The Secret Garden Scene 1 Indian Market Opening the scene with Indian Music and line sequence, moving into Market scene. Various Food seller lines Soldier 1: We must do something! Soldier 2: But what can we do? The disease has already spread too far. Soldier 1: What about all of the innocent families? Solder 2: It s too late to save them now. Narrator: The disease spread throughout India. All: Cholera x4 Scene 2 Mother s Bedroom Mother: What s the matter Mary darling? You re such an unhappy child. Mary: I ve got no-one to play with, I hate India and I hate this house! Father: I m sorry you feel like that darling, but there are lots of children for you to play with. Mary: I don t want to play with them; I want to be by myself! Both: Be careful what you wish for. We re off to the party now, bye. Mary trashes her mother s room Mary: My mother s elephant! Narrator: Mary, tried to cry but no tears fell, her parents caught cholera and died. She was to go on a long journey overseas to live with her uncle, Lord Craven in his estate in Yorkshire. Scene 3 Train Station/Coach Mrs Medlock: Now come along Mary, I m sorry I was late but I do have a house to run. Mary: I was waiting for 8 hours! The other children were mean to me, they re called me names and sang Mary Mary quite contrary. Mrs Medlock: Well, you are a strange girl, come on now don t dawdle. It s a long way to Misslethwaite Manor. Gets in coach and all the children emulate travelling Mary: Are we there yet? Mrs M: No
Pause Mary: Are we there YET? Mrs M: NO! Pause Mary: Are we there yet? Mrs M: Yes, actually we are are. They get out of the coach and Mary looks at the big house in amazement. Mary: Wow! It s the biggest house I ve ever seen. Goes into house outside Mary s bedroom Mrs M: Yes, yes it is quite large, now come along Miss Mary it s been a long journey and you need your sleep. Don t expect to see your uncle anytime soon he s gone to London and will be away for a while. No there are 65 rooms in this house but this is the only one you re allowed in. This is your room. Scene 4 Mary s Bedroom Martha: Is she here yet, is she here yet? Mary: Are you my servant? Mrs M: I don t know what you re used to in India but we do things differently here. Now get you to bed! Narrator: Mary felt very strange in this house, she didn t sleep well and heard strange. Dream sequence.. noises, sounds etc. Mary: MUM.DAD. NO! Morning Martha Enters Martha: Morning Mistress Mary, I ve got your breakfast for you. Mary: I don t want anything! Martha: Oh come on now, you ve got to go out and play in the gardens today. Mary: Well..get me dressed then! Martha: Can t you dress yourself? Mary: No! My servants always did it for me.
Martha: You are strange Mistress Mary. (Goes to Wardrobe) Well then, let s see, there s black and black. (jokes) Mary: They re both black, can t you see? Mary puts her arms up for Martha to dress her, Martha tickles mary. Mary: What do you think you re doing? Martha: I m tickling you, I thought all little girls likes being tickled? Mary: Well I don t so stop it! Martha: You are strange Miss Mary, C mon now, outside you go. Scene 5 Gardens Children open scene with garden growing along to music. Move back into locked garden position with the Old Gardener tending his plants. Mary: Oh no, not another stupid garden Hey you! (to Gardener) Gardener: Yes, my lady? Mary: What s behind there? Gardener: Oh nothing, there s nothing behind there. I ve been tending these gardens for 25 years and I ve never seen nothing behind this hedge. Mary: You re lying! I can see something hidden behind there. Gardener: Nothing you should concern yourself with Miss. (He grumbles to himself as he blocks her view.) Enter Dickon, hiding behind the hedges. He laughs. Mary: Hey you! What are you doing there? Dickon: Follow me, I know someone who knows the way in there. Mary: Show me! He whistle and a Robin lands on his finger Dickon: I said I know someone, not myself. (indicates to the bird) Mary: How can that bird tell us the way? He can t talk. Dickon: He talks to me! Quick there he goes, let s follow him. They follow the bird round to the hedge row. They find a locked door. Mary: Here s a door, it s locked. There must be a key, I ll find it and come back tomorrow.
Dickon: You are funny Mistress Mary. Mary: How do you know my name? Dickon: My sister Martha works at the big house. Mary: You must be Dickon. Martha says you can speak to the animals. Dickon: That I can.well I ll see you tomorrow. Scene 6 Secret Passage / Aunt s Bedroom Narration: Mary: I ve never seen this door before 1: Mary crept into a secret passage way. 2. Darkness fell all around her but she wasn t scared 3. She knew there must be something amazing on the other side. 4. Her curiosity spurred her on 5. Until she reached another door 6. She slowly pushed it open and found what must have been her Aunt s bedroom. 7: She saw an old vintage dressing table with a beautiful jewellery box on it. She was drawn to the object. She opened it. Mary: A key! It must be for the garden. Scene 7 Colin s Bedroom. Mary hears crying in the corridor, she finds Colin s room. Narration: Mary heard crying in the corridor, she followed the noise and came to another room. Mary: Why are you crying? Colin: I m not crying! Who are you? What are you doing in my house? Mary: It s my house! I live here too. Colin: Well, Lord Craven is my father and while he s away I m the master of this house so you have to do as I say! Mary: What s wrong with you? Colin: My legs don t work, I m going to get a lump in my back like my father and die!
Mary: That s ridiculous, there s nothing wrong with you. Let me have a look. (She goes to him). Nonsense, there s nothing wrong with you. It s all in your head. I know what you need, some light. (She opens the curtains) Colin shields his eyes from the light. Colin: If you open the window I ll die, it s the spores. Mary: If we are going to be cousins then I won t have that attitude. Have you never been outside? Colin: No, my father won t let me go outside. Since my mother died he said it s too dangerous. He doesn t want to lose me as well. That s why I stay in here. Mary: Well, I don t believe that! Tomorrow you are going to come outside with me, there s something I want to show you. Scene 8 The Secret Garden. Mary: No one has been here for years. This Garden is unloved. Colin: I know how it feels. Dickon: Look! The garden is growing! Colin: Thank you for showing me this Mary, it s wonderful. I m going to come back to tomorrow and the next day and the next! Colin tries to walk the others encourage him. Narration: 1: Life was perfect, they planted seeds the garden grow and Colin got stronger. 2. Children who had been alone finally had friends. 3. But there was one person missing, Colin desperately wanted to see his father. 4. And Mary desperately wanted to see her uncle. 5. So the decided to have a big camp fire and beckon Lord Craven home with black magic. Camp fire song Fire, fire burning bright. Bring Lord Craven home tonight. (Repeat x3) BLACKOUT Narration: Meanwhile in London, Lord Craven had a dream that his wife was in the Garden and she was calling him, telling him that he had to come home. Scene 9 Reunited Mrs M: My Lord! We didn t expect you back so soon! Would you like some tea? Craven: Never mind that Medlock, where is my son?
Mrs M: Well he s in his room of course, where else should he be sir? Martha steps forward and stops them Martha: He s not in his room sir! He s in the Garden! Craven: What do you mean he s in the Garden? Martha: That s where you ll find him sir. Craven: Take me to this Garden! Medlock I can t believe you ve been so irresponsible to let him outside. Mrs M: Sorry sir, I ll resign at once! Scene 10 The Secret Garden The Children are playing blind man s buff. Colin bumps into his father. Colin: Father! You re home, the spell worked! Craven: My son! You are well and walking! Colin: Yes father, it s because of Mary and the magic of my mother s garden. Mary breaks down crying on her knees. Mary: It s all my fault, I didn t mean to, I opened the garden and I planted seeds and now it s alive again. Please don t be angry. Craven: Angry? You brought life back to this garden and my family. Thank you Mary! (They embrace) Narration: From that moment on the garden was always open and Mary had the family she had always wished for. The garden grew and so did their love, never to be lost again. THE END
