TAYLOR MBA SPORTS MANAGEMENT

MBA is MVP of sports management industry, some say. Students with sports MBAs may have an advantage over peers with master of arts or science degrees. US News & World Report full article The Taylor University MBA Sports Management program equips students with both business acumen and sport industry knowledge and experience. Graduates will be prepared for a variety of careers in sport business management, sports business ventures, athletic administration, coaching and team operations at all levels. Learn More About Program Structure, pg 2 Global Study Tour, pg 4 Curriculum, pg 6 Tuition, pg 8 Financial Aid, pg 10 Career Opportunities, 12 Admissions, pg 14 1.

Program Structure The program spans 21 months, beginning in August. Students complete a total of 42 credit hours including experiential learning and internship hours. The chart below provides further details on how the program is structured and the curriculum is delivered. Face-to Face Sessions Graduate Assistant Work (Internship) International Study Tour Online Learning One Monday Every Month Fall sessions: September, October, November, & December J-Term Sessions: January Spring sessions: February, March, April, & May 20+ hours per week In season, GAs should expect to spend more than 20 hours per week on their internship. However, in the off-season GAs should have more flexibility and spend closer to 20 hours/week. Graduate Assistant Work: GAs should expect to work at least 20 hours per week. Depending on the season and position, weeks may require more than 20 hours. For students who already hold a sports position (e.g. High School Athletic Director, Minor League Sports Team, etc.): These positions may meet the experience/internship requirement, but will require prior approval in order to receive credit. 10-12 day International Trip All students are required to participate in the Global Study Tour course which requires international travel during the summer between year 1 and 2 of the program. Varying Degrees for Each Course Each course supplements learning with an online component. Students participate in online discussion, submit assignments, & access additional classes materials via Blackboard. Note: The instructional elements and delivery modes for the MBA Sports Management program are critical to the success of the program objectives. Therefore, students are expected to have regular internet access and to attend all class sessions. Any absence from a cohort activity, either in class or online, may jeopardize the timely and successful completion of the program. 2. Monthly Class Sessions: Students go to MBA residencies one Monday every month, where they attend class sessions. These sessions combine classroom instruction from experienced graduate faculty, presentations by industry experts, case studies, group work, peer-to-peer networking, and one-on-one mentoring and interaction with faculty. Distance Learning: Every course is supported to varying degrees with Blackboard, an internet-delivered classroom environment. It provides shared access to course documents, discussion boards, small group exercises, chats, an online grade book, and constant communication with other cohort members, professors, and MBA program offices. Courses offered over the summer and J-Term will be fully online except for the Global Study Tour which requires international travel. Travel/Study Tour: An overseas study tour is part of the curriculum for each cohort. This experience is designed to give students exposure to international sports venues and events, and using sports to share Christ. Professors will accompany the students on the trip, providing real-time commentary and application for student observations and experiences.

Global Study Tour Leaders in the sport management industry can no longer ignore globalization. Every leader must be prepared and equipped to lead in a global, cross-cultural world. To meet these ever changing diverse demands placed on organizational leaders, Taylor University has integrated global engagement as one of the key focuses in the MBA Sports Management program. Sport is probably the most universal aspect of popular culture. It crosses languages and countries to captivate spectators and participants, as both a professional business and a pastime... Sport is so central to our contemporary moment s blend of transnational cultural industrialization and textualization that it does more than reflect the global - sport is big enough in its effects to modify our very use of the term, globalization. - Jim McKay, Globalization and Sport: Playing the World Internationalization of the sport industry has resulted in a demand for integration of international perspectives into the sport management higher education curriculum to produce graduates capable of working within this rapidly developing global 1 industry. 1 de Haan, Donna & Emma Sherry. Beyond just talking about global issues, every Taylor University MBA graduate completes a Global Study Tour. These 10-12 day tours accomplish many objectives, but the following four are at the core: 1 Experience and understand the culture of other countries through tours, cultural experiences, and interacting with host nationals. 2 Observe first-hand global organizations by meeting with organizational leaders and touring their facilities in order to learn how they develop and execute their strategy, manage their international organization, and deal with the complexities they face both at home and abroad. 3 Exposure to international sports venues and events, and using sports to share Christ. 4 Have some fun and build community with fellow students, guests and faculty. A unique aspect of the Taylor MBA global study tours is that adult guests are welcome. COST: The Global Study Tour cost is included in tuition and no additional fees are charged by the Taylor MBA. As part of tuition, the following items are included: airfare from US gateway, all ground transportation, lodging, most admissions fees, and most meals. Students may be responsible for some personal meals, entertainment and transportation during free time and souvenirs. WHEN: Global Study Tours for MBA Sports Management students take place the summer between year one and two of the program. Exact dates will be provided during the spring term of year one. Internationalisation of the Sport Management Curriculum: Acadmic and WHERE: TBD. Past trips include London, Hong Kong,, Costa Rica, Italy, and Germany. Student Reflections. Financial Aid Taylor University graduate students are eligible for the Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan Program. Graduate students can borrow up to the full cost of attendance (tuition and fees, international travel expense, books and materials, and other related expenses) through the Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan Program up to the maximum allowed amount of $20,500 per year. Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loans You are not required to demonstrate financial need to receive a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan. You will need to let the Financial Aid Office know how much you want to borrow, up to $20,500 per year. Interest accrues (accumulates) immediately upon the first disbursement of the Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan. You can pay the interest while you are in school and during grace periods and deferment or forbearance periods, or you can allow it to accrue and be capitalized (that is, added to the principal amount of your loan). If you choose not to pay the interest as it accrues, this will increase the total amount you have to repay because you will be charged interest on a higher principal amount. Additional loan types provided under the Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan Program include Direct GRAD PLUS Loans (for graduate and professional degree students) and Direct Consolidation Loans (to combine federal education loan debts into a single loan). For more information please visit: http://studentaid.ed.gov/types/loans The student must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.ed.gov, listing Taylor University Upland (001838) as a recipient of the data. The FAFSA must be completed each academic year (which covers July 1 through June 30 for federal financial aid purposes). The FAFSA should be completed two to three months before the student needs the loan funds. Upon receipt of the student s FAFSA data, Taylor University s Financial Aid Office will review the data and may request additional information if necessary. Once the file is complete, the Financial Aid Office will send an Award Letter identifying the student s loan eligibility and providing detailed instructions for completing the loan application process. Repayment of the loan principal is deferred until after graduation or until the student ceases to be enrolled at least half time. Students must also have an undergraduate degree to qualify for student loans at the graduate level. Questions?
