Kofi Annan Business Schools Foundation Annual Report 2009-2010

Foreword With great pleasure I accepted the invitation to chair the Kofi Annan Business Schools Foundation at the beginning of 2009. Since then, the Kofi Annan Business School has further increased its efforts to strengthen existing capacity in countries that need it most. Offering opportunities to the most talented young people from those countries to develop their full potential, the Foundation helps them to acquire the knowledge, attitudes and networks needed to contribute meaningfully to the development of smaller and bigger businesses in their home countries. This social annual report highlights several important activities of the Kofi Annan Business Schools Foundation and its partners in the past academic year (September 2009-September 2010). We are very proud to welcome a new partner into our midst, the European School of Management and Technology. This further increases the outreach of the initiative by providing even more opportunities for talented students from developing areas. In the coming year, we will continue to look for new partner universities and business schools, in the Northern as well as in the Southern hemispheres. Another important initiative was organized in Spring, when representatives of five partner universities of the Kofi Annan Business School, from Africa, Asia and Latin America, attended a conference at HU. Two days of exchanging experiences marked the first steps towards the creation of a platform of knowledge. Above all, however, it is the Kofi Annan Fellows themselves who are most crucial to the success of the Kofi Annan Business Schools Foundation, and we are happy to congratulate yet another successful batch of graduates, and to welcome an even larger number of new Kofi Annan Fellows. These results allow us to be optimistic about the years to come. Prof. dr. Hans van Ginkel Chairman of the Board Kofi Annan Business Schools Foundation Testimonials of Kofi Annan graduates The Kofi Annan Business School program at HU meant a great opportunity for me, to do my studies in The Netherlands and get a diploma here. This diploma is opening new doors and opportunities, and I feel that I have an added- value as a professional starting my career in business. My future plans are to set up a business with entrepreneurs in Cuzco (Peru). I m now looking for contacts and parties to cooperate with. Melissa Sanchez from Peru Kofi Annan Fellow at HU (2007-2010)

New partner: European School of Management and Technology (ESMT), Berlin ESMT is proud to become a partner of the Kofi Annan Business Schools Foundation. The Fellowships we will award will make a significant contribution to those countries that need effective support the most. This initiative fits perfectly with ESMTs values. The KABS Fellows will participate in our one year Full-Time MBA Program, and will connect with other students from diverse backgrounds. The group as a whole will benefit from exposure to each others perspectives and values when solving managerial challenges, thus strengthening the awareness for responsibility in leadership. Upon return to their home countries, the Fellows will contribute to the strengthening of entrepreneurial capacity and the fostering of a stable market economy as a catalyst for their country s development, job creation and poverty alleviation. Prof. dr. Wulff Plinke Dean at ESMT Prof. dr. Wulff Plinke (left), and Prof. dr. Hans van Ginkel Reception at the Institute of Social Studies (ISS) (The Hague, June 3, 2010) At the beginning of June 2010, the Institute of Social Studies (ISS) in The Hague hosted a reception to officially celebrate the establishment of the Kofi Annan Business Schools Foundation in The Hague, a city known for hosting many internationally renowned organizations. The reception was attended by the Honorary Patron of the Kofi Annan Business Schools Foundation, Dr. Ben Bot, the chairman of the Netherlands Association of Universities of Applied Sciences, Doekle Terpstra, the vice-mayor of the city of The Hague, Marnix Norder, the Deputy Rector of ISS, Wil Hout, and many others who have supported the initiative of the Kofi Annan Business Schools Foundation over the past years. Looking back at my experience as a fellow at the HU, I have grown both intellectually and as an individual. The wealth of knowledge presented to us by the experienced and passionate lecturers served the purpose of broadening my theoretical knowledge. The lecturers allowed me to get a glimpse of reality as they brought their practical experience to class through case studies and papers. The international environment allowed me to learn a lot about other cultures and broadened my way of thinking. Thanks to this program, both within the school and through the internships, I have widened both my professional and social networks and acquired a broadened sense of what I can achieve with my abilities. Winnie Sagwe from Kenya Kofi Annan Fellow at HU (2007-2010)

International Conference Kofi Annan Business School Network (Utrecht, May 27-28, 2010) At the end of May 2010, delegations of five partner universities within the net work of the Kofi Annan Business Schools Foundation attended an international conference at the Faculty of Economics and Management at HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht to officially sign Double Degree agreements. This agreement allows Kofi Annan Fellows to study at their home universities in Africa, Asia or Latin America for three years and take their graduation year at the HU in The Netherlands. Under this agreement, these fellows will obtain both the degree from their home institute and the HU after successful completion of their graduation year. The program of the conference specifically aimed to stimulate multilateral cooperation between the six partner universities in the areas of education and research. On the first day, representatives of all universities briefly presented their academic programs in the presence of students and lecturers, followed by a lunch with courtesy of the vice-mayor at Utrecht s City Hall. The afternoon program had a more social character and included a boat tour through the Utrecht Canals, during which fruitful ideas for further cooperation were discussed. On day two, several distinguished guests from different organizations and companies which cooperate with KABS projects presented their views on entrepreneurship, corporate social responsibility and sustainable develop ment. In the afternoon the Double Degree agreements were officially signed by the president of the board of the HU and the deans of all the business school involved. During the closing session of this successful conference, the discussion focused on how to further strengthen the platform of knowledge of KABS. (left to right) Mary Kipsat, PhD, dean of the School of Business and Economics at Moi University (Kenya), Francisco Valladares, MSc, dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Nicaragua (Nicaragua), Swabiri Khalidi, MBA, coordinator international cooperation at University of Dar Es Salaam Business School (Tanzania), Shadreck Chama, PhD, dean of the School of Business at Copperbelt University (Zambia), and Prof. dr. Farida Jasfar, dean of the Faculty of Economics at Universitas Trisakti (Indonesia). Looking back on the three years at HU, I can proudly say that I ve learned a lot. Not only how to become a young entrepreneur, but also a member of society who has empathy for its condition and has been trained to do something about it. I would never be able to study at HU without the scholarship, and I owe a lot to the KABS initiative. This program gave me the necessary knowledge on business, while the internship allowed me to apply this knowledge and learn something from real practice. My plan for the future is to set up a successful agricultural enterprise. Herin Devianti from Indonesia Kofi Annan Fellow at HU (2007-2010)

Graduation Ceremonies Kofi Annan fellows During an intimate ceremony, the first generation of fellows of the Kofi Annan Business School at the HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht obtained their bachelor degrees in business administration in August 2010. In the presence of friends and some family, the Kofi Annan Fellows were proudly dressed in academic gowns that were especially made for this occasion. After personal speeches by their supervising lecturers, the graduates officially received their diplomas. Melissa Sanchez, Mumba Tamele, Herin Devianti, and Winnie Sagwe are the first Kofi Annan Fellows to successfully complete the three-year program that was specifi cally designed to allow talented and motivated students from developing areas to study, and obtain their bachelor diploma in business administration at the HU. Last year s graduates at Vlerick, Arief Lubis (MFM) (above), and Dimas Noverio (MBA), together with Philippe Haspeslagh. Expectations of these alumni are high, as they are ambassadors who will contribute to the strengthening of entrepreneurial capacity and business administration in developing areas, and thus serve as an effective catalyst for economic development, job creation and poverty alleviation. The first Kofi Annan graduates at HU, together with HU graduate James Sablerolles (middle), Rio Praaning (left), Geri Bonhof, and Hans van Ginkel (right) This scholarship has been a great opportunity to learn and to benchmark As far as KABS is concerned, I think that this scholarship has been a great opportunity to learn and to benchmark with people from all over the world. It has been a great year and experience which will greatly affect my life and career. After his MBA, Dimas accepted a position as a bond trader for a prominent local investment house in Indonesia. Dimas Noverio from Indonesia Kofi Annan Fellow at Vlerick (2009-2010)

Partners for Development Since the start of the Kofi Annan Business Schools Foundation in 2007, considerable numbers of companies and organizations have contributed to the Foundation, both financially and in kind. For the academic year 2009-2010, the Kofi Annan Business Schools Foundation would like to thank the following partners for develop ment : Noaber Foundation, Deloitte, Calculations, Rabobank Foundation, Gemeente Utrecht, SSH, Bo-Ex, Gaia Foundation, K.F. Heinfonds, Gemeente Den Haag, VU Talencentrum, Koning Boudewijn Stichting, Ontwerpwerk. About the Kofi Annan Business Schools Foundation The Kofi Annan Business Schools Foundation is a joint initiative of Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School (Vlerick) in Belgium, the Hogeschool Utrecht (HU) University of Applied Sciences Utrecht in The Netherlands, and Public Advice International (PA International) in The Hague, The Netherlands. In 2010 the European School of Management and Technology (ESMT) in Berlin, Germany, has joined the initiative. The goal of the Kofi Annan Business Schools Foundation is to provide the opportunity for talented and motivated students from developing areas, who do not belong to a privileged class and lack sufficient financial means, to study at and obtain a diploma from one of the associated business schools in Europe. The education of these Kofi Annan Fellows is funded by the participating busi ness schools, PA International and donations of business partners and the public sector. The Foundation aims to foster international exchange of knowledge and capacity building. For the coming years, the objective of the Kofi Annan Business Schools Foundation is to further expand the number of Business Schools associated with the Foundation, both in Europe as well as in the South, and to find even more companies and national and international institutions which are willing to become business partner and sponsor to the Foundation on the ground of corporate social responsibility. Looking back at the three years I spent on the Kofi Annan Business School at HU, it marked a significant contribution not only to my professional life, but other social aspects as well. The diversity of nationalities on the program allowed me to learn that there are different respected approaches to situations in life. On a professional front, it developed my thinking ability and judgment. I learned to be more critical and analytical and also how to work well with other people. The content of the courses is highly relevant to the real world and practice as I have observed from my current field of work which relates a great deal to my studies as agricultural value chain actors are encouraged and trained to handle their dealerships as actual profit making businesses. Mumba Tamele from Zambia Kofi Annan Fellow at HU (2007-2010)
