GPS Safety Summary Benzenesulfonic acid, C 10-13 -alkyl derivatives, sodium salts Chemical Identity Name: Benzenesulfonic acid, C 10-13 -alkyl derivs., sodium salts CAS number: 68411-30-3 Molecular formula: C 16-19 H 25-31 NaO 3 S IUPAC name: C10-13 Alkylbenzene sulfonic acid, sodium salt BASF brand names: LAS (Linear alkylbenzene sulfonates) C 10-13, Na Maranil Paste A55 Structure: Product Uses Linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) is manufactured from linear alkylbenzene (LAB) in selfcontained, enclosed systems and is primarily used as a detergent surfactant and for processing and formulation in industrial settings. LAS is further used in light-duty liquid dishwashing compounds, heavy-duty liquid and powder laundry detergents, all-purpose cleaners and industrial cleaners as well as in personal care products. 1

Benefits LAS excels by having a good detergent, emulsifying, dispersing, wetting and foaming power. It is very stable in hard water as well as in slightly acidic and alkaline media. It can be well combined with other nonionic and anionic detergent bases. Health Information Human Health Safety Assessment Note: The information contained in the table below may be useful to someone handling the concentrated substance such as a manufacturer or transporter. Consumers are not likely to come in contact with the concentrated substance. The data, while verifiable, are not intended to be comprehensive nor replace the data found in the (M)SDS. Effect Assessment Acute Toxicity Irritation Sensitization Mutagenicity Carcinogenicity Toxicity after repeated exposure Toxicity for reproduction Result Of moderate toxicity after single ingestion. Virtually nontoxic after short-term skin contact. Inhalation is no likely route of exposure. Skin contact causes irritation. Eye contact causes serious damage. Skin sensitizing effects were not observed in animal studies. The substance was not mutagenic in bacteria, in mammalian cell culture and in studies with mammals. In long-term studies in rats in which the substance was given by feed, a carcinogenic effect was not observed. Repeated oral uptake of the substance did not cause substance-related effects. The results of animal studies gave no indication of a fertility impairing effect. Animal studies gave no indication of a developmental toxic effect at doses that were not toxic to the parental animals. 2

Environmental Information Environment Safety Assessment Note: The information in this chapter is intended to provide brief and general information of this substance s environmental impact. The results in the table below refer to testing performed with the concentrated substance. The data contained in this section explain the relative effect of the concentrated substance on the environment, as defined by certain tests. Effect Assessment Aquatic Toxicity Persistence and degradability Bioaccumulation potential Result Acutely toxic for aquatic organisms. Harmful with long lasting effects to aquatic life. Readily biodegradable. Accumulation in organisms is not to be expected. Physical/Chemical Properties Phys/Chem Safety Assessment Linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) C 10-13 Na is the sodium salt of linear alkylbenzene sulfonic acid with alkyl carbon chain lengths ranging from C 10 to C 13. The substance does not have flammable or explosive properties. The substance is very good soluble in water. Note: The results in the table below refer to testing performed with the concentrated substance. It is not intended to be comprehensive or to replace information found in the (M)SDS. Property Value Physical state Solid Melting / freezing point 198.5 C Boiling point Decomposition onset at 444 C Flash point Not relevant for solids. Flammability Non flammable. Explosive properties Non explosive. Self-ignition temperature Not required as preliminary results exclude self-heating up to 400 C 3

Exposure Potential Workplace exposure: The potential for workplace exposure is limited and infrequent. The low vapor pressure of LAS and the controls used in its manufacture limit its emission to air. Any wastes or spills generated during manufacture are collected and incinerated or placed in landfills. Worker exposure is controlled through engineering controls and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). No oral exposure from workers is expected from these uses. Though workers are required to use standard PPE, there is potential for dermal exposure. Therefore, each manufacturing facility should have a thorough training program for employees and appropriate work processes, as well as safety equipment in place to limit unnecessary exposure. Safety showers and eye-wash stations should be accessible nearby. Workers should follow the recommended safety measures in the extended Safety Data Sheet (esds). Consumer exposure: Consumers may be exposed to LAS in household laundry and cleaning products but it raises no safety concerns for the consumers, since only small amounts of LAS are contained in washing and cleaning products and in personal care products. Nevertheless, consumers should always read product information before use and follow the label/use instructions. Environmental exposure: Benzenesulfonic acid, C 10-13 -alkyl derivs., sodium salts is readily biodegradable and will therefore be degraded within the wastewater treatment process. Though the substance is considered to be acutely toxic and chronically harmful to aquatic organisms, a risk for the environment is not identified since exposure of surface waters is expected to be negligible due to the rapid degradation. Further, Benzenesulfonic acid, C 10-13 -alkyl derivs., sodium salts does not accumulate in the food chain. Nevertheless, an exposure assessment was performed for the identified uses and resulted in releases that do not pose a risk for aquatic life. Conclusively, all identified uses are safe for the environment based on the scientific facts summarized above and when carried out in compliance with recommended risk management measures and applicable regulations. Recommended Handling Measures The recommended safety measures generally apply in contact with the concentrated substance. It is NOT intended to replace the comprehensive guidance found in the (M)SDS, only supplement it. Please refer to the (M)SDS for specific safety and first aid measures. 4

When using concentrated chemicals always make sure that there is adequate ventilation. Always use appropriate chemical resistant gloves to protect your hands and skin and always wear eye protection such as chemical goggles. Do not eat, drink, or smoke where chemicals are handled, processed, or stored. Wash hands and skin following contact. If the substance gets into your eyes, rinse eyes thoroughly for at least 15 minutes with tap water and seek medical attention. For specific advice please consult the corresponding (Material) Safety Data Sheet of the substance. All effluent releases that may include the substance must be directed to a (municipal) waste water treatment plant that removes the substance from the final releases to the receiving water. Regulatory Information / Classification and Labeling Under GHS substances are classified according to their physical, health, and environmental hazards. The hazards are communicated via specific labels and the (M)SDS. GHS attempts to standardize hazard communication so that the intended audience (workers, consumers, transport workers, and emergency responders) can better understand the hazards of the chemicals in use. Note: The hazard statements and symbols presented here refer to the hazard properties of the concentrated substance and are meant to provide a brief overview of the substance s labeling. It is not intended to be comprehensive or to replace information found in the (M)SDS. Labeling according to UN GHS UN GHS is the basis for country specific GHS labeling Signal word: Danger Hazard statements: H302: Harmful if swallowed. H315: Causes skin irritation. H318: Causes serious eye damage. H401: Toxic to aquatic life. H412: Harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects 5
