RESIDENTIAL STATUS: Full Fee Paying overseas applicants may be considered for admission to postgraduate courses. An overseas applicant is a person who is not: an Australian citizen a New Zealand citizen (however permanent residents of New Zealand are classed as overseas students) a migrant holding a visa giving permanent resident status in Australia; or a refugee. The Category of overseas applicant includes holders of permits for temporary entry into Australia, such as: overseas students diplomats temporary residents who hold permits for work purposes dependents of the above. RULES: Applicants should familiarise themselves with the relevant course rules (attached) before lodging their application. TERTIARY QUALIFICATIONS: 1. All applicants who have completed relevant tertiary studies must submit an original academic transcript which provides evidence of all subjects taken, grades obtained (including failures), stage reached or qualification gained. The transcript must be obtained by the applicant from the institution concerned and submitted with the application. 2. Applicants who graduated from NRCAE, UNENR or Southern Cross University are not required to provide documentation for those particular courses.
3. Applicants who are currently enrolled in an institution are asked to present their examination results and/or assessment notification immediately it is available. 4. Applicants who have completed overseas tertiary studies and have documents which are not in English MUST submit Certified English Translations as well as copies of the original documents. 5. If your academic records are not from NRCAE, UNE-NR or Southern Cross University, consideration of your application will be affected if this University cannot make a comparison with our standards, particularly in relation to grades. For overseas qualifications, you should consult us or obtain official assistance. For informal advice from this office, write or telephone the Research Training Unit (02) 6620 3414. You may ask the Head of the Department, School or Faculty in which you worked or the College director or Director of Research and Research Training of the School you seek to enter at Southern Cross University for a written opinion of the equivalence of your degree to an Australian grade of Honours, which you can attach to your application. Note that the people concerned are not obliged to provide you with such a certificate. If you have a Masters degree you will assist your case by providing official evidence of: (a) the proportion of research culminating in the thesis that you completed towards the total requirements for the degree. Note that not less than 50% research and thesis is usually required for entry to this University s PhD course; (b) the class of pass, if any, e.g. Honours I; (c) whether you completed in minimum time. ADMISSION: To be admitted, applicants should normally possess Honours I or IIA for a PhD or Honours I or II for a Masters by thesis, or equivalent tertiary qualification. However, applicants may be admitted on the basis that their work experience and/or published or other written material together constitute the equivalence of Honours at the level required. It is nevertheless the applicant s responsibility to convince the Higher Degrees Research Committee by submitting all relevant details. and those with Permanent Resident Status, applications for admission will be considered only if a place is available and at least one of the following criteria has been satisfied: 1. The thesis topic is compatible with the Principal Supervisor s research area; or 2. In the view of the Higher Degrees Research Committee, the proposed Principal Supervisor has a demonstrably outstanding track record in successful supervision of HDR candidates, and/or has a demonstrably outstanding national or international track record in research in the area of the proposed topic; or 3. The applicant has been awarded an externally funded stipend scholarship (other than an APA) to undertake the project, and the value of the stipend is at least equivalent to the value of the stipend for an APA (currently $20,007 p.a.); or 4. The applicant has completed a Qualifier at the University which was commenced prior to 1st July, 2001. To qualify for this criterion, an application normally should be received within 6 months of completing the Qualifier. ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: If your undergraduate studies were not undertaken in English or if your first language is not English, you must convince the University that your standard of English is sufficient for you to study successfully here. You must submit: (a) an original IELTS test result, showing a score of 6.5 or better, including a minimum score of 6.0 in the sub-bands (http://www.ielts.org); or (b) an original TOEFL test result showing a score of 580 or better (min score of 237 for computer based), and a Test of Written English (TWE) score of at least 5.0 (http://www.toefl.org). Other evidence of ability to study in English may be considered, and any evidence should not be more than two (2) years old at the date of application. For citizens of some countries, an IELTS test is required by the Government of Australia for the granting of a student visa.
