SOLUTION PREMIUM LIVE VIDEO SERVICE DELIVERY Thomson Video Networks offers a modular, flexible and dense solution for Contribution and Primary Distribution (C&D), from MPEG-2 SD :2:0 -bit up to MPEG- HD :2:2 10-bit. Delivering Innovative C&D Solutions With a long track record of offering solutions for the transport of professional grade SD and HD services, Thomson Video Networks is the natural choice for carrier-class contribution and distribution, low latency and premium picture quality links. This includes studio-to-studio, stadium and venue to production unit, live newsgathering and event coverage, distribution from international broadcast centers and 2-hour, seven-days a week content backhaul from the playout center to digital headends, over telecom (managed, Internet) and satellite (C, Ku and Ka bands) networks. These solutions are designed for broadcasters, video carriers, telecom operators, ENG/SNG operators, content aggregators, and teleport operators. The contribution and distribution world is migrating to HD, with a move from MPEG- 2 to MPEG- to reduce transport costs, even if a large part of the installed-base remains MPEG-2 SD/HD. Thomson Video Networks addresses all these needs with the CP6000/CP6100 - a dense, modular and versatile MPEG codec, the RDx000 IRDs, and the Amethyst III redundancy switch. Efficient Management System The Thomson Video Networks XMS management system provides clear control and supervision for an entire system, including codec activation and release, fault monitoring, failover management, and confidence monitoring of delivered services. BROADCASTER :2:2 10 bits 3G Infrastructures LIVE EVENT CP6100 CODEC PRODUCTION STUDIOS CP6000 CODEC MPLS POST-PRODUCTION RECEIVER DECODER PLAYOUT CENTER CP6000 CODEC Figure 1: Permanent and On-Demand Contribution Links (Satellite + Telcos Links) Modular, flexible and dense codec solution, from MPEG-2 SD :2:0 up to MPEG- HD :2:2 10-bit KEY BENEFITS OPTIMUM USE OF AVAILABLE BANDWIDTH Easy adaptation to any transmission conditions thanks to SD, HD, MPEG-2, MPEG-, :2:0 or :2:2, or 10-bit codecs available through software licenses in CP6000/6100 encoders/decoders and /6000 IRDs Premium picture quality with optimum trade-off (bandwidth/picture quality) for all codecs and at all bitrates TRANSPORT OVER ANY Transport over telecom and satellite networks via encoder and decoder, ASI and DVB-S/S2/SNG interfaces Modulator ready for DVB-S2/S2X extensions ALL C&D REQUIREMENTS MET VIA HIGH-DENSITY, EFFICIENT AND FUTURE-PROOF ARCHITECTURES CP6000/CP6100: modular, high-density and flexible platform with up to channels per unit Mix of encoders and decoders in the same 1RU chassis Fast to deploy, upgrade and maintain thanks to its hot-swappable module configurable as either dual encoders or dual decoders Agile codecs upgradable via software licenses DELIVERY OF HIGHLY RELIABLE MANAGED SERVICES ON DEMAND OR 2/7 Video Compression: A Powerful Codec for Each Application MPEG- is more efficient than MPEG-2 as regards contribution bitrate up to 50 percent, but MPEG-2 is still widely present. :2:0 Chroma sampling is required for newsgathering and other applications with small transmission budgets, but :2:2 is a must once the link bitrate is sufficient, thus providing better results in a production workflow. MPEG- supports 10-bit profiles, leading to better sampling thus reducing contouring impairments and improving areas with smooth gradation. Decreasing latency while preserving quality has a direct bandwidth cost but this is a must have option. These codecs are all available in the Thomson Video Networks contribution solution by means of a set of software licenses running on the same hardware module. Contribution Over /MPLS Architecture: the codecs are plugged in to an or MPLS backbone, offering point-to-point or point-to-multipoint connectivity. Configuration can be carried out via web access to each individual codec or through access to a central Thomson Video Networks XMS management system. Perfect delivery over impaired networks: real life networks are sometimes flawed, and occasionally even major impairments such as packet corruption, inter-node link loss, node congestion, and jitter (DV) may occur. The Thomson Video Networks solution to carry professional-grade content over networks is based on the SMPTE 2022-1 FEC standard for packet loss correction and field-proven clock recovery algorithm to handle up to 200 ms jitter. CP6000/CP6100 Codec MPEG-2/, SD/HD, :2:0/:2:2, /10-bit CP6x00 is a multiformat, highperformance modular platform for the contribution and distribution of live video. The CP6000 full-rack chassis supports four hot-swappable slots to offer an unprecedented eight SD/HD channels per 1RU chassis mixing encoders and decoders. The CP6100 half-rack chassis supports two slots offering up to four channels. The CPx000 supports any broadcast standard and format, offering premium compression quality from MPEG-2 SD :2:0 up to MPEG- HD :2:2 10- bit. The CPx000 supports up to eight stereo audio channels per video channel and manages Dolby E and audio uncompressed pass through. The compressed interfaces are Gigabit Ethernet with SMPTE 2022-1/2 encapsulation with FEC and ASI. Each encoder can have two SDIs for input redundancy. Thanks to dual attachment, the encoder is capable of streaming over a main and backup path and the decoder can select the best path. The CPx000 is scalable and agile thanks to the easy plugging in of encoder/decoder modules, and the addition of software licenses. This product is easy to service with hotswappable, license-free spare modules. The CP6000 can be managed as a standalone box or via the XMS management system. The CP6000 is a future-proof platform with a hardware ready for 3G, 3D and AVC-I. XMS - Managing Video Services The XMS is a unified management system for all digital television applications including C&D. Its robust client/server architecture with backup server support is a global solution for centralized and geographically distributed systems. It supports advanced user-rights management for role-based access and usage. CP6100 Codec MPEG-2/, SD/HD, :2:0/:2:2, /10-bit The CP6000 and CP6100 can support a DVB-S/S2/ SNG modulator board. The CP6100 s small format makes it ideal for mobile contribution TELECOM TELECOM Figure 2: Backhaul Solution between Playout Centers and a Headend environments with tight space constraints (DSNG cars and flyaways). It supports two hot-swappable slots for processing boards and can encode an unprecedented four SD/HD channels or encode and modulate up to two SD/HD channels per half-rack chassis. A single CP6100 can provide a redundant transmission path at high bitrate to maintain video quality over the telecom path and at a lower bitrate for cost-saving delivery over the satellite path. In the primary distribution/backhaul workflow, encoders are located in the broadcaster playout center to compress SD and HD content and send it over satellite or telecom networks to the headend. :2:0 Chroma sampling and medium bitrate is sufficient in most cases but for premium content mezzanine format with :2:2 and highest bitrate could be used. Contribution IRD - MPEG-2/, SD/HD, :2:0/:2:2, /10-bit is the natural companion to the CP6x00 encoder for satellite contribution systems. It can also be deployed for telecom contribution applications, particularly when single channel decoding is required. It supports DVB-S/S2/SNG, ASI and interfaces and decodes video and up to eight stereo audio channels. In the headend, incoming compressed streams are decoded to feed the broadcasting encoder with SDI inputs, or just directed to the encoders, which support embedded decoder. The XMS network management system manages the complete headend, handling the distribution decoders/ IRD/demodulators, and offering configuration, monitoring and N+P device or module redundancy. Contribution & Distribution Solution SATELLITE TERRESTRIAL CABLE TV & OTT MOBILE TV CP6000 Codec MPEG-2/, SD/HD, :2:0/:2:2, /10-bit With up to eight channels in a single 1RU chassis, dual PSU and dual and SDI attachments, CP6000 is a perfect fit for primary distribution architectures as either an encoder in the playout center or a decoder in the headend. MANAGEMENT & QoS MONITORING Command and Control The XMS management system controls and monitors all products from Thomson Video Networks, as well as a number of third-party products. In client-server architecture, the XMS offers a suite of applications and graphical user interfaces for controlling hardware and operational parameters. With its NetOp client application, the XMS system provides a clear view of an entire system, including the fault-monitoring correlation of affected services, MPEG rate monitoring and audio plus video confidence monitoring. This view allows supervisory staff to make the best use of resources, and to accelerate fault finding and resolution. Resiliency for Mission-Critical Systems High level of resiliency can be required for high value contribution links and is a must in distribution applications. With redundancy at all stages of the systems, the XMS presents a unique design for a zero-fault system. The proposed architecture supports N+P redundancy for a pool of encoders, decoders, IRD and complementary devices. For simple 1+1 redundancy schemes the Amethyst III switch is a scalable and intelligent device performing monitoring, delay compensation and seamless switch of MPEG transport streams. QoS Monitoring The XMS performs live 2-hour, seven days a week QoS monitoring in any stage of the system, from the playout center to the headend backhaul based on Granite Sentinel, a transport stream probe, which monitors the quality of the digital television signal, from the physical interface up to the audio/video levels. The Granite Sentinel performs bitrate and session presence checking, media delivery index computations, TR 101 290 measurements, video/ bandwidth statistics and thumbnails streaming for confidence monitoring. It monitors QoS in an easy-to understand manner, allowing non-mpeg experts to make decisions and maximize service availability.
