auto accident), the professor may file an academic petition on behalf of the student to the Program Chair. If the academic petition is approved, the instructor may give the student a W (Withdrawal) grade in place of a failing grade. The student will be required to re-take the course. Students who miss the first two class sessions, or the first five hours of a course, will automatically be dropped and be required to retake the course. LATE PAPER POLICY You are responsible for submitting assignments on time (by 6:00 pm). Unless authorized by the Professor in advance, no credit will be given for assignments not turned in when due. 3

DESCRIPTION OF ASSIGNMENTS General Guidelines: All papers are to follow APA Guidelines. Papers require a title page, which, while numbered, is not to be counted in determining the length of the paper. Because the papers involve expression of personal reactions and opinions, they may be written in the first person. Papers do not require an abstract. Papers do not require additional references beyond the class text(s); the text(s) must be cited in the body of the paper as well as on the Reference Page. If additional references are used, they also must be cited in your paper and listed on the Reference Page. Papers #3 and 4 involve application of counseling theories presented in Corey to a clinical vignette provided by your professor. For each of these papers, you may establish in the first paragraph that you will be citing terms/concepts from Corey throughout your paper, but you need only give a formal citation once. (Note that this is a departure from normal APA guidelines and applies to these papers only.) Should you include any direct quotes in your paper, whether from Corey or an additional source, each quote must be appropriately cited. Paper #1 (Due Week 2) You are to write a two-page essay on one of the following questions. Your response should reflect a thorough understanding of text and class discussion as well as your own reflection on the issue being addressed. 1. Discuss the personal needs and motivations for your wanting to seek a career in counseling or the helping professions. How might your needs help and/or hinder you in your attempt to provide effective help to others? 2. Alternative question for students who do not plan to pursue a career in the helping professions: Describe key times when other people have helped you in making significant changes in your life. What in their actions or attitudes made them particularly helpful? What made it possible for you to receive and accept help in these circumstances? Paper #2 (Due Week 2) You are to write a reaction paper to the first two sections (Chapters 1-5) of the book Biblical Concepts for Christian Counseling. This paper is to be a minimum of 4 pages in length and should Concisely summarize key concepts of the first 5 chapters Describe your reactions to the key concepts, identifying points that impressed you as strong (or weak) or stimulated additional questions for you. Describe your personal reactions. This could include relevant personal examples, areas of new learning, and/or a description of your emotional response to the reading. Describe how your worldview is evolving as you read different sources on integration; review the worldview paper you wrote in Human Services class to recall what you were thinking near the beginning of the program. 5

Paper # 3 (Due Week 3) Using the vignette provided in class, you are to write a description of how a specific theory applies to the client described in the vignette. You may choose any of the three theories studied on week 2 (Psychoanalytic, Adlerian, or Existential). This paper will be 3-4 pages in length and will include: A description of key issues and treatment needs presented by the client from the perspective of the selected theory. This should demonstrate your understanding of the key concepts, therapeutic process, techniques, and procedures of that theory (as described by Corey and in class). o Use terminology appropriate to the theoretical orientation; place key terms in italics o In thinking about the client, focus first on the major issues. Is there a crisis or potential crisis? How would a therapist working from the selected theory conceptualize and address the major issues? o Are there ethical issues that must be addressed? o You may write this paper in the first person, assuming the role of the therapist. o You may provide hypothetical examples. These hypothetical examples must build on and be consistent with the information provided in the vignette. For example When I asked (client) her earliest recollection, she told me. A concluding paragraph in which you describe your assessment of the strengths and limitations of working with this theory for this specific client Additional Guidelines for Vignette Assignment (Applies to both paper #3 and #4) For each of these papers, you may establish in the first paragraph that you will be citing terms/concepts from Corey throughout your paper, but you need only give a formal citation once. (Note that this is a departure from normal APA guidelines and applies to these papers only.) Should you include any direct quotes in your paper, whether from Corey or an additional source, each quote must be appropriately cited. Do not include a DSM diagnosis. Do not create a new theory or blend together different theories. The goal is to increase your understanding of the theory you choose by applying it to the specific client in the vignette. While you will certainly include summarizing statements about the theory, be careful that you do not merely summarize the theory. Likewise, while you will include descriptive material from the vignette, do not merely summarize the description of the client. The goal here is to apply the theory to the specific information you are given about the client. Review the Rubric for Grading Vignette Assignments 6

Paper #4 Using the vignette provided in class, you are to write a paper comparing the client from two theoretical perspectives. You may choose any of the theoretical perspectives covered in class, with the exception of the theory you chose for paper #3. The length of the paper is 5-7 pages and is to include: 1. An introductory paragraph in which you describe the focus of your paper. 2. A description of key issues and treatment needs presented by the client from the perspective of the selected theory. 3. A description of key issues presented by the client (as in #2) from the perspective of a second theory. 4. A concluding paragraph(s) in which you identify your opinion regarding the most appropriate theoretical orientation for this client. Remember that the Additional Guidelines for Vignette Assignment, described on the previous page, apply to both Paper #3 and #4. See also the Grading Rubric for Vignette Assignment on the next page. In Class Exam At the beginning of week 5, an objective exam will be given which will cover material from assigned reading from the Corey text. The exam will consist of multiple choice questions, which cover the theories covered in Chapters 4-13. (Chapter 14 dealing with Family System will not be included in the exam). The Companion website for the 8 th edition of the text provides examples of multiple choice questions similar to the ones that will appear on the exam. In addition to your class notes, these will serve as your study guide. Excellent Good Satisfactory Below Expectations Writing/APA Comments/ Point total Grading Rubric for Vignette Assignments Content demonstrates thorough understanding of selected theory, making specific & appropriate application of key concepts and techniques to the client. Applications consistently reflect an individualized approach for the specific client as opposed to general statements that would be true for any client being treated from this theoretical orientation. Suggested techniques are described with detail for the client. Appropriate terminology for the theory is consistently utilized. Student has placed self in role of therapist and response demonstrates careful reflection on client/ therapist dynamic. Multicultural, ethical, and any crisis issues are addressed thoroughly and insightfully. Content demonstrates good understanding of selected theory, making appropriate application of key concepts and techniques to the client. Many/most applications and suggested techniques reflect an individualized approach for the specific client. Appropriate terminology for the theory is utilized frequently. There is evidence of reflection on the client/therapist dynamic. Multicultural, ethical, and any crisis issues are recognized and addressed appropriately. Content demonstrates good understanding of the major concepts and techniques of the selected theory, and these are applied in a general way to the client. Any errors in describing the theory or using terminology are minor. Multicultural, ethical, and crisis issues are noted Several factors may result in response that fails to meet expectations. Examples include: Response provides summary of theory and/or details of client vignette, but makes little/no direct application. Response has significant errors in description and/or application of theory. Response provides some correct application of theory, but addresses only small percentage of relevant concepts and techniques. While the primary focus of this assignment is on content, writing is always a factor in grading assessments. Paper should reflect standards for university level writing and conform to APA guidelines for clear and concise writing. Paper requires a title page and a reference page. The only source required for this assignment is the Corey text, but it must be cited in the introduction to the assignment and on a Reference Page. Students are discouraged from using additional sources, but should additional sources be utilized, they must be cited in the paper and on the Reference Page. Paper # 3 150 points possible Paper # 4 300 points possible 8
