Solution Profile i-net Infrastructure

Executive Overview Traditionally, network infrastructures are built using unmanaged, Layer 2, Layer 2+ or Layer 3 network elements embedded in an architecture to offer basic connectivity for business applications. Over the years, complex business logic and processes have put pressure on communication infrastructures to deliver more that just basic connectivity; to offer more sophisticated functions such as traffic segregation, packet filtering, quality of service and security. Further sophistication in VLSI designing and ASIC technologies have bridged the gap between various network elements and have made infrastructure solution more cost effective yet more feature rich. Allied Telesyn goes a step further in this technological advancement to offer infrastructure solutions which we categorise as the i-net Infrastructure Solution. i-net is an end-to-end Layer 3 network with advanced functionality that ensures availability, manageability, security, adaptability and performance for today s most demanding businesses. Apar t from the standard advantage an end-to-end Layer 3 infrastructure brings over traditional networking elements, building such a solution using all Allied Telesyn elements offers network intelligence which is unparalleled in the industry. Allied Telesyn s i-net infrastructure elements KEY BENEFITS End-to-End Intelligence for Distributed Layer 3 Switching across the Network Basic Self-healing Functionality and Inherent Network Dynamism Time, Date, Weekday, Weekend and Event-based Network Sensitivity Built-in Email-based Networking Alerts & Notification Functions Multi-Layer Standards-base Protocol Support IPv4, IPv6**, IPX**, Appletalk**, DECNet** Availability Scheduling Optional Load Balancing Support ** Optional Upgrade for Stateful Firewall Inspection ** Web GUI-based Configuration, Management & Troubleshooting **Available only on Core/Distribution Equipment Page 1 i-net Infrastructure

enhance the end-to-end network awareness enabling the infrastructure to automatically tune itself based on change in factors like resource availability, network load, change to date, time, weekday or weekend. This solution cuts down the operational expenses to manage complex networks as well as increases business availability for today s mission critical processes. With unprecedented support for built-in event notification, the i-net infrastructure paves the way for future networks. Application Overview Allied Telesyn s i-net Infrastructure Solution architecture uses end-to-end Layer 3 components to deliver network intelligence increasing solution manageability, availability, adaptability and most of all security. Traditional Solutions Hierarchical network architecture are typically built using Layer 2/2+ switching elements at the access, Layer 2/3 elements at the distribution and typically, Layer 3 components at the core with Layer 2+ server farms. These solution logics were a cost-to-functionality trade-off. With the exponential drop in the prices of Layer 3 switching components, deploying networks with end-to-end Layer 3 technologies have become more viable. Building network infrastructures using all Layer 3 components enables distributed Layer 3 wire-speed switching which helps ensure that networking traffic does not traverse between switch elements just for Layer 3 switching thus enabling efficient use of inter-switch interlinks bandwidth and improving over-all network performance. Allied Telesyn Advantage Allied Telesyn i-net Infrastructure Solution goes beyond this standard advantage an end-to-end Layer 3 infrastructure holds to extend more value at no additional cost. Value Proposition Allied Telesyn Layer 3 network elements offer more inbuilt manageability and functionality apart from the standard while still conforming to all prevailing industry standards. Building networking infrastructures with Allied Telesyn Layer 3 components harness the inbuilt functionality of these components in tandem, to deliver value-added services in-line with today s stringent business application demands. Resource Availability-based Network Dynamism Typically, networking infrastructures are static setups with no intelligence to auto-tune or reconfigure itself based on any change in network conditions. i-net architecture extends your network the intelligence to re-route, re-prioritize, Page 3 i-net Infrastructure

re-optimize with dynamic changes in the availability of networking elements like change in equipment status, change in link status or even to the extent of availability or non-availability of a key computing element, be it a server or a power user. This network dynamism needs to be configured in the infrastructure elements based on the required logics and this intelligence stays with the infrastructure working dynamically thereafter. Building this logic on the i-net network infrastructure elements does not require any external software or hardware deployments or any advanced programming skill-sets. Network Sensitivity Another important function which the i-net infrastructure can extend to an organization is time, date, weekday, weekend or event-based network sensitivity. The entire network will have the intelligence to respond to any change in the above parameters to influence its functions; be it enhancing the security, or changing the traffic, QoS, filtering, policing patterns altogether without any manual intervention. Functions like controlling network access based on business hours, changing traffic policies with change in business applications usage over one transactional day, controlling corporate application access, activity scheduling and more, harness this inherent capability of Allied Telesyn s Layer 3 components, chaining them together to offer network sensitivity. Alerts & Notification Allied Telesyn s i-net infrastructure elements come with a built-in email client that can generate custom email alerts lest any abnormality arise on the network like change in interface status, CPU and memory utilisation, module failures or any set threshold is reached. This feature requires no network management tools to be deployed. Optional Load Balancing With bare minimum incremental cost, most of the i-net infrastructure components can be upgraded to support TCP Virtual Balancer, HTTP Virtual Balancer as well as SSL Load Balancer in software. Optional ICSA-certified Stateful Inspection Firewall Allied Telesyn s state-of-the-ar t Stateful Inspection Firewall is available as an optional upgrade for most of the i-net infrastructure components protecting sensitive corporate information by monitoring both packet content and session status. The firewall defends against a wide range of Denial of Service (DoS) attacks including Ping of Death, SYN/FIN flooding, Smurf attacks, por t scans, fragment attacks, and IP Spoofing both from internal as well as external threats. The firewall also triggers email alerts when such attacks are detected. With Allied Telesyn s Firewall Feature Set i-net Infrastructure Page 4

optional upgrade, the i-net infrastructure components can create a comprehensive security audit trail of event triggers, firewall event-logging, and accounting information. Web GUI-based Management The entire i-net infrastructure can be configured, managed, monitored and troubleshooting done, using the inbuilt web GUI interface engine embedded in each of the Layer 3 elements. This GUI is not an elementary GUI. Right from the extent of managing firmware, managing patches and licenses, to configuring por ts, trunks, mirrors, VLANs, Inter-VLANs routing, IP/IPX interfaces, RIP, OSPF, multicasting, filtering and policing; majority of the functions that are required for day to day operations and maintenance of the network infrastructure are available through the web GUI interface. About Allied Telesyn Allied Telesyn has been an innovator in the development and manufacturing of high-quality, low-cost networking solutions since 1987.
