Tatton Investment Management Due Diligence Document Completed by: Sean Bryan Version: 02/07/13
Basic Information 1. Contracted Entity Cambridge Investment Management Ltd trading as Tatton Investment Management 2. What is your corporate background? Tatton Investment Management was founded in October 2012 and is part of the Paradigm Group of companies. We are a specialist investment manager that provides portfolio management services sourced from the whole of the investment management industry to a wide range of customers, including private clients, trusts and pension funds. It was established by Lothar Mentel, chief investment officer (CIO), who has 19 years of investment industry experience. Lothar also serves as CIO for the Paradigm Group. Though at the early-stage of development, Tatton has already rolled out a successful range of partnered solutions with a number of expert providers. We provide solutions only through professional advisers and ensure that clients needs and requirements are constantly taken into account. We believe, this gives you complete peace of mind that your investments and future investment goals are our priority. Our approach involves the daily monitoring and management of a client s portfolio and exposure to all relevant asset classes. Portfolios are constructed in line with leading adviser technology, which we argue ensures that there is a clear link between your portfolio and your investment objective, time horizon, attitude to and capacity for risk. 3. What is your investment approach? We analyse the global macroeconomic outlook and the potential impact(s) on client portfolios on a daily basis. We utilise research from some of the major financial institutions in the world to help guide our views. These include Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, BNP, Credit Suisse, JP Morgan, Bank of America-Merrill Lynch and UBS. This is also backed up with the use of data from highly respected research companies such as MRB Partners and BCA. We monitor the performance of the underlying fund managers on a daily basis. We regularly review the level of drift within the portfolios. This is on a fund and asset class basis. The investment decisions of TIM are made by its investment committee. This is made up of the following:- Lothar Mentel Chief of Investment Office of Paradigm Group 2
Chris Gough-Goodman Managing Director of Cambridge Investments Limited Stephen Keshishoghli Senior Portfolio Manager James Bruce Investment Manager Samuel Leary Investment Communications Alistair Coward Assistant Portfolio Manager Sean Bryan Compliance Manager The investment committee meets frequently and at least a monthly basis. The meetings follow a simple three step process as detailed below:- 1. Reviewing existing investments in the portfolio context. We compare the relative performance of various asset classes and funds against each other, along with appropriate benchmarks. 2. We analyse all available economic data and discuss potential scenarios and derive a common framework. 3. Funds and asset classes that cause an issue are then decided upon. If no decision is made, due to a lack of alternatives, further research will be conducted and the investment committee will reconvene in five days. All decisions are risk assessed in our Dynamic Planner and MorningStar tools to ensure that all investments meet their respective risk profiles. Given that our investment objective is to provide investors with the best possible returns for their chosen level of investment risk and time horizon, we believe this is best achieved through a well-diversified global portfolio of regulated investment funds, managed by the experts in their field. For each risk-rated portfolio, a well-defined strategic asset allocation sets the long term framework for our portfolio management service. This can help keep the portfolios on track even through the most challenging market conditions. Our active management portfolio overlay service is designed to protect investors against unintended risks that can arise when making an investment. This guardianship service is key to understanding the ethos of Tatton. In particular, we recognise that temporary irrational investor interest in individual asset classes can lead to dangerous 3
overvaluations colloquially asset bubbles. Historically, these asset bubbles have always fallen back to their long term average. We therefore focus our active investment management on tilting the long term strategic asset allocations of the portfolios in such a way as to avoid exposure to heavily overvalued asset classes. In our experience, a protective investment management approach is more likely to add significant value to clients investment portfolios. This strategic approach does not lose the long term benefits of the chosen asset allocation and can be superior to the more aggressive active approach of trying to identify and bet on asset classes which are expected to rise most in the near future. 5.
