2 HOW MUCH CAN YOU AFFORD TO SPEND? RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH BEFORE YOU SHOP. A good rule of thumb is to consider a monthly auto payment that should be no more than 20% of your gross monthly income. Fitting the potential new payment into your budget is an important step. It s also a good time to check your credit report before you begin to shop ( so there are no surprises. Make a list of likes and dislikes to narrow your search. Try not to let your purchase be an emotional decision. Research before you purchase. Some 80% of consumers start their shopping experience online. There is an incredible amount of information available, options packages, safety considerations even long-term cost of ownership to consider. It s easier to consider different vehicles before you go on a dealer s lot, take your time and research thoroughly before you shop. 2

Determine whether to trade your vehicle or sell your vehicle yourself Research the value of your vehicle. Trade-in value vs. private-party sale value. Know your options: sell to an individual, trade to a dealer, or vehicle consignment. Weigh your options and make the informed choice that is right for you. Definitions to become familiar with: Trade-in Value the price you can expect to be offered for your used vehicle if you sell it to a dealer as a part of purchasing a new car. This value will usually be lower than what you would expect to receive for a private-party deal. Private-Party Value the price that a vehicle typically sells for when sold between two individuals. Wholesale Value The price a dealer would pay to purchase the vehicle from a dealer auction. The vehicle s age and overall condition are often factored into this price. 4
4 TEST DRIVE BEFORE YOU BUY. WHAT DOES THE NEW VEHICLE COST? 6 This seems easy enough, but don t skip this all-important step. Test drive several vehicles including the actual one you may purchase. Even with a new car purchase, test drive the actual vehicle before committing to the purchase. Schedule time with the sales person to test drive, and go prepared with questions you have. Take your time with this step. When purchasing used vehicles from private owners, we highly recommend that you have your own mechanic inspect the vehicle. Certified used vehicles, available at most dealerships, usually are a little more expensive, but can include a warranty and special financing terms. Terminology that can help you: MSRP-Manufacturer s Suggested Retail Price. Invoice Price-Recorded amount paid by dealer, excluding any costs for advertising, destination charges or special regional pricing. Dealer Cost-Invoice price after dealer incentives. Listen closely to what is offered to ensure it is appropriate for your needs and adds value to your purchase.

Factor the insurance payment in when deciding if you can afford the car. Premiums vary based on make and model and driver specifics. Read everything TWICE before you sign. Do your homework.
