ACCELERATED TRAINING PROGRAM Recorded (r)/registered (R) Western Dressage Judges Listed below are the procedures required for Recorded (r)/registered (R) licensure as a Western Dressage judge. Consult Chapter 10 of the USEF Rules for a full description. Any questions should be directed to the Licensed Officials Department through the following email address: LOinquiry@usef.org. In accordance with GR1004.2, you must be At least 21 years of age; A Senior active member in good standing of USEF Licensing Requirement: USEF, FEI, and Equine Canada Dressage judges who have been hired and who have judged at least three (3) USEF or USEF/WDAA approved Western Dressage competitions will be required to complete the Clinic, Exam, and Online Testing requirements outlined below. Judges in the following categories will be required to complete the Clinic, Exam, Online Testing, and Apprentice Judging requirements outlined below. These requirements may be completed in any order. o USEF, FEI, and Equine Canada Dressage Judges who have not been hired or judged at least three (3) USEF or USEF/WDAA approved Western Dressage competitions. o USEF Andalusian/Lusitano, Arabian, Eventing, Friesian, Hunter, Hunter Seat Equitation, Morgan, Reining, Western licensed judges. o National Breed Association Judges with Western affiliations, e.g. AQHA, American Stock Horse Association, American Paint Horse Association, Pinto Horse Association of America, Appaloosa Horse Club, National Reining Horse Association. o Foreign Licensed Judges- with either Federation or National Associations whose breed rules offer Western Dressage classes, Western, Reining, Dressage or Eventing e.g. American Quarter Horse Association United Kingdom. o USDF L Graduates Clinic Requirement: The Western Dressage Association of America will put on one clinic each year during the Color Breed Council s International Judges Seminar. Additional clinics may be added as needed throughout the year. Exam Requirement: Applicants are required to take and pass a written exam on the USEF General and Western Dressage Rules. The Exam will be administered upon clinic sign-up. A passing score is 85%. Online Testing of Ridden Tests: Candidates will be required to take an online test including judging 16 or more ridden tests; Two Evaluators will grade the ridden tests. Scores will be given according to the following criteria; o Ability to evaluate each movement and make an appropriate and corresponding comment matching the score o Collective marks Comments should be constructive and positive for the rider; How gaits, impulsion, submission, rider position and use of effective aids, accuracy and geometry of figures are evaluated; and Main points for correction are identified; 1
o High or low scores that deviate from the Evaluators will be taken into consideration. However, the consistency of the Applicant s scoring is of the greatest concern. The emphasis will be on; Seeing the movement and scoring correctly; and Being able to address the differences between good and poor movements. o Terminology and vocabulary must be appropriate. Using the above criteria, the Evaluators will determine if the Applicant is satisfactory or unsatisfactory. They will provide feedback to the Applicant by providing them with a report which will include an explanation of the result. The Evaluator s recommendations will include a level recommended, i.e. a r or R Western Dressage license. Apprentice Judging: Applicants must apprentice judge at a minimum of three (3) USEF or USEF/WDAA approved competitions. Prior permission must be received from both the judge with whom the Applicant wishes to apprentice and competition management. Applicants must verify that the judge with whom they apprentice has previously judged Western Dressage as verified by Steward reports with the USEF. Fifteen (15) rides at each level (Intro, Basic, First, Second, and Third) must be included, of which five (5) must be at the highest test of each level. Applicants will provide the judge with whom they apprentice with a copy of the Apprentice Judges Evaluation Form, Observing Verification Form, and a stamped envelope addressed to USEF, 4047 Iron Works Parkway, Lexington, KY 40511. Judges must complete the Apprentice Judges Evaluation Form and return it directly to the Federation. They may recommend candidates for a r or R Western Dressage license. Group Apprentice Judging: Applicants may substitute one of the required individual Apprentice Judging experiences with Group Apprentice Judging. Group Apprentice Judging will take place at either the WDAA World show or at USEF or USEF/WDAA approved competitions offering classes at Second level or above. WDAA will organize Group Apprentice Judging experiences. o Information, e.g. dates/locations/instructors, will be posted on the USEF and WDAA websites. o Applicants will sign up through WDAA. o One or more Instructors who are not judging the competition will preside. o Classroom instruction and sideline judging of tests is included. o Each Applicant will have the opportunity to judge and scribe. o o Tests will be handed in to the instructor for review and comment. The Instructor will submit Apprentice Judges Evaluation Forms for each Applicant to the Federation together with the tests scored by them. Application for Enrollment: Once you have completed the above requirements, Your application for Recorded (r)/ Registered (R) status may be submitted to the USEF office. Upon receipt of all information, your application, fee and required information will be processed to determine if all requirements have been met. Licensed Officials Department staff will contact you if something is missing. When the Licensed Officials Department has verified that you have fulfilled the requirements, they will send reference evaluations regarding your experience and abilities to the o People listed on your application; and o Members of the relevant USEF Committees, i.e., Western Dressage. o WDAA will also be asked to comment. 2
Reference Evaluations: At least fifteen (15) Reference Evaluations which actually evaluate the applicant must be returned for the application to be reviewed by the Licensed Officials Committee. Eight (8) must be from the current roster of licensed officials or members of the Western Dressage Committee. NOTE: Do NOT include members of the Licensed Officials or Western Dressage Committees in your list of references as they will automatically receive your evaluation. A letter notifying you of the Committee s decision will be sent within approximately two weeks after the Committee meets. If the required number of Reference Evaluations has not been received, you will be notified in writing to o Submit additional names and addresses to be used as references; and o o Your application will be held for one additional meeting. If the required number of Reference Evaluations has not been received for a second meeting, your application with then be closed and you will be required to re-apply. The Licensed Officials Committee meets three times a year to review applications.
