s t o r s i m p l e D a t a s h e e t Cloud-Integrated Enterprise Storage Appliance Family I/T organizations struggle with meeting the storage demands of high-growth business critical applications, and the challenges caused by storage when deploying these applications at scale. Cloud storage provides the promise of low-cost utility storage with numerous operational benefits, but does not meet enterprise requirements for data center storage due to the following challenges: - Security: Lack of visibility into provider security policies and encryption of customer data. - Performance: Cloud storage performance limited by bandwidth, latency, and packet loss, creating a large disparity between traditional storage and cloud storage. - Integration: Servers expect SCSI-based block protocol access, whereas storage clouds speak SOAP or RESTful HTTP. - Data Protection: Cloud storage replicates data, but provides little to no facilities for snapshots, backup, restore, or disaster recovery which are of paramount importance to data recovery. Cloud-integrated enterprise class storage overcomes the typical issues associated with cloud storage, making it usable in the data center as traditional storage without compromising on the stringent requirements I/T organizations place upon storage infrastructure. Further, cloud-integrated enterprise class storage seeks to reduce the infrastructure footprint typically required of traditional storage architectures for end-to-end management of data from primary storage, archival storage, backup, and disaster recovery, using a single integrated system rather than multiple disjointed products and management dashboards. Backups can be managed either from the appliance web GUI or from the StorSimple Data Protection MMC snap-in for Windows. StorSimple supports data protection for Windows, Linux, and VMware environments. Additionally, StorSimple s Data Restore Console (DRC) provides fine-grained object-level restore for Microsoft Exchange (2010) and Microsoft SharePoint (2007, 2010). StorSimple leverages single-instance storage locally and within the cloud. Although every backup is a full backup, the amount of data stored in that of a deduplicated, compressed incremental, improving performance. Further, restore operations are optimized to ensure minimal data transfer using local snapshot metadata and volume contents where possible and bringing cloned backups online without having to move anything more than volume metadata from the cloud to provide fast recovery. Disaster Recovery StorSimple Cloud Snapshots and Cloud Clones are consistent, point-in-time backup copies of volumes stored in the cloud. Use Case Virtual Private Storage Automated Tiering to the Cloud Primary Storage Deduplication and Compression StorSimple Value Virtual Private Storage (VPS) enables secure, on-demand use of public cloud storage services as though they were within your data center. StorSimple overcomes security issues associated with cloud storage through HTTPS (SSL) for data-inmotion, and encrypts all data written to a cloud storage service using AES-256-CBC using keys that you supply and control. Keys are never shared with StorSimple or with your cloud storage service provider to ensure data confidentiality and control. Cloud storage access is simplified by providing data center servers with iscsi access to volumes while StorSimple manages all communication to cloud storage using APIs and protocols provided by the cloud storage service. StorSimple automatically tiers chunks of data and metadata across integrated SSD and SAS storage tiers according to frequency of use, age, and data relationship, ensuring that working set and hotspot data is stored in the fastest tiers to provide high performance. StorSimple s algorithm, called Weighted Storage Layout or WSL, is transparent, meaning the server s view of storage never changes. Additionally, StorSimple s tiering is automatic, continually optimizing the layout of data according to shifts detected in the working set. StorSimple s automated tiering helps improve performance and minimize ongoing storage costs by handling up to 99% of I/O operations locally within the appliance while allowing older and less frequently-used blocks of data to be transparently transferred to lower-cost cloud storage for integrated archiving. StorSimple eliminates the storage of repeated, previously-seen data patterns using variable-length data deduplication to minimize storage growth and reduce cloud storage costs by up to 99%.
