Pyramid Approach to Education The Pyramid Approach to Education is a unique teaching method that establishes highly effective learning environments for children and adults with autism or related developmental disabilities and/or other learning impairments. Created by Dr. Andy Bondy, the Pyramid Approach utilizes a broad spectrum of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) principles, while encouraging creativity and innovation on the teacher s part. It provides an invaluable foundation for educators and parents who want to provide the best possible environments for successful learning in the home, school or community. The Pyramid Approach to Education will provide staff, parents and caregivers with all the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to establish successful special education instructional programs. The Science of Behavior What to Teach: Functional Objectives and Activities Powerful Reinforcement Systems Functional Communication & Social Skills Identification and Replacement of Contextually Inappropriate Behaviors Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS ) PECS is a language training package that is used to teach communication skills rapidly to those with limited functional speech. PECS promotes communication within a social context, without lengthy prerequisite training or expensive materials. Training in PECS begins by teaching spontaneous requesting, and goes on to teach additional communicative functions such as responding to questions and commenting. Based on a study conducted at the Delaware Autism Program, 76% of children using PECS acquired speech as either their primary means of communication or as augmented by a picture based system. PECS is also used successfully by many students who have developed speech, but who are not using it functionally. The Pyramid Approach to Education emphasizes how to teach, rather than simply what to teach. Generalization Designing Effective Lessons Error Correction Strategies Evidence Based Teaching Strategies Collecting and Analyzing Data The PECS protocol and teaching strategies have been scientifically validated within the field of Applied Behavior Analysis. 2 Follow Pyramid and Dr. Andy Bondy on Twitter at @PECS_USA and @AndyBondyPECS. According to pediatric guidelines regarding autism interventions published in PEDIATRICS: The Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, individuals with autism who have limited verbal language, or those who do not respond to multiple interventions aimed at improving communication, should be offered the opportunity to use PECS. Further, a Technical Expert Panel consisting of practitioners, researchers and parents concluded that PECS is one of only a handful of interventions that have shown efficacy in the treatment of autism (Maglione, Gans, Das, Timbie, Kasari and HRSA Autism Intervention Research, 2012). 3

Teaching Critical Communication Skills HELP! I Can t WAIT to Ask for a BREAK and More! Learn how to teach the 9 skills that lead to increased independence and decreased inappropriate behaviors for all learners regardless of communicative modality. Individuals with complex communication needs must master certain critical communication skills if they are to function independently in the home, community, school and/or vocational setting. This training discusses how to teach critical expressive communication skills (requesting reinforcers, requesting help, requesting a break, acceptance and rejection) and critical receptive communications skills (waiting, following directions, schedule following and transitions between activities). Critical expressive communication skills are skills individuals need to convey important messages to others. These skills are crucial because if a person cannot calmly and effectively communicate wants and needs, contextually inappropriate behaviors may be demonstrated. Critical receptive communication skills relate to a person s ability to understand important messages from others. Failure to understand such messages may be distressing and/or dangerous for the individual. This one day training focuses on why these nine skills are the highest priority for teaching and how we teach them. Strategies covered are relevant for anyone with complex communication needs, regardless of their communication modality (PECS, speech, sign, SGD). Teaching Critical Communication Skills is a must for anyone working and/or living with people with complex communication needs. Registration time: 7:30 AM - 8:00 AM Agenda: 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM Professional or Parent $175 Register for a PECS Level 1 Training and Teaching Critical Communication Skills or multiple one day trainings and save on registration fees! See page 14 for details. See pages 6 & 7 for a full listing of PECS Level 1 Trainings. Tuition includes detailed handouts, a Certificate of Attendance and continental breakfast. What You Will Learn: How to define functional communication How to identify and evaluate the nine critical communication skills How to design effective teaching strategies to promote these skills independent of modality How to incorporate effective visual strategies for all communicators How to incorporate these skills into functional activities and routines Teaching Critical Communication Skills dates and locations Sacramento - October 17, 2014 NEW YORK New York - October 8, 2015 The Language of Emotions presented by Andy Bondy, PhD, world-renowned autism expert, developer of the Pyramid Approach to Education and co-developer of PECS Learn why traditional approaches to teaching the language of emotions may not be effective and how they can be improved. Many people with autism have difficulty acquiring language related to expressing their emotions and also identifying emotions in other people. In this workshop we will evaluate and challenge traditional approaches to teaching learners with autism to communicate about their emotions, as well as respond to such language from other people. This training begins with providing a theoretical approach to the Language of Emotions and ends with a variety of practical suggestions for teaching. B.F. Skinner provided an important guide to the analysis of language in his book, Verbal Behavior. In this book, he stresses the critical value of focusing on the function of various aspects of communication. His analysis includes a very interesting section on what he termed private events. That is, how do we learn to talk about things that happen inside of us? In this workshop, we will review traditional approaches to teaching children with autism to communicate about their emotions as well as respond to such language from other people. Participants will be asked to consider how they currently teach various lessons related to emotions and then plan to incorporate Skinner s analysis into the design of effective lessons. These lessons may involve very young children or teenagers and adults who continue to have difficulty with this topic. We also will look at a very important part of language that helps communicative partners better understand the perspective of someone who is attempting to communicate. We will review why this area is so difficult for those with autism and suggest teaching strategies that may lead to successful acquisition of these complex language skills. Registration time: 7:30 AM - 8:00 AM Agenda: 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM Professional or Parent $175 Register for a PECS Level 1 Training and The Language of Emotions or multiple one day trainings and save on registration fees! See page 14 for details! See pages 6 & 7 for a full listing of PECS Level 1 Trainings. Tuition includes detailed handouts, a Certificate of Attendance and continental breakfast. What You Will Learn: To describe how children typically learn to comment about private events The type of information adults respond to when teaching children to tell us about their emotions, and what may be missing for children with autism How to both take advantage of existing emotional displays and how to create situations that area likely to induce such feelings Why it is not easy to teach really ILLINOIS Chicago - October 26, 2015 NORTH CAROLINA Charlotte - August 10, 2015 The Language of Emotions dates and locations Loved this training! I will create my IEPs around this! Loved specific examples from the presenter that I can use in real life! Loved that the training was not PECS specific, but for all modalities! Loved getting help with teaching help and break. workshop attendee, St. Louis, MO This training is an important supplement to the PECS Level 1 workshop! It also stands alone as a tremendously beneficial training experience! Los Angeles - March 12, 2015 PENNSYLVANIA Philadelphia - March 9, 2015 presented by Andy Bondy, PhD Many of the available workshops pertaining to Autism cover such similar ground as each other. This workshop took a very different approach and in turn was much more helpful to me. It is extremely useful to hear a new perspective. workshop attendee, Boston, MA 10 Register Online: www.pecs.com 888-732-7462 (Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm Eastern Time) Register Online: www.pecs.com 888-732-7462 (Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm Eastern Time) 11

Transitioning From PECS to Speech Generating Devices (SGDs)* Is your learner ready to transition to a Speech Generating Device? Do you need help selecting a device and/or preparing your learner for the transition? This training will help get your questions answered! With the current influx of communication devices and apps to the market, how do we ensure that basic functional communication skills are maintained and taught right from the beginning? Speech Generating Devices (SGDs) were first introduced for people with motor difficulties. The use of these devices have now expanded and are being introduced to learners with autism and other related communication difficulties. For these populations, language and cognition are often compromised and basic social and communication skills have not always been mastered prior to the introduction of a device. Because of this, the way we teach the use of SGDs needs to be specifically tailored to fit the needs of each individual paying attention to devices capabilities vs. user capabilities. This full-day workshop will describe procedures for analyzing a learner s current PECS skills to determine candidacy for transitioning to a Speech Generating Device (SGD), choosing a device, and teaching functional use of the device, and why we must teach the basic principles of communication to our learner first to ensure positive outcomes are achieved. *Please bring a Speech Generating Device (SGD) to the training for use during a variety of activities to receive the full experience.
