ISBN 978-0-07-337682-0 COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course provides an understanding of information systems utilized to manage an enterprise. Topics include the importance of computer and information literacy, an overview of system development methodologies, types of information systems, telecommunications, social and ethical issues, relational databases, and other personal productivity tools. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon successfully completing this course, the student will be able to: 1. Understand the importance of computer literacy 2. Appreciate the importance of information in problem solving and decision-making. 3. Know sources of information and how to gather information. 4. Appreciate the need for validating information. 5. Understand the roles of information systems professionals and those of users in the systems development effort. 6. Understand the purpose of the various categories of computer based information systems: a. Transaction Processing Systems b. Management Information Systems c. Decision Support Systems d. SPECIAL FEATURES OF THE COURSE: Reading Assignments Every chapter will have a reading and writing assignment. You will be required to turn in a written assignment for each chapter. The purpose of the writing assignment is to demonstrate that you have read the chapter and not that you can copy complete sentences from the textbook. These assignments should be completed using Microsoft Word. The written assignments will be due on the date and time specified. If you cannot turn them in on time, communicate with your instructor about the reason. If you are late without reason or offer no communication about why you are late, the assignment will be penalized 20% per day it is late. Here is a sample grading scale for Reading Assignments worth 40 points: 34-40 pts Wow, they really understand this topic. (This includes good grammar, spelling and idea clarity) Answered all questions in your own words and provided examples. 30-33 pts Answered the questions well most of the questions were answered in your own words, a few grammar errors and few examples. 26-29 pts Answered the questions but not in your own words; grammar errors, few or no examples. 20-25 pts Did not fully answer the questions asked. When did answer the questions, did not answer in your own words. Less than 20 pts Are you hoping for a few extra points? Discussion Board Assignments The course will require you to respond to an article or scenario, to find an article and describe it, or to respond to someone else s posting. The Assignments will be posted under the Assignments tab. The work will all be done on Blackboard under the Discussion Board. Me too responses will not be given full credit. Only in the event of emergencies will late responses be allowed. Here is a sample grading scale for a Discussion Board assignment worth 25 points: 24-25 pts Wow, they really understand and could lead this topic s discussion 20-23 pts Definitely contributed and provided some insights to the question 16-19 pts Answers are somewhat repetitive 10-15 pts Did you read the question and current list of responses? Less than 10 pts Are you hoping for a few extra points? Computer Lab Assignments This course will have a number of computer-based lab assignments. Software projects will be due on the date and time specified. If you cannot turn them in on time, communicate with your instructor. If you are late without reason, the assignment will be penalized 20% per day it is late. All assignments are to be prepared so that they reflect the highest degree of professionalism. Neatness, clarity, and adherence to instructions given are vital.

(IS213ZA) (Management Information Systems Concepts) Page 3 Quizzes Approximately every other week a quiz will be posted that covers two (2) chapters. You will take the quiz sometime that week before Thursday at midnight. You may use your book and notes, but be aware that the quiz will be timed. Only in the event of emergencies will quizzes be allowed to be taken after the due date. Creating Files and Submitting Them via Blackboard All assignments will be submitted through blackboard prior to the stated deadline. All files should be named according the following convention. Name your file as LastNameFirstNameAssignment#.doc LubyJeremyAssignment1.doc example All assignments must be submitted using the ASSIGNMENTS section in blackboard. All assignments (where practical) should contain your name inside the file. Blackboard Tabs and Due Dates On average, you will read one chapter per week and complete a computer assignment or discussion board assignment approximately every other week (when there is not a quiz or a holiday). Course Content tab - PowerPoint presentations and other materials that can be used to help you as you read through the chapter are posted under this tab. Assignments tab Most assignments and computer lab assignments will be posted under this tab. Quizzes and the final exam will also be posted under this tab. Discussions Used to facilitate discussions and for you to fulfill requirements of assignments to post comments about articles or scenarios or other readings. QUESTIONS?: If you have any questions about anything, be sure to e-mail your instructor for clarification. The chances are that if you have a question, then you aren t the only one! It is hard for me to see your faces and determine that you have questions, so please e-mail and ask. COURSE EVALUATION PROCESS: Basis of Assignment of Grades: The evaluation will be based upon total points obtained from all assignments. 600 points (56% of the grade) will be from chapter assignments. Discussion board and computer assignments that relate to the material in the chapters are worth 205 points (19% of the grade). Quizzes and the final exam are worth 275 points (25% of the grade). The grading scale will consist of total points earned: 90% - 100% of total points= A 80% - 89% of total points= B 70% - 79% of total points= C 60% - 69% of total points= D 00%- 59% of total points= F WITHDRAWAL POLICY: The option of the instructor to initiate student withdrawal for excessive student absences does not apply to this course. Students who decide to withdraw and receive an automatic "W" must complete the formal withdrawal procedure by October 24, 2012. After that date, a student may not withdraw from the class nor may the instructor assign a "W".

Academic dishonesty includes but is not limited to activities such as cheating and plagiarism (presenting as one's own the intellectual or creative accomplishments of another without giving credit to the source or sources.) The faculty member in whose course or under whose tutelage an act of academic dishonesty occurs has the option of failing the student for the academic hours in question and may refer the case to other academic personnel for further action. Emporia State University may impose penalties for academic dishonesty up to and including expulsion from the university. Cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated. You are encouraged to share your knowledge and experience with your fellow students; however, the final product of exams and assessments are meant to be individual efforts and those that are not may be punished by failure (score of zero) on that assignment and referral to the appropriate University offices.
