LxO RAID High-Performance Online, Production and Cost-Effective Nearline Storage For maximum flexibility, the LxO system supports online, nearline, production, and standalone storage configurations. These systems are available in both non-redundant and redundant configurations. The Grass Valley media server/ media client system is ideal for broadcast and production environments, offering support for a wide range of applications to address specific workflow needs in the most cost-efficient and cost-effective ways possible. Platform Overview The platform is comprised of one or more media clients connected to one or more media servers and RAIDprotected storage. The media client performs all video and audio I/O using built-in encoders and decoders. You can attach more than 100 media client channels to the media server and RAID systems in a SAN configuration. The standalone system offers options for internal drives or external RAID systems. SAN systems can easily scale to provide more storage and/or bandwidth non-destructively without losing your data. For its part, the media server manages the file system, quality-ofservice (QOS) for bandwidth control, and file transfer protocol () operations. For storage, the system supports online configurations for direct-play-toair applications and low-cost, nearline options for media stored in MXF Op1a, GXF (SMPTE 360M), or QuickTime wrappers. Online, Nearline, Production, Standalone For maximum flexibility, the LxO system supports multiple online, nearline, production, and standalone storage configurations. These systems are available in both non-redundant and redundant configurations. On-Line Storage The three basic online RAID storage systems (Figure 1) scale from lower-priced systems that support from 4 to approximately 20 channels, to mid-range systems that go up to approximately 50 channels, to custom systems supporting hundreds of channels. You can add more storage and more bandwidth to any configuration as well as make it redundant (Figure 2). Production SAN Storage For ingest and editing applications, a production version of Lx0 storage is available with high capacity 7.2k SAS drives. This works well for a workflow with a SAN for editing and when finished, content is pushed to another system for playout (Figure 5). KEY FEATURES Uses the latest IT technologies for best price/performance: 7.2k or 15k RPM SAS drives 10 Gb/s Ethernet connectivity 4 Gb/s Fibre Channel connectivity Highest bandwidth systems in the industry Multiple options to meet your exacting needs for online, production, and nearline storage Scalable bandwidth easily add bandwidth to existing systems Scalable storage easily add storage non-destructively to existing systems High availability redundant components include hot swappable power supplies, fans, disk drives, RAID controllers, mirrored system drives Less complex systems can be built with fewer components, in less rack space, for higher reliability Open-storage technology supports industry standards: CIFS for broad access to video/audio files MXF/GXF/QuickTime wrappers Gigabit Ethernet connectivity Built-in QOS with dynamic-bandwidth allocation guarantees available video/ audio bandwidth while sharing the rest for transfers Storage architecture supports 15k RPM SAS drives for highestperformance online storage or 7.2k SAS drives for lowest cost/gb of storage 4 Gb/s Fibre Channel RAID controllers offer highest performance available www.grassvalley.com
product data sheet Three Online Configurations Figure 1 The LxO system supports three basic online-storage configurations: Level 10, 20, and 30. You can configure their total bandwidth and storage to fit your application precisely. A Level 40 custom configuration is also available; it supports more than 100 channels and several thousand MB/s of bandwidth and hundreds of TBs for creating the very largest video server systems. Featuring RAID-6 protection with up to 400 MB/s of bandwidth, it can scale up to 86.4 TBs of raw storage. Standalone Storage For standalone clients with large storage requirements, we offer a directly connectable RAID system with up to 30 TB of RAID-protected external storage (Figure 4). Lx0 RAID Systems Lx0 RAID systems use the latest technologies on the market, including dual ported, 4 Gb/s Fibre Channel RAID controllers, high-performance SAS drives, RAID-5 or RAID-6 protection, dual power supplies and hot-swappable components all wrapped into a 2 RU package. You can expand any of these enterprise-class configurations, without losing a byte of data, for more storage and/or more bandwidth. The RAID-6 protection of the RAID systems provides a particularly higher level of redundancy than conventional systems by protecting against a two-drive failure in a group of 6 or 12 drives. This ability offers nearly the same level of protection as a fully mirrored system but at a fraction of the cost. For extra protection, you can add hot standby drives to automatically replace any failed drive and start the rebuild process immediately. Using standby drives provides extra time before a failed drive can be physically replaced and minimizes the chance of data loss. www.grassvalley.com
product data sheet Production SAN Storage On-line storage for play-to-air systems requires very highperformance, low-latency storage systems in order to play to air without missing a frame of data. Recording video and editing applications require high performance, but internal buffering puts less stress on the storage system. As such, we offer a Production version on the Lx0 SAN with high-capacity 7.2k RPM SAS drives. This provides a very cost-effective, highcapacity ingest and editing SAN system for data rates up to 100 Mb/s. Nearline Storage A nearline system is an ideal, cost-effective central architecture for your facility. You can deploy it as an archive system, as temporary storage, or as storage for editing or other applications. Our nearline systems scale from 12 to 86.4 TBs of raw storage and up to 400 MB/s of bandwidth. Larger custom systems can be built as required. The system supports simple connections as well as CIFS connections for NLEs. The systems store data in industry-standard wrappers: MXF Op1a, GXF (SMPTE 360M), or QuickTime. Direct Attach Storage Our standalone client supports internal drives for a compact package. If you need more capacity, you can substitute an external RAID system for internal drives; this system supports up to 48 drives with RAID-5 or RAID-6 protection with a redundant RAID controller for added protection. Media Server The media server is the engine of the system. It manages the file system, transfers and connects clients to a storage system. Its built-in QOS guarantees that enough bandwidth is always available to your video channels, regardless of other demands on the system. The server will also dynamically allocate bandwidth where needed, redirecting bandwidth that is not needed for real-time operations to nonreal-time functions, such as or CIFS transfers. The server uses technology over Gigabit Ethernet connectivity for a highly reliable connection between its client and storage. For reliable performance, it uses TCP/IP offload engines (TOE cards) to minimize its CPU load. You can also add additional media servers to a system for more video/ audio bandwidth or to function as a dedicated server (see Figure 2) with 1 Gb/s or 10 Gb/s connections to support devices such as high-speed tape archive systems. Cost-Effective Nearline Storage Figure 3 nearline systems offer cost-effective storage without sacrificing support for high-bandwidth file transfers. -NL120R FC connections Redundant NAS Heads RAID chassis with redundant RAID controllers Up to 11 expansion chassis with 12 TB each Direct-Attached External Storage Figure 4 A standalone client can house up to 4.8 TB of storage internally or support up to 30 TB of RAID-5 or 24 TB of RAID-6 protected external storage.
