AHCF conducts an intensive program combining both structured long term care academic instruction with everyday, practical experiences. The primary goal of this program will be that, upon completion, individuals are prepared for both licensure examinations and also equipped to meet the many challenges and demands they will encounter as administrators in skilled nursing facilities. The Administrator In Training (AIT) course is a 640 clock hour course, offered twice per year by the Arkansas Health Care Foundation (AHCF). The program is available to individuals who otherwise do not have the education and work experience to be eligible for licensure exams. Once completed, participants will become qualified for the two required licensure examinations: the Arkansas State exam offered through the Office of Long Term Care, and the National Association of Long Term Care Administrator Boards (NAB) exam. The 16-week program has two complementary components which must be completed in their entirety in order to receive a certificate of completion: classroom instruction and facility-based instruction. The two are interspersed together throughout the 16 weeks. Trainees will serve their internship at a local skilled nursing facility which employs a certified preceptor. During the training, the administrator trainee will be expected to work 40 hours per week on a Monday through Friday 8 hour per day work schedule. However, scheduling for the facility based instruction will ultimately be directed by the certified preceptor within the facility. Note that the AIT s attendance policy for classroom instruction is extremely rigorous and strict. If a student must leave a course due to unpreventable circumstances, the student will be required to drop the course and re-enroll in the program at a later date. Each trainee must complete the program in its entirety without interruptions before a certificate of completion can be issued. There is a $100 application deposit that, if accepted into the program, is applied to the total cost of the course. However, if an applicant is not accepted into the AIT course, the applicant forfeits the application fee. For individuals who already qualify for state and NAB licensure examinations, AHCF offers the AIT Audit program. These students have the education and work experience as well as the general requirements to be eligible for licensure exams. Candidates complete 64 hours of classroom training over the course of 16 weeks; however, the facility-based instruction is omitted. Class dates and times will be the same as the full AIT course. Course Instruction The classroom instruction component of the AIT program is designed to provide the administrator trainee with the necessary academic knowledge to successfully manage a long term care facility. The AHCF curriculum incorporates the five Domains of Practice established by the National Boards of Examiners for nursing Home Administrators (NAB): Leadership and Management Human Resources Finance Physical Environment and Atmosphere Resident Care and Quality of Life Content specialists working in long term care will teach the Five Domains of Practice. To ensure a more thorough understanding of regulatory, reimbursement, and liability issues, the administrator trainee will attend educational workshops presented by other content specialists in the field. Specific workshops topics include: Survey Process and Enforcement, Resident Rights, Abuse Complaints and Reporting, Liability Issues and Risk Management, Medicare and Medicaid billing, Rate Setting, and Cost Reporting. These workshops will be scheduled by the AHCF and will be completed during classroom time. Facility-Based Instruction The administrator trainee will complete the internship component in the nursing facility under the supervision of a certified preceptor. This section of the course is designed to provide the administrator trainee the opportunity to apply his/her academic knowledge in a practical environment. The program administrator has designed a training manual for each department within the facility. The trainee, certified preceptor, and department heads will use this manual as a resource to ensure that each department is studied satisfactorily. Upon conclusion of a departmental study, the trainee and department manager will complete a performance evaluation, which will then be reviewed and signed by the preceptor. Likewise, at the end of the internship, the candidate and the preceptor will complete an overall performance evaluation that will indicate whether or not the trainee has satisfactorily completed the facility-based instruction component. This evaluation will be reviewed during the course instruction period and also sent to AHCF to be place in the trainee s file. Facility Internship: Trainees will complete 568 clock hours within the facility over 16 weeks While completing the facility based training, AITs will complete a requisite number of hours within each of the following departments: Administration Human Resources Nursing/Resident Care Rehabilitation Medical/Resident Records Activities Social Services/Admissions Business Office/Financial Dietary Management Housekeeping/Laundry Maintenance/Environmental Course/Internship Objectives: Prepare candidates both academically and experientially for the Administrator s licensure examination and administrative positions in a skilled nursing facility Expand both the scope and breadth of trainees specific departmental knowledge in a facility Promote effective Administration, Leadership and Human Resource strategies Completion of Program: Once the trainee has completed the AIT program, the Office of Long Term Care will approve him/her for State and NAB examinations Trainee will be responsible for testing fees and must attempt both exams within 6 months of completion of AIT program Must receive at least a score of 70 on the state exam at least a score of 113 on the NAB examination in order to be issued an AR nursing home administrator license If candidate scores below passing, he/she will be required to complete a course of study determined by AHCF For more information, please contact Jennifer Pearson, Education Coordinator, 501-374-4422, jpearson@arhealthcare.com 1401 W.
