When the checkpoint is performed, the inactive portion of the transaction log is marked as reusable: BACKUP LOG database without any option performs checkpoint and makes the log file available for reuse, but it does not shrink the file, if the file has already grown in size. With more frequent full backups the log is being truncated more frequently and the log doesn t have time to grow and fill up the disk. A second option is to run a shrink operation via a maintenance plan before a full backup is scheduled to run.
