ISANE Isoparaffin Products
High Product Purity The Isane range is a unique range of products that is characterized by a high purity level, low odor, low surface tension, and relative chemical inertness. They are available in a wide range of initial boiling points. Depending on the product, the boiling range may be as narrow as 1 to 15 C. Thanks to their unique set of properties, they rapidly established themselves as a key ingredient in applications ranging from decorative paint formulation to metal working. They are available in a wide spectrum of flash points and evaporation rates. Wide Array of Evaporation Rates Isane products display a low surface tension, hence excellent wetting properties. This makes them particularly appreciated in applications such as cleaning products, dry handcleaners, defoamers, or degreasing agents. Furthermore, their branched structure brings additional advantages compared to linear hydrocarbon analogs. Cleaning And Degreasing l l l Food and pharmacopeia approvals l l l Due to their low surface tension hence good wetting properties Isane fluids are often used in wood, plastic and metal cleaning applications. They can also be used in defoaming and water treatment applications. Thanks to their high purity and relative inertness, Isane products can be used in most applications where approval for direct or indirect food contact is required. They are particularly appreciated in cleaning applications as they combine several key properties such as chemical inertness (isoparaffins are relatively inert toward most polymers such as polystyrene and polyethylene), low surface tension, good degreasing ability, low residual maters, and low odor. Typical grades used in this application include: IP1, IP12, IP14, IP155, IP175, IP185 and IP2 Listed below are the approvals for the Isane products. With the increasingly tight regulations, these solvents offer a clear advantage in terms of workers comfort, hazard (Isane fluids offer a high flash point) and inertness toward a wide range of substrates. Typical grades used in this application include: IP14, IP155, IP175, IP185 and IP2 Inkjet Printing l l l Solvent based ink formulations typically contain a solvent carrier, pigment or dye, surfactants and antiseptics. Isoparaffins where found to bring a good balance of properties allowing good dispersion efficiency and fast drying. In addition, their low electric conductivity and selective solvency power are a plus in these applications Typical grades used in this application include: IP1, IP12, IP14 and IP155 Flash Point Isane grade Selection 8 IP 2 7 6 5 IP 14 4 IP 12 IP 1 2 1 5 1 15 2 Vapor Pressure (mba) 25 5 Isane Product Epa/Fda Approvals IP 1 IP 12 IP 14 IP 2 Purity requirements for liquid paraffins European pharmacopoeia EC Regulation n 195/24 Foodstuff, consumer goods, animal feed codes FDA 178.5 FDA 178.62b Paints and Coatings l l l Hydrocarbon solvents are widely used in decorative paint formulation. In recent years, as regulations are becoming more stringent, the formulators are increasingly turning to dearomatized hydrocarbon solvents such as those provided by Total Fluides. And more recently, Isoparaffinic solvents are also making their appearance in paint formulations because of their unique qualities. Isane isoparaffinic products are increasingly being used in paint formulation as they provide several advantages to the formulator. Similarly to white spirits, Isane products have good solvency power towards most alkyd resins used in decorative paint formulations. Their low odor brings a significant advantage in terms of personnel comfort without sacrificing the key paint properties such as gloss, dry to touch time, recoat time, washability, etc. In addition, because they come with a very low aromatic content and high OEL (Occupational Exposure Limit), they are becoming widely accepted in the decorative paint market. Typical grades used in this application include: IP 1, IP 12, IP 14 and
Metal working fluids l l l Polymers l l l Hydrocarbon fluids are often used in metal working fluid formulations to reduce friction, lubricate and carry away heat, flush and remove metal chips and dirt, reduce noise and dissipate pressure, and to protect from rust and moisture. Isane products are particularly recommended for applications like: - Rolling oils where low viscosity is a plus ( ) - EDM (Spark Erosion) where high purity allows for significant enhancement of conductivity potential ( IP 2) - Rust preventing oils for which stability at low and high temperature is a key feature ( IP 14 ) Both metal working precision and tool life benefit from the high performance of Isane fluids: Narrow boiling range is required for controlled drying rate Low odor as well as ultra low aromatic content greatly improve workers comfort Isoparaffins are often used in alkylation processes, extraction processes, as well as polymerization. For which their purity (virtually sulfur, benzene and aromatic free), low odor and non polar character (Isane products are completely saturated) make them particularly suitable for several polymerization processes. Slurry polyolefin polymerization is another area where isoparaffins are widely used. Over the last decade, slurry polymerization capacity around the world has grown at a yearly pace of 5 to 7 %. This growth has been partly driven by the success of bimodal polymer distribution (for film, pipes, blow molding, etc.). Other applications include PTFE dispersions, polysiloxane molding compounds, or carriers for catalysts in polymerization processes Typical grades used in this application include: IP1, IP12, IP14, IP155, IP175, IP185 and IP2 Low surface tension provides better fluid spreading on metal surfaces High purity and high stability reduce oxygen, moisture and rust attack Evaporation rate vs Flash Point Ultra low sulfur content confers non staining properties, Low pour points reduce risks of haze development in films at low temperatures Comprehensive range of flash points allowing for tailored solutions. The graph below displays the carbon distribution of Isane products versus those of white spirits and kerosene products. As can be seen, Isane fluids narrow carbon distribution allows for a controlled evaporation rate while minimizing flammability risks during metal working operations.
