GAP insurance covers the scenario that GAP Insurance (or Guaranteed Asset Protection Insurance) Your vehicle is labelled a total write off or stolen and unrecoverable by your motor insurer; and Your motor insurer s settlement is less than the amount covered under your GAP insurance (typically the outstanding finance or the cost of another new car depending on policy) If this happens your GAP Insurer will make a payout to you. There are several different GAP policy types, the payout received depends on which type you have. Typically you will receive a payout that in addition to your motor insurer s settlement equals: - What you still owe on your car finance (finance GAP) - What you originally paid for the car (RTI or return to invoice) - What the car was worth when you took out the GAP policy (RTV or return to value) - What it would cost you to buy the car now (new car or vehicle replacement GAP) Or a combination of the above You must have fully comprehensive motor insurance in addition to any GAP Insurance. Example GAP Claim You buy a brand new car for 12,000. You take out a fully comprehensive insurance policy with 250 excess After three years you have an accident and the car is a write off The insurer values the car at 4,500, which you are paid less the excess i.e. 4,250 This may well not be enough to pay your outstanding finance which you would still be required to pay and certainly would not be enough to buy another new car What to consider when deciding if you need GAP insurance The chance of total write off or theft is small, but the implications of having outstanding finance to pay or no car maybe big. Whether you need GAP depends on weighing up these two aspects. See the pros and cons for each GAP type below.

Finance GAP insurance Covers: New and used cars, with outstanding finance greater than the market value of the car In the event of claim you receive enough money to pay off your finance, but nothing towards another car. When would Finance GAP be useful? This is only useful where the amount of finance outstanding is greater than the market value of the car. Typically this is likely to be particularly true where: You have a paid a small deposit You have a long term finance deal You bought a brand new car or a car that loses value quickly Your finance has a large amount to be paid at the end of the term You have a high APR rate finance You have a long term contract hire agreement Return-to-invoice (RTI) insurance Covers: New and used cars, with and without finance In the event of claim you receive an amount that in addition to your motor insurer s settlement equals the purchase cost of your car. This would need to be used to pay off your outstanding finance balance if you bought the car with finance. The rest of the money could be used to buy another car. When would Return to Invoice Insurance be useful? Useful if you are concerned you could not afford to replace your car with another new car If you have high finance costs you may want to consider combined RTI and Finance GAP which will pay the higher of your outstanding finance or the original purchase price

Return-to-value (RTV) insurance Covers: New and used cars, with and without finance Very similar to RTI, but instead of being paid the original purchase price for your car you receive the value of the car when you took out the GAP policy When would Return to Value Insurance be useful? Useful for used cars where you have owned the car for a while, or you do not have the original sales invoice, for example if you bought the car privately If you have bought the car with finance you may wish to consider whether Finance GAP would be more suitable Useful if you are concerned you could not afford to replace your car in the event of a total write off New Car Replacement Covers: New cars only, with and without finance Very similar to RTI, but allows for increasing cost of cars. Instead of receiving the original purchase price of the car, you receive the amount it would cost you to buy the same car at the current new car prices. When would New Car Replacement Insurance be useful? Useful if you are concerned you could not afford to replace your car with another brand new car If you have high finance costs you may wish to consider policies that also cover you for your outstanding finance if this exceeds the cost of a new replacement car.

Personal Contract Hire or Personal Lease Vehicles If you are leasing your car (instead of buying with cash or finance) GAP insurance is still available. If you have the option to own your vehicle at the end of the lease period then you may be able to buy RTI or vehicle replacement GAP. Some insurers cover leased cars under the same policy types as above. Other insurers have specific policies for leased vehicles. Make sure you read the insurer s policy wording carefully and if in doubt contact the insurer. Lease GAP is very similar to Finance GAP and pays the difference between your Motor Insurer s settlement amount and the amount your finance company charges you.

Policy specifics to consider When looking at different GAP policies you may wish to consider how the following items compare: Excess Cover the amount the GAP insurer pays towards your motor insurer s excess typically max 250 Maximum level of cover eg the difference between the motor insurer s payout and the amount you want covered by GAP insurance. Typical maximum 25,000. Maximum value of your vehicle there is usually a maximum value of vehicle covered for GAP insurance. The length of time you want to be covered typically 1-5 years. With finance gap this is only required for the length of time where your finance exceeds the value of your car Inclusion of dealership fitted extras in the original car price for Return to Invoice and new car replacement The age of the vehicle that you want to cover each insurer will specify a maximum age - typically a car older than 10 years cannot be covered. Time taken to settle claims after motor insurer s settlement you may remain responsible for paying any outstanding finance until you have the GAP insurance settlement to repay your finance. Transferability if you change vehicles whether there is a cost to transfer the policy to your new vehicle Theft with keys this may be an exclusion on some policies Cooling off period this can vary from 14 to 30 days. Check your policy. You can cancel your policy within this time and receive a refund of the premium paid. Cancellation Refunds some GAP policies will give a pro rata refund if you end the policy after the cooling off period eg if you sell your car in many cases you will be able to transfer your policy to the new car for free (see transferability above) Things to note and check GAP won t cover amounts deducted by your motor insurer. Eg deductions for unpaid premiums, salvage value or contributory negligence. any non-standard extras added after you bought the car, eg speakers, satnav. Check the GAP policy regarding dealer fitted accessories Warranty charges, insurance premiums (including GAP insurance), road fund licence and any other warranty or add-on in most cases. GAP only covers the difference between the market value and the insured amount. If your motor insurer offers you less than the market value of the car, and you accept, the GAP insurer won t make up the difference. (You must contact your GAP insurer as soon as possible before you agree any settlement with your motor insurer. However the GAP insurance payout will not usually be made until your motor insurer has settled in full.)

GAP insurance may not be required where You bought your car new and your car is less than 12 months old and your motor insurer offers new car replacement during the first 12 months of ownership. However to qualify for RTI or New Car Replacement policies you usually need to take out the policy within a few months of the original purchase. The insurer may let you defer your start date until after the 12 months end or take into account your motor insurer s cover when calculating the premium Your finance agreement covers you for the difference between the book price (market value of the car) and how much you paid. You could afford to make up for any difference between the outstanding finance and the insurers payout or you could afford to buy another car (more typical if you have a low loan amount and high deposit) Why does the motor insurer not pay the full amount? Your motor insurer will value your car at its current market value (typically using a standard source of this data like Glass s guide). The current market value of your car is getting less all the time (otherwise known as depreciation) as a result the finance on the car may exceed the market value of the car. This is particularly true for brand new cars. Depreciation tends to reduce the older the car is. If you have finance where a large balance is payable at the end of the loan eg balloon payments or PCP deals it is likely the finance outstanding will far exceed the amount your motor insurer will pay you.
