We hope that it will be a helpful tool for those who prepare parish liturgies and a handy resource for parish worship commissions as they discuss long-range plans. You may want to be familiar with chapters seven and eight in the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (2002). Paragraphs nos. 352-385 will assist you as you choose a Mass and its parts. DAYS OF SPECIAL INTEREST Solemnity, Immaculate Conception of the Blessed irgin Mary... Saturday, December 8, 2012 This is a Holy Day of obligation in the United States. Since it is our country's patronal feast, it never falls under the "Monday/Saturday ruling", and the obligation to participate in Mass is never abrogated. That ruling only applies to January 1 (Mary Mother of God), August 15 (Assumption), and November 1 (All Saints). The 2 nd Sunday of Advent Mass is celebrated after 4:00 p.m., December 8. Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord... Tuesday, December 25, 2012 Texts for Mass after 4:00 p.m. on Monday will properly be chosen from the Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord - the igil Mass. Texts for the igil Mass will be used either before or after First espers. The Roman Missal contains prayers for three Mass on the Nativity: At the Mass during the Night, At the Mass at Dawn and at the Mass during the Day. See pages 35-38 in the Catholic Book Publishing (CBP) Roman Missal. The creche is to be displayed outside the sanctuary; it may be blessed at the igil Mass or at another suitable time with the appropriate texts from the Book of Blessings (BB Chapter 48, 1543). Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord... Sunday, May 12, 2013 In the dioceses of Michigan and Ohio, the Solemnity of the Ascension is celebrated on the Seventh Sunday of Easter. Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed irgin Mary.. Thursday, August 15, 2013 Holy Day with obligation to attend Mass. A igil Mass may be celebrated after 4 p.m. on Wednesday, August 14 to fulfill the obligation. Anniversary of the Dedication of the Cathedral... Sunday, October 20, 2013 The dedication of the Cathedral of Saint Joseph is celebrated on Sunday, October 20, 2013. The anniversary of the dedication of the Cathedral is usually celebrated with the rank of a solemnity in the Cathedral itself, and with the rank of feast in the other churches of the Diocese. Mass celebrated in the Cathedral will use the prayers from the Common of the Dedication of a Church: In the Church that was Dedicated. See pages 887-890 CBP Roman Missal. The readings may be found in the Lectionary, nos. 701-706. The dedication of the Cathedral is normally observed as a feast outside of the Cathedral, because it falls on a Sunday this year the celebration of the 29 th Sunday in Ordinary Time takes precedence to the diocesan parishes. Solemnity, All Saints Friday, November 1, 2013 Holy Day with obligation to attend Mass. A Mass may be celebrated after 4 p.m. on Thursday, October 31 to fulfill the obligation. Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls Day)...Saturday, November 2, 2013 Any priest may celebrate three Masses on this day. See pages 841-843 CBP Roman Missal. RITUAL MASSES Choice of Day for the Rite of Marriage Whenever marriage is celebrated during Mass, white vestments are worn and the wedding Mass is used. If the wedding is celebrated on a Sunday or solemnity, the Mass of the day is used with the nuptial blessing and where appropriate the special final blessing. While weddings are not prohibited during Advent and Lent, by their very nature these seasons do not lend themselves to weddings. Therefore, clergy should do their best to avoid scheduling weddings during these seasons. Clergy officiating at weddings during these seasons should do whatever is necessary to respect the particular season. When a wedding is celebrated during Advent or Lent, the tone of the season must not be suppressed, and the parish s seasonal environment should not be replaced or modified. In addition, while not forbidden, it is preferable that weddings not occur on Sundays or major feast days which have their own proper focus. Therefore, clergy are asked to discourage weddings after 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays, all day on Sundays, and all day on holy days of obligation. When weddings do occur on these days, the prayers and readings of the day are to be used. The ritual does allow the use of one reading from the wedding lectionary. Funerals The funeral Mass is not permitted on solemnities of obligation, the Easter Triduum, and on the Sundays of Advent, Lent, and the Easter season (Order of Christian Funerals, no. 178). The funeral liturgy outside Mass may be used on these days. The Choice of the Mass and Its Parts The pastoral effectiveness of a celebration will be greatly increased if the texts of the readings, the prayers and the liturgical chants correspond as aptly as possible to the needs, the preparation, and the culture of the participants. This will be achieved by appropriate use of the many possibilities of choice described below. Hence, in arranging the celebration of Mass, the priest should be attentive rather to the common spiritual good of the People of God rather than to his own inclinations. He should also remember that choices of this kind are to be made in harmony with those who exercise some part in the celebration, including the faithful, as regard the parts that more directly pertain to them. Since, indeed, many possibilities are provided for choosing the different parts of the Mass, it is necessary for the deacon, the readers, the psalmist, the cantor, the commentator, and the choir to know properly before the celebration the texts that concern each and that are to be used, and it is necessary that nothing be in any sense improvised. The harmonious ordering and carrying out of the rites will greatly help in disposing the faithful for participation in the Eucharist. SCRUTINIES In parishes where there are people preparing to receive the Sacrament of Baptism during the Easter igil, the Scrutinies are celebrated on the 3 rd, 4 th and 5 th Sundays of Lent. See pages 969-972 of the CBP Roman Missal for proper prayers and inserts to Eucharistic Prayers I (Roman Canon), II and III.

Proper Obligatory Memorials, namely: a) The Memorial of a secondary Patron of the place, diocese, region or religious province. b) Other Obligatory Memorials inscribed in the Calendar of each diocese, or Order or Congregation. 12. Optional Memorials, which, however, may be celebrated, in the special manner described in the General Instruction of the Roman Missal and of the Liturgy of the Hours, even on the days listed in no. 9. In the same manner Obligatory memorials may be celebrated as Optional Memorials if they happen to fall on Lenten weekdays. 13. Weekdays of Advent up to and including December 16. Weekdays of Christmas Time from January 2 until the Saturday after the Epiphany. Weekdays of the Easter Time from Monday after he Octave of Easter up to and including the Saturday before Pentecost.
