In addition, masters and doctoral programs are offered at The Graduate Center. The Graduate Center The Graduate Center is home to thirty interdisciplinary research centers and institutes focused on areas of compelling social, civic, cultural and scientific concerns. In all, the CUNY system houses more than 100 such enterprises. The centers also offer academic resources, access to archives, exciting research opportunities and a wide range of events. Graduate students take advantage of internship and employment possibilities, as well as opportunities to work with other students and distinguished faculty to create new knowledge that helps people work and live better. Here s a look at four of our centers. Applied Sciences Institute Founded in 1987, the Applied Sciences Institute (ASI) at Brooklyn College comprises ten research institutes at the college: Applied Vision, Aquatic Research and Environmental Assessment, Electrochemistry, Environmental Sciences, Feeding Behavior and Nutrition, Laser, Neural and Intelligent Systems, Semiconductor, Surface Science and Catalysis and Surfactant Research. The Institute s purposes are to promote significant funded research in a broad range of applied sciences, to promote economic development through interaction with local and regional industry and to create educational opportunities including those for women and minorities that help increase the technological and scientific work force needed for the economic health of the city. Gotham Center for New York City History The Gotham Center s mission is to examine and explore the city s rich history, and to make it more accessible to citizens and scholars, teachers and students. The Center brings together an array of talented scholars, curators and archivists, librarians and teachers, filmmakers and preservationists, all of whom study, preserve and present New York s rich and fascinating past. The goal is to entertain by showcasing one of the most fascinating cities on earth, and to illuminate the present by thinking critically about the past. New York is in constant flux; understanding how it evolved will help shape its future. The New York City Early Childhood Professional Development Institute This public/private partnership brings together a range of city agencies, private funders and the nation s largest urban university to build a system of professional development for individuals who work with young children in New York City. The Institute is founded on the belief that children need to spend their most critical years with dedicated, educated, trained and well-compensated individuals in order to thrive in today s society. Institute leaders work to ensure that all early childhood practitioners have access to a system of professional development that supports high-quality services for New York City s children and their families. The CUNY Urban Health Collaborative The Collaborative was created to strengthen teaching, research and practice in urban health within the City University of New York. The growing urbanization of the world s population, the impact of city living on health and the CUNY mission of serving New York combine to make urban health a natural focus for this institution. With more than 200,000 students who reflect the diversity of the city and more than 100 health-related academic programs, CUNY brings a wealth of resources to the study of urban health.
