A LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR Dear Applicant, Thank you for your interest in the Master s of Science in Clinical Psychology Program at San Jose State University. This MS program is designed to provide the graduate student with both theoretical and practical training in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide variety of individual, couples, and family mental health problems. The SJSU MS Clinical Program allows graduates from the program to meet the educational requirements for California State licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) or Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC). If you are interested in the M.A. degree in Experimental Psychology, you must fill out a different application. I strongly encourage you to read over the Program Information Packet for prospective students interested in the MS in Clinical Psychology available on-line. This Program Information packet contains considerable information about the program, requirements, courses, and the full-time track of study that we offer. Please note that we not accepting applicants into a part time track. A minimum GPA of 3.0 in all Psychology courses AND a 3.0 for the last two years (60 semester units or 90 quarter units) of undergraduate coursework is required for admission. You must provide your GPA for the last 60 units AND in all of your psychology courses. Use the forms from the website to calculate these and be sure to include both sets of calculations with your application. It is not sufficient to email them to the department. Your application is not complete without these forms. You need a bachelors degree in psychology OR a bachelors in another area AND 30 semester units (45 quarter units) in psychology coursework. You must have completed the required prerequisite coursework prior to beginning your graduate study here at SJSU. If you have not completed this coursework before you apply, you must be able to show how you can reasonably have it completed by your starting date. If you have 1-2 courses to take, that may be acceptable, provided you will have them completed by the time you start the program in the Fall (i.e., you will taken them in the Spring semester or Summer session). You need to complete a statement of intent for the program. Directions for this statement are found on the following pages. Be sure to write clearly and concisely. You are also required to have completed a minimum total of 100 hours in a volunteer or paid position related to clinical psychology where you are interacting with individuals with mental health problems, psychological distress, or psychopathology. The number of hours worked per week is not as important as having some continuity to your experience. We take this minimal requirement seriously, and thus encourage those who meet or exceed this standard to apply. One hundred hours must be completed prior to applying to the program at SJSU. There is no length of time you must have spent in your role for this (e.g., one year), but you should have sufficient time at an agency to be able to secure a useful evaluation from a supervisor. You MUST get a letter of recommendation written by a supervisor at your clinical experience placement. The letter will describe how long you have worked at the agency and for how many hours. The supervisor MUST use the Supervisor Recommendation Form included in the Application Packet for this letter. If you have more than one letter from a supervisor, please have each supervisor fill out this form. For other letter of recommendation writers, please use the standard form available for download. The GRE is no linger required for application to the MS Clinical program. There are two applications required for admission to the MS in Clinical Psychology Program. You must complete both to be admitted to the program. First is the MS Clinical Program Application. This is printed and submitted by the applicant to the department of Psychology. The Departmental Application is NOT submitted on-line. Instead, you will download the files, complete them, and then print the materials to submit as one complete application. Students are responsible for compiling their own application files including letters of recommendation and transcripts from all Universities and Colleges attended (transcripts may be unofficial student copies) before submitting the complete application to the Psychology Department. Materials sent independently may cause a delay in processing your application, so we recommend that you send your letters of recommendation and transcripts with your packet. Be sure that the letters are sealed and signed across the seal by the writers. Be certain to complete all of the parts of the application and use the enclosed checklist. This is all detailed below. Second, you are required to fill out the on-line University Graduate Study application for admission to graduate status in at San Jose State University. Application forms for domestic students are to be completed on line. International students need to contact the Graduate Studies Office. Go to http://www.csumentor.edu/admissionapp/grad_apply.asp to complete the application process with graduate studies. The University also requires that a complete set of official transcripts be sent directly to the Graduate Studies Office. Note that San Jose Sate University graduates still have to request and send an official transcript to the Graduate Office. There is a fee for the Graduate Studies Application. STUDENTS MUST SUBMIT A UNIVERSITY APPLICATION AT THE SAME TIME THEY SUBMIT THEIR COMPLETED APPLICATION TO THE PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT. To be reviewed, all Department application materials MUST be in the Psychology Department office by February 1. If you have questions about the status of your application, please contact the director of the program using the information provided below. Email is the preferred form of communication. Thank you for considering our program and good luck! Sincerely, Glenn M. Callaghan, Ph.D. Professor of Psychology Director of Clinical Training One Washington Square Department of Psychology San Jose State University San Jose CA 95192-0120 email: Glenn.Callaghan@sjsu.edu SJSU MS Clinical Psychology Program Application Materials 3

REQUIRED MATERIAL All MUST be included with application DEPARTMENTAL APPLICATION Complete the Departmental Application form that follows these instructions. Be sure to complete all sections and sign the bottom. CALCULATE YOUR GPA A minimum GPA of 3.0 in all Psychology courses AND a 3.0 for the last two years (60 semester units or 90 quarter units) of undergraduate coursework is required for admission. You must provide your GPA for the last 60 units AND in all of your psychology courses. Use the forms from the website to calculate these and be sure to include both sets of calculations with your application. Currently, there is only one link to do this (called Calculate your Psychology and last two years GPA ). You will need to do each GPA calculation with this same link. One of them will be labeled Psychology GPA. You need to simply rename the second set of calculations Last Two Years GPA. You MUST print both of these calculations and include them with your application. It is not sufficient to email them to the department. Your application is not complete without these forms. Please summarize your total last 2 years GPA and psychology GPA in the appropriate area on the application form. STATEMENT OF INTENT To help us evaluate your application, please prepare an essay describing your background, your plans for your future, and how you see admission to our graduate program in the context of your life s goals. Please include your essay with the pages in your application. Your statement should be 2-3 double-spaced typed pages. Be sure to include answers to the following questions within the context of your essay: 1. What experiences have led you to choose clinical or counseling psychology as a profession, and why have you decided to apply to the MS Clinical Program at SJSU in particular? Be sure to discuss your clinical experiences specifically. Discuss what you learned and what skills you developed in your applied clinical experience. If you have research experience, discuss how that relates to your choices for this program. 2. What personal qualities do you possess (e.g., interpersonal qualities or skills) that might help you to become a successful psychotherapist? What personal qualities might interfere with your ability to succeed (e.g., time management, receiving feedback) for you in this regard? 3. What are your academic and professional goals? How does our graduate program fit in terms of you meeting these goals? You need to be very specific about why you have chosen to apply to the SJSU MS Clinical Program. Specifically, what does evidence based practice mean to you and how does that fit your training goals as a therapist? You must answer this question in your application. 4. Overall, how are you prepared for this program, given its academic demands?

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION For your application to be complete, you must have three letters of recommendations. These letters should be from people who know your capabilities, and one MUST be from one of your supervisors in your applied clinical experience. The others can be from additional supervisors, professors in relevant courses, or other professionals who are familiar with your work and professional skills. Use the forms from the website and include them with your letters. TRANSCRIPTS Transcripts from all Universities and Colleges attended must be included in your MS Clinical Program application. For this MS Clinical application, transcripts may be unofficial student copies. For your application to Graduate Studies (the University application), a complete set of OFFICIAL transcripts must be sent directly to the Graduate Studies Office. Note that San Jose Sate University students MUST request and send copies to both the Department of Psychology and to the Graduate Office. GRE SCORES We no longer require the GRE be taken for admission to the Department and to the University. SENDING YOUR COMPLETED APPLICATION There are two separate applications that you must file. One is for the MS Clinical Program. This application is part of this set of instructions and includes a corresponding document that you download and complete. The University application is different from the MS Clinical Application. Information about the University Application is included below. Both applications must be completed. MS CLINICAL PROGRAM APPLICATION Applicants are responsible for compiling their own application files, including letters of recommendation and transcripts from all Universities and Colleges attended before submitting the application to the Psychology Department. If a recommendation source wishes to mail your letter from their office or address, you can either have him or her mail it to you and include it UNOPENED in your application, or you can have him or her mail it to the address provided below. Use the Checklist/Review Form on the following pages to be sure your application is complete. Materials sent independently may cause a delay in processing your application. Note that there is no additional application fee for this MS Clinical Program Application beyond the University fee required. APPLICATIONS INCOMPLETE AFTER UAR WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED. Mail Application to MS Clinical Program Application, Department of Psychology San Jose State University, San Jose. CA 95192-0120
