Can you hack it? Opportunities for Graduates and Interns

Who we are MWR is a global research-led information security consultancy. We analyse and protect our clients information systems their corporate databases, their employees laptops and mobile phones, even their factory production lines. We develop a real understanding of our clients needs, providing bespoke consultancy, incident response, cyber defence and many other specialist services. Innovation is key to everything we do. In a rapidly changing digital world, it is essential. We are never satisfied with the first answer we hack stuff, break things, reverse and research them until we have an understanding that is of real value. We find the holes before the bad guys do. People love working here and our clients love working with us because we encourage a fun environment where people are open and sociable, whilst retaining the necessary respect and professionalism. Can you hack it?

What we are offering Internships We are offering paid summer internship positions. Based at our Basingstoke office, you ll spend the majority of your 10-12 week placement working on a personal research project that suits your interests - you will also have the chance to experience information security consultancy in practice for some of the UK s biggest companies. However, if you are not available over the summer or for the whole duration, do still apply as we can arrange internships for different durations or times. This is a great opportunity to get started in Information Security. It is no secret that we have hired extensively from our internship scheme in the past, and whether or not you decide to stay, an internship from one of the world s most respected security companies, along with a project you re genuinely proud of, isn t bad to have on your CV. Graduate positions If you have decided that a career in Information Security is right for you, then you can rest assured that there are few places better in the world to start your career than MWR. We are offering graduate positions as Junior Security Consultants. As a Junior Security Consultant you will be performing penetration tests, providing consultancy and doing research. You will start by shadowing experienced consultants on real world jobs giving you the chance to rapidly develop your skills in the necessary areas. However, your development does not stop there. Throughout your career you will constantly be learning new skills, and given opportunities to drive your career in the direction that appeals to you.

MWR is a leading company that constantly challenges my knowledge. Every day I need to learn something new in order to fulfil my duties, and I have the opportunity to work with some of the best security consultants in the industry. MWR gives me the opportunity of growing day by day as a consultant and as a person, at the same time that offers me a great career path which makes me feel proud of working for them. Guillermo (GMan), Intern 2011, Consultant 2013

You ll have fun At MWR, we believe that the work we do is a lot of fun. It s exciting, meaningful, challenging, and every week you ll be looking at something different. On top of the work, a lot of effort goes into making sure that you enjoy and have fun in your working environment. Various things go into making that possible, from having a relaxed office space to work in, to the various events the company hosts throughout the year. Hack-Fu started as a two-day training event held every year, but has grown into much more. Everyone in the company (including interns) and special guests descend on a secret location, like a nuclear bunker or an army base, for two days of doing things like controlling robots, solving murder mysteries and competing in Laser Tag. Not only is Hack-Fu a great opportunity to learn new skills and hone existing ones, but it is a great social occasion where everyone in the company comes together. We have a number of weekly activities such as Vuln Tuesdays/Wednesdays where we get together, eat pizza and look for vulnerabilities in various software products in a collaborative manner. There is also the opportunity to go to conferences all over the world, in addition to our own internal conference, MWRiCon, which is held every year. If that isn t fun enough, we have lots and lots of nerf guns!

I really enjoy working at MWR because it is a place where I feel I can really improve and grow as an individual. I have the opportunity to contribute to so many different areas of the company, which is something I really appreciate. Being surrounded by so many incredibly gifted people who work so well as a team makes me feel proud and makes working at MWR a lot of fun. Zak, Intern 2011, Consultant 2013

You ll learn with the best MWR is full of extremely gifted and passionate people. Not only that, but they love to share their knowledge. This creates an excellent environment where you can learn lots of new skills and develop as an individual. There is a great community feel with ideas constantly being bounced around. Part of what makes MWR a great environment to learn in is the fact that we are a research-driven company. We ring-fence a set amount of each employee s time for them to pursue their own research projects. This is a great chance to really run with something that you are passionate about and it can lead to fame and fortune! Examples of research projects include hacking chip and pin terminals which led to worldwide media attention and a conference tour. Another project analysed web browsers and led to winning a prize of $100,000! You will be placed on a flexible development programme that ensures you learn the core skills required, but still allows you to focus on the areas you are strongest in. You will not only learn technical skills, but also develop your talents and qualifications in presenting, leadership, management and business in general. We are confident that, during your time at MWR, you will learn a lot!

Working at MWR allowed me to meet some amazing people, who are not only gifted at what they do, but also continuously happy to help. I was given the freedom to research, the guidance to learn, and the opportunity to have fun. Most of all, I was able to be proud of where I was. Chantel, Intern 2013

You ll be valued Interns just fetch coffee and run errands, right? Graduates can t get their hands on real world projects, can they? They just do training exercises. At MWR, this couldn t be further from the truth. As an intern, you ll do a project that complements your interests, that forces you not only to learn but be creative and cunning to achieve it. It ll be a meaningful project too, one with real benefits to MWR and something that you ll be proud you did. Likewise, as a graduate, you will get to grips with real world projects from as early as your first week. We believe the best way to learn is by doing the job. From the start, you will shadow experienced consultants on real jobs, giving you the opportunity to develop first-hand the skills required. There is no distinction between juniors and other levels of staff - our juniors go to conferences, attend external training and get the same research and training time as more senior staff. You ll then be able to see that project used within MWR and possibly outside too.

I get to work on some massively interesting projects with a team of extremely talented and passionate people. The company is very progressive and one that I am very proud to work for. There are real opportunities to get involved and influence all areas of the business. John, Intern 2006, Managing Consultant 2013

You ll go places Whether you do an internship, or join as a graduate Junior Consultant, you will have many opportunities to broaden your horizons at MWR. We have an open environment and no limitations. If you want to learn in a different area than what you re doing, you ll find everyone is happy to help get you the experience you need. As interns, this will mean chances to shadow and get involved with real assessments in the areas that interest you, along with involvement in any relevant training that is happening. As a graduate consultant, you ll also be given time, resources and funding to train in the areas that excite you, and then be supported in gaining industry recognised qualifications in the area. At MWR, input from everyone in the company is welcomed. You have the opportunity to get involved in all areas of the business from an early stage in your career. This can include leading projects, recruitment, management, training and mentoring. At MWR, your potential is only limited by your desire to succeed! The proof is in the pudding: one of our Managing Consultants, a Principal Consultant and several of our Senior Consultants all started with us as interns and then joined as graduates.

What we look for I suppose passion is what we look for first of all, says Ian Shaw, MWR s Managing Director. We are at the forefront of information security, so we want people who have the dedication to ride that wave with us, and to help keep us there! What does that mean you should possess? You don t have to have done or be doing a Computer Science course, but you need to have understanding and interest in the area. We re not just techies. We also need to have good people skills, because what we do is based on our great relationships with our clients. There s no point finding an incredibly complex security issue, if you can t then explain it to the person who has to fix it. Whether you re investigating a technical vulnerability, or interviewing a client about their systems, you do need to be inquisitive and determined to get answers. You need to be someone who always looks deeper and likes to understand how the things they use are working. People at MWR are encouraged to be themselves everyone s input and impact is encouraged and valued. We are a great team which makes it important that you fit in. To do that, you ll need to be a team player, taking the lead when it s needed, and the back seat when that s required. Prima donnas need not apply. But, if you ve got the passion, all of that will probably take care of itself! 1 Submit CV and covering letter 2 Reply to our pre-screening questions 3 Short (~30 minute) phone interview 4 In person interview 5 Positions offered
