````` Good Shepherd Lutheran Church School Preschool Welcome to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church We ask all worshipers to sign the Friendship Register, a maroon book at the end of the pew. If you need assistance of any kind, see an usher. Restrooms are located off the main church lobby. Hearing devices are available from the ushers. Audio versions of the service are available upon request. Please keep pews in the back of the church open for families with small children. Live video of the service is available in the room at the end of the hallway, where parents may calm a child and still hear and see the service. If you would like to know more about Good Shepherd, visit our website at www.gsdg.org. Believing that Holy Scripture teaches that Holy Communion is intended for those who are truly one in faith, this congregation practices close Communion. That is, we share the supper with those who have confessed their close oneness in faith with us by registering with one of our pastors before worship.
THE NINETEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST SEPTEMBER 28 TH & 29 TH 2013 The Savior s Message: Love Speaks With Urgency. Time is limited for each of us as well as for the ones we are called to love. With the Lord at our side, we can speak with the urgency of heart that an appreciation for human frailty brings us, knowing that God will bring in his elect, and he uses us to do that as time grows short. PRESERVICE MUSIC PERSONAL PRAYER UPON ENTERING GOD S HOUSE Hymn 559, Verse 1 Lord of the living harvest That ripens o er the plain, Where angels soon will gather Their sheaves of golden grain, Accept our hands to labor, Our hearts to trust and love, And be with us to hasten Your kingdom from above. CONFESSION OF SINS M: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.
C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt. M: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will. C: Amen. PRAYER AND PRAISE M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.
Let us pray. Mercifully grant, O God, that your Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts, for without your help we are unable to please you; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. FIRST LESSON Amos 6: 1 7 Amos warns us against becoming attached to worldly things that might make us spiritually complacent.
PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 146 Praise the LORD, O my soul.* I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. Do not put your trust in princes,* in mortal men, who cannot save. Blessed is he whose hope is in the LORD his God,* the maker of heaven and earth. Refrain The LORD gives food to the hungry,* the LORD sets prisoners free. The LORD gives sight to the blind,* the LORD lifts up those who are bowed down. The LORD watches over the outcast* and sustains the fatherless and the widow. The LORD remains faithful forever.* He upholds the cause of the oppressed. Glory be to the Father and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,* is now, and will be forever. VERSE OF THE DAY Hymn 457 Fight the Good Fight STAND GOSPEL LESSON Luke 16: 19 31 The story of the rich man and poor Lazarus is a powerful reminder that putting our trust in anything but Jesus for salvation will result in an eternity in hell.
After The Gospel Reading SERMON HYMN 560 I Hear the Savior Calling SERMON TEXT - 2 Timothy 4: 6 8, 16 18 For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them. But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was delivered from the lion s mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen. SERMON THEME Christ s Love, Our Calling: Love Speaks With Urgency STAND
After the Sermon We confess our faith using the word of the Te Deum. The Te Deum is an ancient and majestic canticle of the Christian church, a confession of faith, a mighty hymn of praise to God. Martin Luther loved the Te Deum and referred to it as a fine symbol or creed of the Christian faith.
