Abstract of thesis presented to the Senate of the Universiti Putra Malaysia in fulfilment of the requirement for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy EFFECTS OF COGNITIVE STRATEGY TRAINING ON MALAYSIAN TERTIARY LEARNERS LISTENING COMPREHENSION SKILLS IN THE INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE TESTING SYSTEM TEST (IELTS) Chairman: Nooreen Noordin, PhD Faculty: Educational Studies By KATRIN SHAMSHIRI November 2010 The purpose of this study was to look into the effects of cognitive and metacognitive explicit strategy instruction on 56 intermediate level Malaysian college students in listening comprehension. First, the subjects took a pre-test to be randomized in the control and experimental group. Second subjects completed a variety of IELTS listening tasks in 6 weeks. The experimental group received explicit instructions to employ cognitive-metacognitive strategies for 20 minutes every week, while the control group used strategies naturally while completing the tasks without receiving feedback and explicit instruction. Finally, subjects received a post-test. Based on the results of the study, the experimental group outperformed the control group in the post-test, which confirms the positive effects of strategy use and receiving teacher s feedback in previous studies. iii

The effects of task difficulty on using cognitive-metacognitive strategy in IELTS listening test revealed that the experimental group used more cognitivemetacognitive strategies for all difficult tasks, while the control group used these strategies for easier tasks or only slightly difficult tasks. In addition, the results supported the positive effects of cognitive-metacognitive strategy training on increasing social and affective strategies during the treatment phase which eventually contributed to the experimental group s better performance in the post-test. Lastly, it was found that while proficiency level may have affected the students performance, cognitive-metacognitive strategy use was found to have played a more significant role in improving the students listening comprehension. Finally, the observers protocol revealed factors such as motivation, personality type, and interaction among the subjects are likely to affect their performance in the listening tasks. Further research is recommended to address these factors and their effect on listening comprehension. iv

Abstrak tesis dikemukakan kepada senat Universiti Putra Malaysia bagi memenuhi keperluan ijazah Doktor Falsafah KESAN KAJIAN LATIHAN STRATEGI KOGNITIF TERHADAP KEFAHAMAN MENGENGAR IELTS PELAJAR UNIVERSITI DI MALAYSIA Oleh KATRIN SHAMSHIRI November 2010 Pengerusi: Nooreen Noordin, PhD Fakulti: Pengajian Pendidikan Kajian ini adalah untuk meneliti kesan pengajaran strategi kognitif dan metakognitif dalam pemahaman mendengar di kalangan 56 mahasiswa universiti peringkat pertengahan di Malaysia. Pertama, subjek mengambil ujian mendengar IELTS sebagai pra-ujian bagi menentukan kumpulan kawalan dan kumpulan eksperimen secara rawak. Kedua, selama jangka masa enam minggu, subjek didedahkan kepada pelbagai aktiviti mendengar IELTS. Bagi kumpulan eksperimen, subjek menerima pengajaran khusus dalam penggunaan strategi kognitif dan metakognitif selama 20 minit setiap minggu, manakala bagi kumpulan kawalan, subjek hanya melakukan tugas-tugas mereka tanpa menerima sebarang bentuk bimbingan. Subjek kemudiannya akan diuji dengan satu post-ujian. Keputusan daripada post-ujian mendapati kumpulan eksperimen v

menunjukkan keputusan yang lebih baik berbanding kumpulan kawalan, lantas mengukuhkan bukti wujudnya kesan positif dalam kajian yang lepas. Kesan bagi tahap kesukaran menggunakan strategi kognitif dan metakognitif dalam pemahamanan pendengaran juga dikaji. Setelah mendengar setiap tugasan, subjek membuat penilaian dari segi darjah kepayahan. Keputusan latihan ini menunjukkan bahawa kumpulan eksperimen umumnya cenderung menggunakan strategi kognitif dan metakognitif dalam menyiapkan tugas yang sukar, sementara kumpulan kawalan menggunakan strategi-strategi ini bagi tugasan mudah atau sukar pada peringkat tertentu sahaja. Kajian ini turut melibatkan pengujian kesan strategi latihan kognitif dan metakognitif terhadap memori, sosio, afektif, dan pampasan strategi. Keputusan menunjukkan terdapatnya kesan positif latihan strategi kognitif dan metakognitif dalam meningkatkan memori, kognitif, metakognitif dan pampasan yang mana menyumbang kepada pencapaian lebih baik kumpulan eksperimen dalan post-ujian berbanding kumpulan kawalan. Kesan kemahiran, dan latihan strategi terhadap pemahaman pendengaran juga telah diteliti untuk mengenalpasti faktor yang mempunyai lebih banyak sumbangan terhadap prestasi subjek yang lebih tinggi dalam post-ujian. Didapati walaupun tahap profisensi boleh mempengaruhi prestasi pelajar dalam tugas mendengar, faktor utama pencapaian tinggi mereka dalam tugas-tugas mendengar boleh dikaitkan dengan penggunaan strategi mereka selama vi

tempoh eksperimen. Latar belakang bukan penunjuk yang mantap bagi ujian pemahaman pendengaran. Selain penemuan di atas, catatan pemerhatian mendedahkan faktor-faktor seperti motivasi, jenis keperibadian, dan interaksi di antara subjek juga mungkin mempengaruhi prestasi mereka dalam pemahaman mendengar. Kajian lanjut adalah clicadangkan untuk menefiti kesan factor-faktor ini ketas pemahaman pendengaran. vii
