ABOUT US The University of Madras will be entering 157 th year of its establishment in 2014-2015. The University of Madras, organized in the model of London University, was incorporated on 5th September 1857, by an Act of the Legislative Council of India. The partnership between the University of Northampton and the University of Madras at Chennai, India, was established in 2008. It brought together the established expertise of e-learning and environmental management from the University of Northampton, and the strengths of University of Madras in specialist areas like sustainability and GIS. The University of Madras, established in 1857, is one of a handful of universities in India to have been awarded the top-rated A Grade accreditation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Committee (NAAC), and has been identified as one of five Centres of Excellence by the University Grants Commission. ABOUT THE PROGRAMME In a unique collaboration, the universities of Madras and Northampton are offering a joint Master s Degree programme in international environmental management. MSc. International Environmental Management provides an exciting and unique opportunity to benefit from a modular part-time programme of studies, gain a degree from a UK university and enhance your employment opportunities. The learning and teaching is primarily delivered via a Virtual Learning Environment, fully supported by Module Learning Packs and academic tutors from both Universities via email, and face-to-face week long workshops that are held annually at the University of Madras. The part-time nature of the awards allows the balancing of the demands of family and the workplace, with the attraction of gaining post-graduate qualifications MSc International Environmental Management has been specifically designed to meet the needs and ever growing sustainability demands of a rapidly developing and modern India. It aims to provide students from a diversity of backgrounds (e.g. Government, industry and NGOs) with the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge at postgraduate level that will enable them to become effective environmental managers. Students will develop the critical, analytical skills associated with postgraduate training as well as acquiring a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the principles of environmental management. In addition to the acquisition of subject-specific skills and knowledge, the programmes of study equips its graduates with a range of transferable skills, providing a solid foundation for advancement into further research, if so desired. Within the VLE, students can communicate with staff and fellow students. A University email and portal allows access to a wide range of personal development skills resources. A specialist librarian also supports the students in obtaining the best use of a wealth of webbased documentation, including a large range of academic e-journals and e-books. The teaching team will also support students using email, face-to-face meetings and workshops.

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES MSc International Environmental Management and associated interim awards have been specifically designed to meet the needs and ever growing sustainability demands of a rapidly developing modern India Delivered at the University of Madras in a range of formats (parttime, full-time and blended learning) it aims to provide students from a diversity of backgrounds with the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge at postgraduate level that will enable them to become effective environmental managers. The aim is for students to develop the critical, analytical skills associated with postgraduate training as well as acquiring a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the principles of environmental management, and be trained to undertake the research required to tackle environmental issues. In addition to the acquisition of subject-specific skills and knowledge, the programmes of study will equip its graduates with a range of transferable skills PROGRAMME STRUCTURE AND COURSE OF STUDY The modules are worth 20 credits and each takes 12 weeks to complete. This includes time specifically set aside so that you can focus on working on assignments. The Modules available include: Research & Analytical Methods; Climate Change and Risk Management; Environmental Management Policy and Control; Wastes Management in India; Pollution Abatement Technologies; GIS and Remote sensing; Sustainable Development; Environmental Psychology and the International Research Thesis (MSc only; 60 credits). The MSc programme is normally studied part-time over a three year period. On average, most students need to study for about 12-15 hours per week, although it may be more or less depending on your background and study experience. Postgraduate Diploma International Environmental Management: To be eligible for the award the student must complete 120 credits not including ENVM011 the Research Thesis. Postgraduate Certificate International Climate Change: To be eligible for the award the student must complete ENVM028 and ENVM033 and one of ENVM030, ENVM032 or ENVM034. Postgraduate Certificate International Wastes Management: To be eligible for the award the student must complete ENVM029, ENVM030 and ENVM031. Postgraduate Certificate International Environmental Management: To be eligible for the award the student must successfully complete 60 credits of modules from the table

above excluding ENVM011, in combinations which do not lead to the awards listed above. ELIGIBILITY Candidates should possess a first or second-class honours degree from a UK/ Indian universities/ institutions or equivalent. That degree will normally be in a recognised environmental science discipline such as physical geography, biology, environmental chemistry, geology or a related area (including engineering). Those with degrees in other social science subjects including law will also be considered, according to the interests and background of the candidate DURATION The M.Sc programme is normally studied part-time over a Two (2) year period with 180 credits, although a Post-graduate Certificate normally takes One (1) year with 60 credits and a Post-graduate Diploma Two (2) years with 120 credits ATTENDANCE This online course consists of a series of modules studied independently through a carefully structured programme of work supported by a weeklong workshops held twice annually at the University of Madras. Each module takes 12 weeks to complete. TEACHING / LEARNING METHODS The online course delivered via the Blackboard Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), students undertake either three (3) (Certificate level), six (6) (Diploma), or seven (7) (Masters) modules to complete their programme of studies. Module content is delivered via the VLE, and is supported by Module Learning Packs which contain text, videos, PowerPoint slides, academic papers, webinars, and other electronic resources. One Week Induction workshop will be conducted each year at the Department of Geography, University of Madras, Chennai, PROGRAMME FEE The tuition fee for the course is Rs 150,000/-. Payments may be made in two installments of Rs 75,000/- also. The installment plan for September 2014 is as follows: 1st installment of Rs 75,000/- (30 th September 2014) 2nd installment of Rs 75,000/- (30 th September 2015) The collection of course fees is the responsibility of the University of Madras. Students can pay their fees in Demand Draft (DD) in favour of "The Registrar, University of Madras, Chennai. ADMISSION Students are accepted onto MSc International Environmental Management course in September of each year. University of Madras (UoM) Admissions Committee will scrutinise the applications in-line with their policies and procedures and will recommend the list of candidates to UN within one (1) week of the application deadline date ASSESSMENT All modules that are assessed by coursework alone, with no examinations. The course is assessed by tutor marked written assignments (WAs) and time constrained assignments (TCAs). The coursework itself takes a variety of forms, and there are between two and three items of assessment for each module. Assessment methods include: reports, data analysis/interpretation, case studies, audits and essay, research dissertation (MSc only) and time constrained tasks. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS The course is particularly designed for individuals already working in local government or NGOs in the urban sector, environmental and community development sector, wishing to develop their understanding of sustainability as conceptual and practical tool. The eligibility requirement is a good Honors / Bachelor degree from a recognized Institution of Higher Education / University. Preference will be given to the relevant professional experience. The qualifying degree will normally be in a recognized environmental science discipline such as physical geography, biology, environmental chemistry, geology, engineering or a related area. Those with degree in other social science subjects including law will also be considered, according to the interests and background of the candidate.
