Summary This report studies possible ways to save energy and water in domestic laundry through choosing different washing programs or temperatures. Randomly selected user manuals of 31 different washing machines from 14 producers were studied and the energy and water use of different programs was registered and compared. This way, information of machines available on the market in 2009-2010 was received. Consumers can contribute to significant reductions in energy and water consumption in washing by lowering the temperature or selecting an eco-program instead of normal basic program. Ten degrees temperature reduction on cotton program saves on average 0.23 kwh, but varied between 0.12-0.37 kwh. Using eco-program saved on average 0.27 kwh with variation from 0.09 to 0.60 kwh. About half of the studied eco-programs also save water 4-13 litres compared to the normal program. Washing machine filling grade on cotton program can be twice as much as on synthetics and three times as much as on wool program. Wool program uses more energy and water per kg laundry than cotton and synthetic programs, but since woollen garments are often used longer between washes, the energy and water consumption calculated as one day of use is reduced. Washing machines program selections and energy use Introduction In the project From waste to material resources in a grave to cradle perspective: A stakeholder approach within the textile value chain there is need for information of possible ways to save energy and water in domestic laundry. Consumers can affect this by several ways, such as: 1. Selecting energy and water efficient washing machine 2. Choosing washing program and temperature 3. Deciding washing frequency and filling grade. The first two points are studied in this report. User manuals of different washing machines from several producers are studied and the energy and water use of different programs are registered and compared here. The energy and water consumption information provided in user manuals was studied in order to evaluate the difference between programs, temperatures and the machines. This way, information of machines available on the market in 2009-2010 was received. This report concentrates on washing, so the matters of drying, ironing and other textile maintenance methods are excluded. Washing machine selection A total of 31 washing machine models from 14 different producers were randomly selected for the study. These are listed in Table 1. The washing machine selection is broad and main focus was to include different machine types from many producers in order to be able to see the variations better. The average results of these machines may not be exactly the same as the average of all sold machines in Norway, but it does give an indication. 18 front and 13 top loading machines were selected with capacities varying between 5 and 7 kg in different price classes. Front loading machines are more common in the Nordic marked. All of the machines had an energy class of minimum A, and the highest classes were labelled as A+ and A-20%. The washing performance of all the machines was rated to A, but the spin dry performance varied from C to A. Maximum spin drying speed varied between 1000 and 2000 rpm. The Table 1 lists also the spin speed of wool wash program for the machines when it was given. With the exception of two machines, the wool spin speed is lower than the maximum spinning speed of the machine. Unfortunately, 10 of the washing machines user manuals did not have comprehensive consumption information available. They were nevertheless included in the study in order to get broader picture of the available program selections as well as duration of different washing programs.

Results The collected information of washing programs consumption is attached in appendix I. Different consumption aspects of program and temperature selection are discussed below. When using the results, it has to be taken into account that they are based on information given by the producers in the user manuals. SIFO has experienced that these values sometimes differ from the real use values when the energy labelling of the washing machine is controlled [1-10]. Program selection Basic programs that all of the selected machines had were: Cotton (with varying names in Norwegian, such as koke/kulørt/intensive) Synthetics or easy iron (not always the same program) Delicates Wool Hand wash (sometimes same program as wool wash) Rinse, spin and drain. Table 2 lists energy, water and time consumption for the three most common washing programs; cotton, synthetics and wool. The different temperatures that are available for each program are given separately. The N colon indicates how many washing programs information was available for the calculation. Small N indicates that only some programs had information of the consumption values, and therefore these average values are less reliable than the values that have a large number of programs as basis for the calculation. 8 Washing machines program selections and energy use In addition to the above mentioned programs, most machines had other more specialised programs such as lingerie, shirts, dark clothing, baby cycle, and curtains. Some examples are given her: Rapid wash: Most of the machines have a program that is designed for fast washing. These programs are described as freshening up wash of only slightly soiled laundry and last 15-35 minutes in 30-40 C. The machine filling grade varies from 1.5 to 3.5 kg. The smallest load is given for 15 minutes washing programs, the longer ones tolerate usually half full machine. Daily wash: Usually pre-set to 40 C and has a shorter washing time than the basic cotton programs, varying from 29 to 70 min. Most of the programs are for half machine, with one exception that could be filled completely and one that only could be filled 1/3. Jeans wash: Seven of the machines had own program for jeans wash. Three of these had fixed temperature at 40 C, whereas on the others it can be varied usually form cold to 60 C. Most of the programs are for half machine, with only one exception that could be filled completely. Sports: Three of the machines had own program for sports clothing, either called as sports or jogging. The temperature in these varies from cold to 40 C with 2.5-3.0 kg load (half machine). Temperature reduction Some of the manuals had information of energy consumption of the same washing program with different temperatures. Energy reduction for 10 C temperature decrease was calculated and the results are given in Table 3. Lowering the washing temperature of cotton program with 10 C lead to a reduction of on average 0.23 kwh of energy per load. However, this number varied greatly from 0.12 to 0.37 kwh depending on the machine model. The effect was less on other programs that have smaller washing loads. For the synthetics program, the 10 C reduction lead to a 0.18 kwh reduction and for wool wash to 0.09 kwh reduction. Table 3. Eco-program On eleven of the machines, energy consumption of an eco-program could be compared to that of a normal cotton wash cycle. The average energy saving was 0.27 kwh (19 %), when the temperature and washing load was kept the same. The saving varied from 0.09 to 0.60 kwh. The eco-programs took on average 26 minutes longer than the normal wash programs, but this difference varied from 5 to 95 minutes. The longest eco-program took 4 hours. Half of the eco programs used the same amount of water as the normal program. The ecoprograms that had smaller water consumption saved 4-13 litres compared to the normal program.

Washing machines program selections and energy use 9 Conclusions Average cotton washing program uses more energy per washing than synthetics or wool program (table 2). This is mainly caused by the higher washing temperature and load. However, if the programs are compared at the same washing temperature, the difference in energy consumption decreases. As the cotton washing load is double to synthetics program and about three times the wool program, the difference in energy consumption measured as kwh/kg laundry is also of interest. This calculation is given in table 4. The results show that wool program uses more energy and water per kg laundry than cotton and synthetic programs. However, when interpreting the results, one should take into account that woollen garments are often used longer between washes, thus reducing the energy and water consumption calculated as one day of use. However, if it is assumed that the full capacity of the machine is used, the total energy consumption per kg laundry is about at the same level (Table 5). Table 5. Checking the consumption values before purchasing a washing machine can contribute to savings during use. Energy consumption of a 60 C cotton program can be double as much as on one machine compared to another, even though all the machines in the comparison were labelled with minimum energy class A. N
