Wealth & Tax Planning Private Insurance What is a Private Insurance? A Private Insurance (life insurance) is a commonly used instrument in wealth and tax planning. It is a contractual agreement between a policyholder and an insurance company in which the policyholder receives an insurance policy equivalent to the net asset value of the account held by the insurance company. A life insurance is a well-established and internationally recognised legal concept, regulated by specialised national authorities and offered by a growing number of jurisdictions (e.g. Ireland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg and Singapore). It is a long-term planning instrument and in many countries qualified for pension provision. As such it benefits from special asset protection rights. A Private Insurance offers many advantages. These include: Long-term and individual pension provision with occasional additional death cover Flexible inheritance and succession planning; the advantage of the rapid transfer of assets in the event of the insured person s death Tax benefits of a life insurance as a pension pro duct; depends on the country where the client is liable for tax Any individual or legal entity can be named as beneficiary. Beneficiaries can be changed at any time (exception: irrevocable beneficiaries) Wide range of investment possibilities to choose from The insurance policy can be pledged The client may terminate the policy or buy some of it back depending on terms, fees, minimum values and taxation considerations Please note: The use of such a structure depends on the legal form and the client specifics such as residence, nationality, etc. It is strongly recommended that legal/tax experts, e.g. from the country where the client is resident as well as from the country in which the investments shall be undertaken, are consulted to ensure proper handling of the overall situation.
