Cisco EnergyWise and CA ecosoftware: Deliver Energy Optimization for the Data Center Executive Summary Managing energy consumption and power loads in the data center, as part of Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM), and in other commercial facilities has become a business imperative from an operational, financial, and service assurance perspective. However, organizations struggle to get a detailed view of their real-time energy consumption profile and to architect energy efficiency into their IT, data center, and facilities infrastructure. Measuring and monitoring consumption at a meaningful level of granularity while identifying opportunities to use Cisco EnergyWise to intelligently reduce consumption is the foundation to a successful and scalable power, energy, and carbon management strategy. Cisco has partnered with CA Technologies to provide enterprise-class energy-efficiency services promoted by Cisco Energywise and CA ecosoftware. Building on the CA ecosoftware support for Cisco UCS and Cisco EnergyWise, this partnership provides customers with an end-to-end energy view across their networked IT and data center assets. This allows customers to monitor and prioritize the utilization and renewal of those assets through the capture and management of power loads, energy cost, and consumption in the data center by device or by IT service. Solution Description CA ecosoftware and Cisco EnergyWise utilize agile networks to provide a data center solution that combines energy-efficient hardware, enterprise power, energy, and carbon management software and subject matter expertise and services. The solution offers: Increased service availability and better maintained uptime as a result of better automated management of power and temperature related outages Financial transparency of power demand and energy consumption in the data center and across the IT network, providing granularity by device or by service Optimization of existing devices and improved utilization of existing power capacity Energy and power management solutions that focus on the impact of IT as well as facilities Integration with facilities energy and power management that delivers real-time impact analysis of an entire company estate - networks, IT services, and facilities Profiles of energy, power, and carbon across the network to the entire IT and facilities estate Enterprise management and control of energy, power, and carbon costs including integration, metering, monitoring, data analysis, intelligent alerting, control, and comprehensive reporting Real-time dashboards of usage and impact with detail that can show a specific campus and yet has the granularity to view a service 2012 Cisco CA. Many existing solutions focus on single sites and need to be aggregated from multiple vendors for an enterprise view. The CA ecosoftware and Cisco EnergyWise solution is built on a proven, scalable, and extensible enterprise network management solution specifically tailored to bridge IT and facilities devices to deliver enterprise energy management. This agile and transformative energy network provides relevant and timely power and energy management information. The solution delivers access to information that would previously have been aggregated manually. Its combination of solutions provides customers with a way of prioritizing projects and investments based on legislative requirements and business remits. In a world that is vastly heterogeneous, CA ecosoftware and Cisco EnergyWise are working to simplify governance, investment, and management to provide timely information to make evidence-based decisions. Figure 1 shows CA ecosoftware integration in a data center architecture. Figure 1: CA ecosoftware in the Data Center Customer Problems Addressed As data center reliability and efficiency become more important with the advent of cloud computing and virtualization, organizations will require access to the energy data points needed to make intelligent decisions. In the U.S. alone, energy consumption by servers and data centers will reach more than 100 billion kwh and cost businesses roughly $7.4 billion annually by 2012. With the reality of rising energy costs and constraints on power demand, organizations require a clear roadmap to reduce consumption and load, and the associated cost to the business. A prerequisite to any successful corporate energy reduction and power management plan is the visibility at a granular level of where that consumption is occurring over time. By identifying cost per service as well as cost per device an organization can correctly provision the appropriate infrastructure to ensure the greatest ROI on their service delivery and reduction efforts. Automating the capture and management of this information will also streamline the efforts and costs associated with reporting on legislated environmental mandates. As the market demands more from organizations in terms of corporate responsibility, environmental regulation, and sustainability leadership, this combination of a clear strategy, measureable results, and transparency will allow any organization to successfully exceed their customer s expectations and overcome the competitive pressures in the sustainability arena. 2012 Cisco CA.
