The transformation of voice is accelerating Voice over IP (VoIP), once the preserve of tech-savvy early adopters, is reaching deeper into mainstream communications markets. Driven by the rapid global uptake of broadband, plus major improvements in the quality and security of calls, VoIP has changed the communications landscape forever. Traditional telephony pricing models are being swept away, replaced by tariffs that offer unlimited, any-distance calling within a larger bundle of services. VoIP is also breaking into mobile, rapidly gaining acceptance by industry players as an opportunity, not a threat. VoIP for all domains There are few technologies with as big a potential impact across the communications arena as VoIP. VoIP opens up superb new opportunities for all types of communications service provider (CSP), including fixed network operators, multiple service operators and mobile network operators. All can enjoy lower costs and the ability to offer advanced new services to consumers and enterprises, creating a roadmap for sustainable and profitable growth. Building bundles that raise revenue VoIP raises the value of service bundles, while simultaneously lifting the adoption rates of other services within the bundle. With VoIP, bundles can be differentiated on more than just price. Popular features such as caller ID, call blocking, selective call acceptance, and call waiting can be extended to other devices, such as a mobile phone or PC. PSTN phones, mobile phones, or dual-mode handsets, as well as IP phones and soft clients, can all be integrated. Subscribers benefit from having their features follow them from place to place. From one-stop shopping, to a single bill for services, to feature availability across devices and locations, to Web-enabled feature management, convenience lies at the heart of the end-user experience. Take, for example, a VoIP service that extends today s most popular features such as Caller ID to another domain, such as a television set. The sheer convenience of seeing the identity of the caller immediately on the TV screen is compelling. The subscriber has a new deal, while the CSP gets a new service. Manage multiple communications easily Providing subscribers with a graphical portal into their communications gives them greater control over the services they use as they manage their multidimensional lives, balancing family, social, civic and professional roles. A sales executive, for example, can manage contacts more easily, grouping them according to the nature of the exchanges. They can use preferences for when and how the customers make contact, or, alternatively, how suppliers, co-workers, or family members get in touch. Businesses subscribing to hosted VoIP services can improve the responsiveness of their employees. The most popular business group features, such as call forwarding, conferencing, call transfer, and call pick-up, are enhanced, while convenient features such as extension dialing are preserved. Presence and mobility management improve employees accessibility, helping to increase their productivity. Business subscribers can also enjoy features across domains. These features can be offered in packages that address all segments, ranging from SOHOs to large enterprises packages that can be customized to meet the specific needs of vertical markets. The fit of a services bundle to the needs of customers is crucial. With VoIP, more flexible and tailored bundling options bring real competitive advantages for CSPs. Rich communication packages can be created, enabling services matched to individual preferences, enriching the customer experience substantially. Ready for cable The Nokia Siemens Networks hiq VoIP system can be deployed using PacketCable and EuroPacketCable qualified network elements. It offers a multiprotocol, access-agnostic architecture that supports the technology and commercial advantages of PacketCable Multimedia, allowing cable companies to grow their business by introducing new services with committed QoS levels. Adding value for users and groups VoIP with the Nokia Siemens Networks hiq platform addresses the needs of groups of users, whether families, communities of interest, small offices or large enterprises. With the hiq 4300 Web application server CSPs can offer a variety of ways for customers to manage group calls. Automated call handling Individual users can define rules for treating incoming calls such as forwarding to a voice mailbox during a meeting, or forwarding to another number during their holidays. Alternatively, predefined group rules can be set. The rule engine can also be based on presence status to bring further capabilities. Manual call handling Business users typically need one number for their customers, yet want each caller to reach the appropriate contact in their business. The hiq 4300 enables a single attendant or a group of call agents to distribute calls within the company. The Web portal provides information about caller and queue statistics, such as waiting time, callers in queue and attendants on duty, allowing the enterprise to optimize the availability and responsiveness of its agents. Presence-based call handling With hiq, real-time presence information is combined with distribution rules and call handling features to enable users to select the best option for contacting them according to their situation, for example, via their mobile phone, e-mail account, or voice mailbox. Group administration Powerful calling group administration functionality lets a designated call administrator distribute features across group members. Predefined feature packages can be used for simplicity, or individual feature selections can be applied to fit the needs of the group perfectly. Reseller administration The hiq reseller administration function enables specific resources, such as number ranges or subscriber database, to be allocated to external partners. CSPs can pursue new growth strategies or concentrate on their core business while outsourcing other activities. Grouping across networks With hiq, customers TDM PBX lines, IP PBX lines, mobile phones and TDM devices can all be integrated. Adding these subscribers as virtual group members allows them to use the same private numbering plan and most of the Web-based functions available to SIP device users. This is a particularly powerful feature for mobile users who can become part of any business group and enjoy the same convenience as users of other device types. Beyond the creation of new applications, our VoIP SDKs ensure that the applications developed are successfully integrated into any operational environment and Service Delivery Framework (SDF). The SDKs can be used to program simple interfaces between the hiq platform and Operations Support Systems (OSS) and provisioning systems. There are vast possibilities for incorporating call functions into data applications, Web portals, social networking and community-oriented exchanges, commerce and trade applications. Increase the value of an existing Web portal with features for VoIP subscribers that typically include: Phone book: allow subscribers to manage all contacts within one page and to initiate calls from that view, from any device to any device. The phone book is presence based and also allows the user to define presence based call handling. Call log: give subscribers an overview of any accepted or rejected outgoing or incoming calls Feature administration: enable subscribers to configure phone features such as Call Forward, Caller ID and Call Block Voice mail: Voice Mails can be directly retrieved from the Web page or forwarded by e-mail, with e-mail notifications sent automatically once a voice mail is received. ComManager / Mobile ComManager: ComManager is a web based Communication Suite that allows the user to manage call features. ComManager is also available as a Java based application running on mobile devices. Attendant: Enables enterprise users to serve as part of a call queue, for example a service hotline, without needing a special device. The Web portal provides additional information about caller and queue statistics (waiting time, callers in queue, attendants on duty and more). This function lets the enterprise optimize the availability and responsiveness of its agents. Group administration: hiq offers calling group administration functionality which lets a designated call administrator distribute features across the members of a group. Predefined feature packages or individual adaptations can be applied, which helps ensure that each group member receives an optimized feature set. Reseller administration: The hiq reseller administration function allows users to allocate specific network resources (like the number ranges or subscriber database) to external partners, enabling CSPs to pursue new growth strategies or concentrate on the core aspects of their business while shifting non-core activities to others 6 VoIP for all networks, all users, all situations Nokia Siemens Networks hiq platform
