SUN COBALT Qube 3 Appliance - Frequently Asked Questions Q. Should I connect my internal LAN to the Ethernet port I or port II? A. The Sun Cobalt Qube 3 appliance is pre-configured to be connected to the internal network (your private LAN) using its Ethernet port I (also called primary Ethernet) and to the external network (your ISP Internet access) using its Ethernet port II (also called secondary Ethernet). Q. What is a VPN and what can I use it for? A. A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is created to provide authorized external users secure access to internal private resources. A VPN typically uses mechanisms such as authentication and encryption to ensure data integrity and confidentiality. Using a VPN, a remote user can work as if he was working from the office. Q. Can I create a VPN using the Sun Cobalt Qube 3 appliance? A. Yes, two types of VPNs can be created. You can provide remote users secure access to the internal LAN using the Remote Access VPN based on PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol). Network-to-Network VPN is designed to create secure network-to-network connections and uses IPSec. Network-to-Network VPN is available on the Sun Cobalt Qube 3 Business Edition and Professional Edition only. Q. Can I give external users access to internal services without using VPN? A. Yes. Port forwarding allows you to forward network traffic from an arbitrary network port on one network interface of your Sun Cobalt Qube 3 appliance to another computer. Port forwarding must be used very carefully as it does not provide any type of security mechanism. Q. Can I be locked out of my Sun Cobalt Qube appliance while configuring the firewall? A. No. A Firewall safeguard verifies that the Web browser used by the Administrator is still able to communicate with the appliance after the firewall settings have been applied. The firewall can be disabled using the LCD console in the event a firewall rule made the Sun Cobalt Qube 3 appliance inaccessible. COBALT Qube 3 FAQ SUN COBALT Qube 3 Appliance FAQ Q. Which USB printers can be shared on the Sun Cobalt Qube 3 appliance? A. Virtually any USB printer can be connected and shared on the Sun Cobalt Qube 3 appliance. How do I install my printer drivers on the Sun Cobalt Qube 3 appliance? A. The Sun Cobalt Qube 3 appliance does not require any printer driver. To ease administration it is suggested that you make the printer driver available from a shared folder on the Sun Cobalt Qube 3 appliance or, if you are in a Windows client environment, that you use the "Add a Printer" Wizard to upload the driver to the appliance. Q. Why is the Sun Cobalt Qube 3 asking for a PPD file when sharing a printer? A. PPD files are optional files that simplify the task of connecting a client computer (mostly Macintosh) to a shared PostScript printer. PPD (PostScript Printer Description) files provide information such as paper sizes, resolution capabilities, font list PPD files can be found on Adobe s Web site at these 2 locations: Macintosh:http://www.adobe.com/products/printerdrivers/macppd.html; Windows: http://www.adobe.com/products/printerdrivers/winppd.html.
