Composite materials are a mix several material: Reinforcement Matrix matrix (resin) reinforcement (fibres) Eventually other materials Composite Considered as a heterogeneous material with anisotropic properties Material properties can be adapted according to loads = weight saving 3

Main types of raw materials: Resin: polyester, vinylester, epoxy Fibres: glass, carbon, para-aramid, others Reinforcement fabrics: mat, unidirectional, roving, combined fabrics Core materials: foam, balsa wood, honeycomb. Prepregs: Pre-impregnated Fabrics with resins Structural adhesives 4

2 main families: Monolithic : assembly of layers Sandwich asssembly by bonding of a core and 2 monolithics skins 5

Specificities of composites structure versus / metallic structure : Material elaborated at same time than structure is built. Different type of process : Hand lay-up, Vacuum assisted process, Infusion, Prepregs. Material final characteristics depends on laminates scantlings but also on manufacturing Main composites advantages vs metallic materials Unlimited choice of material High range of mechanical characteristics Light material Absence of corrosion and good ageing behaviour in marine environment Non magnetic property / low thermal conductivity / high electrical resistivity Transparency to electromagnetic waves / low attenuation of acoustic waves 6

Composites applications on BV classed vessels : Ships Hull : currently any type up to +/- 50m: Yachts Fishing vessels HSC OPV Crew boats Pilot /patrol vessels Wind farm service vessels Special service vessels Passenger vessels Rescue life boats 7

Composites applications on BV classed vessels : Superstructures/ decks Watertight doors, hatches, Tanks, Masts, Rudders, rudder stocks, fins, ESD Hand rails, gratings Waterjet tunnels, propellers, shafts line Ship repair (SPS system, copatch project..) 8
