CARREL BOOKS SPRING 2017 1 DR. DAVID VASTOLA THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH Making Sense of Vitamins, Minerals, Supplements, and Herbs A guide to understanding and using important nutritional additives. There is ample scientific evidence suggesting that taking a daily multivitamin-and-mineral supplement is a sensible precaution to help avoid nutrient deficiencies. But making sense of sometimes confusing and contradictory information can be a challenge. In The Fountain of Youth, Dr. David Vastola demystifies the complicated world of vitamins, minerals, supplements, and herbs. Dr. Vastola s commonsense approach, combined with the science to back it up, explains what product labels do not. He makes clear that FDA, RDA, and directional use provided on bottles are not necessarily individually applicable. Since each person s physical makeup is unique, the author defragments nutrient information based on individual characteristics. Advance Reading Copies available Targeted promotion to public, academic, and school libraries Co-op available The author maintains that the term vitamin is a misnomer because when it comes to nutrient therapy, consumers must consider not only vitamins but minerals, trace elements, and herbal remedies. In The Fountain of Youth, Dr. Vastola provides fundamental information about how, when, and why all forms of supplements are so important. His book provides a guide not only to understanding these important nutritional additives but to using them appropriately as well. DR. DAVID VASTOLA has been practicing internal medicine and gastroenterology since 1973. He served as the chief of gastroenterology at Deaconess Hospital, Buffalo. At the University of Buffalo, he was an assistant clinical professor of medicine and taught for five years in the School of Medicine and Pharmacy. Dr. Vastola was elected to the University of Buffalo admissions committee and the National Medical Honor Society. He lives in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. $34.99 hardcover (Can. $53.99) World (W) CQ 32 ISBN 978-1-63144-027-4 6 x 9 204 pages Health ebook ISBN 978-1-63144-031-1 MARCH

CARREL BOOKS SPRING 2017 2 DANIEL FRIEDMAN THE KING OF CHICAGO Memories of My Father The life and times of a home kid. The King of Chicago is the story of a father-son relationship as real and hugely loving as that in Philip Roth s Patrimony. At its heart is a young son who tries furiously to heal his father from a violent childhood inside a Chicago orphanage. The orphanage, the Marks Nathan Home, still stands today on the West Side of Chicago, marked by a tarnished, barely legible plaque. Once home to 14,000 Jewish orphans, it is now just another barely remembered relic of a great city. Using original articles from the orphanage newspaper, Friedman attempts to reconstruct and understand his father s childhood, a time that his father never discussed. Expanding its reach, The King of Chicago becomes a multigenerational saga of Jewish life, moving from a mysterious little man named Kasiel, who arrived in the Port of Baltimore in 1903 with two dollars to his name, to the factory floor of a scrap paper business, a golf course where children played without knowing the rules, and a home on the North Shore among fellow immigrants looking for something better for their children. Advance Reading Copies available Targeted promotion to public, academic, and school libraries Co-op available At its core, this memoir is both a snapshot of immigrant life in Chicago in the early twentieth century and a poignant reminder about the need to never forget who you are and where you come from. DANIEL FRIEDMAN was born in Chicago, graduated from Oxford University, and taught writing at the University of Virginia. He founded Albemarle magazine, was founding editor of La Belle France, and is author of a travel memoir, My Mother s Side. His writing has been praised by the New York Times, Gourmet, and Money. He lives in Chicago, Illinois. $29.99 hardcover (Can. $46.99) World (W) CQ 30 ISBN 978-1-63144-068-7 5 ½ x 8 ¼ 140 pages 15 b/w photographs History ebook ISBN 978-1-63144-069-4 MAY

CARREL BOOKS SPRING 2017 3 LAWRENCE PATERSON HITLER S GRAY WOLVES U-Boats in the Indian Ocean Explore the little-known war of the Nazi U-boats in the Indian Ocean in WWII. Next to nothing has been written about the U-boat war in the Indian Ocean. This is the story of a forgotten campaign. The battle began in August 1943, when a German submarine arrived in the Malaysian harbor of Georgetown. In total, nearly forty U-boats were assigned to penetrate the Indian Ocean, serving alongside troops of the occupying Imperial Japanese forces. The Japanese allowed U-boats to use Malaysia as an operational station. From that base, they mixed with Japanese forces on a hitherto unseen scale: a move which spread the U-boat war throughout the vast Indian Ocean and into the Pacific. Success in this theater of war held a real chance to swing the tide of battle in North Africa in favor of Rommel, but the Germans essentially did too little too late. Advance Reading Copies available Targeted promotion to public, academic, and school libraries Co-op available $34.99 hardcover (Can. $53.99) North America (NA) CQ 30 ISBN 978-1-5107-1776-3 6 x 9 288 pages Military ebook ISBN 978-1-5107-1773-2 MAY The campaign also gave U-boats the opportunity to penetrate the Pacific Ocean for the first time, attacking shipping off the Australian coast and hunting off New Zealand. Plans were even discussed for an assault on American supply lines. The joint action also brought into stark relief the fundamental differences of German and Japanese war aims. After the crews of Italian supply submarines joined the Germans and Japanese, relations between the fighting men of the three main Axis powers were often brutal and almost constantly turbulent. Stories of U-boats laden with gold and treasure stem almost exclusively from boats destined to and returning from Japanese-controlled Malaysia, laden with material exchanged between the two major partners of the Triple Axis Alliance. LAWRENCE PATERSON has written eleven nonfiction histories of Germany s Second World War U-boat service, inspired largely by his lifelong interest in the Second World War and working as a scuba instructor, diving the wartime wrecks off France. When not writing, Lawrence tours with the heavy metal band Raven Lord as their drummer.

CARREL BOOKS SPRING 2017 4 FREDERICK V. ROMANO THE GOLDEN AGE OF BOXING ON RADIO AND TELEVISION A Blow-by-Blow History from 1921 to 1964 A comprehensive account of how boxing captured the imagination of the country through the airwaves. Radio and television broadcasting were as important to the growth and popularity of boxing as it was to the reshaping of our very culture. In The Golden Age of Boxing on Radio and Television, Frederick V. Romano explores the many roles that each medium played in both the development and the depiction of the sport. Principal among the topics covered are the ever-changing role of technology during the four-plusdecade period, how it impacted the manner in which the sport was presented to its public audience, the exponential growth of those audiences, and the influence radio and television had on the financial aspects of the sport, including the selective use of radio and television and the financial boom that the mediums created. Advance Reading Copies available Targeted promotion to public, academic, and school libraries Co-op available $40.00 hardcover (Can. $62.00) World (W) CQ 28 ISBN 978-1-63144-074-8 6 x 9 416 pages 25 b/w photographs ebook ISBN 978-1-63144-075-5 MAY The Golden Age of Boxing on Radio and Television also assays radio and boxing during World War II, the role of organized crime, and the monopolistic practices during the television era. Romano also presents a detailed account of announcers such as Don Dunphy and Ted Husing, who brought the action to the listeners and viewers, the many appearances that boxers including Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, and Rocky Marciano made on radio and television when they were not in the ring, and the mediums portrayal of the sport in an array of programming from drama to comedy. This is a must-have for all serious boxing fans. FREDERICK V. ROMANO is a boxing historian with more than thirty-five years of experience in the sport. He has served as a research consultant for HBO Boxing, produced and hosted a cable television show devoted to boxing, and acted as a certified amateur judge for matches throughout the New York area, including the prestigious Golden Gloves finals held annually in New York City. His first book, The Boxing Filmography, was published in 2004. He resides in Eastchester, New York.

CARREL BOOKS SPRING 2017 6 J. MICHAEL MARTINEZ POLITICAL ASSASSINATIONS AND ATTEMPTS THAT CHANGED US HISTORY The Lasting Effects of Violence against American Political Leaders The long, dark history of political violence in the United States. Violence has been employed to achieve political objectives throughout history. Taking the life of a perceived enemy is as old as mankind. While assassinations and assassination attempts are not unique to the American way of life, denizens of other nations sometimes look upon the United States as populated by reckless cowboys owing to a Wild West attitude about violence, especially episodes involving guns. In this book, J. Michael Martinez focuses on assassinations and attempts in the American republic. Nine American presidents Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, James A. Garfield, William McKinley, Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, and Ronald Reagan have been the targets of assassins. President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt was also a target shortly before he was sworn in in 1933. Moreover, three presidential candidates Theodore Roosevelt, Robert F. Kennedy, and George Wallace were shot by assailants. In addition to presidents and candidates for the presidency, eight governors, seven US senators, nine US House members, eleven mayors, seventeen state legislators, and eleven judges have been victims of political violence. Advance Reading Copies available Targeted promotion to public, academic, and school libraries Co-op available $34.99 hardcover (Can. $53.99) World (W) CQ 30 ISBN 978-1-63144-070-0 6 x 9 320 pages 25 b/w illustrations History ebook ISBN 978-1-63144-071-7 AUGUST Not all political assassinations involve elected officials. Some of those targeted, such as Joseph Smith, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr., were public figures who influenced political issues. But their cases are instructive because of their connection to, and influence on, the political process. Why has the United States a country constructed on a bedrock of the rule of law and firmly committed to due process been so susceptible to political violence? Martinez addresses this and other important questions as he examines twenty-five instances of violence against elected officials and public figures in American history. J. MICHAEL MARTINEZ is an attorney and author of numerous articles and five books, including The Safety of the Kingdom: Government Responses to Subversive Threats. He lives in Monroe, Georgia.
