Advantages and Barriers of CALL Abdulaziz Assanosi

Objectives Identify advantages of using CALL. Deal with difficulties in using CALL ٢ Assanosi

Introduction You have identified many common benefits of using CALL????? ٣ Assanosi

Advantages of CALL Experiential Learning: Internet helps student to acquire more information. Students can learn by doing things themselves. Become the creators not just the receivers of knowledge. Develop thinking skills and choose what to explore. ٤ Assanosi

Advantages of CALL Motivation: Computers are most popular among students ( games, fashionable.) Student motivation is therefore increased, especially whenever a variety of activities are offered, which make them feel more independent. ٥ Assanosi

Advantages of CALL Enhanced Student Achievement: CALL help students strengthen their linguistic skills by : Affecting their learning attitude. Helping them build self-instruction strategies and promote their self-confidence. ٦ Assanosi

Advantages of CALL Authentic Materials for Study: All students can use various resources of authentic reading materials either at school or from their home. ٧ Assanosi

Advantages of CALL Flexibility: Studying materials and activities can be accessed 24/7. Ranges of devices can be used to access these materials. The advance of technology enhanced this. ٨ Assanosi

Advantages of CALL Greater Interaction: Random access to Web pages breaks the linear flow of instruction. By sending E-mail and joining newsgroups, EFL students can communicate with new people. They can also interact with their own classmates. (forums and Chats) ٩ Assanosi

Advantages of Call Individualization: Shy or inhibited students can be greatly benefited CALL. They can interact with computer and online. They may get accustomed to social interaction by using CALL. ١٠ Assanosi

Advantages of CALL Independence from single source Students can still use books. They have the option to use internet for more or similar information. They can use local data (in their computers) ١١ Assanosi

Advantages of CALL Global Understanding: A foreign language is studied in a cultural context. With internet students can access the web and become citizens of a global classroom. CALL is not only about local institutions. ١٢ Assanosi

Checkpoint Why students are motivated to use computers for learning? How can computers enhance students achievement? How can shy students benefit from CALL? Mention other two advantages of CALL. ١٣ Assanosi

Barriers of CALL Barriers of CALL can be classified into two ways. They can be classified according to the entity influenced or according to their types. ١٤ Assanosi

School Teacher Students Financial Financial Financial Administrative intellectual intellectual Barrier of CALL, Psychological psychological affected ١٥ Assanosi

Barriers of CALL Financial barriers are the most common. Computers and their accessories are not available to every one. Although internet is a must nowadays, it remains costly. Knowledge about computer and acceptance of it is a problem for human constituent of CALL process (teacher, students) ١٦ Assanosi

Barriers of CALL (Type) Financial Intellectual Psychological ١٧ Assanosi

Financial Barriers Include the cost of hardware, software, maintenance (particular of the most advanced equipment), and extend to some staff development. This is true for schools (institutions), teachers, and students). There are some questions to be answered before budgeting CALL. ١٨ Assanosi

Financial Barriers Will a CALL program give the same output (students achievement)? The same = cost-ineffective Higher = cost-effective. Does a CALL program consume the same time to present higher results? The same = cost-ineffective Shorter = cost-effective. ١٩ Assanosi

Financial Barriers Different Opinions: CALL increases the cost and not replace the teacher. It is necessary, no matter the cost! Low usages at institution causes the cost barriers. Not very helpful for teacher, extra work needed. ٢٠ Assanosi

Availability of Computer Hardware and Software Availability of high quality software is a problem. Programmers either expensive or not educators. Most used programs are intended for other sectors therefore, suffer shortcomings in classroom. ٢١ Assanosi

Availability of Computer Hardware and Software Sufficient hardware in schools is a big, partly a financial challenge. Compatibility goes on to be a significant problem. Choosing hardware is difficult.(systems, equipment, and the rapid changes ) ٢٢ Assanosi

Checkpoint What are the main barriers of CALL? When do a CALL program become costeffective? Discuss the different opinions about financial barriers to CALL. What is the problem with hardware of CALL? ٢٣ Assanosi

Technical and theoretical Knowledge A lack of technical knowledge is a problem. Theoretical knowledge and technical knowledge. Not only in developing software, many instructors don t have enough knowledge using CALL. Integrating CALL into teaching plan is also a problem. ٢٤ Assanosi

Technical and theoretical Knowledge Also there are many students who lack the sufficient knowledge to use CALL. Improper knowledge affects using CALL as required. Designing CALL software without theoretical or technical results may produce poor results. ٢٥ Assanosi

Acceptance of Technologies Psychological barriers include Acceptance of technology and technophobia. There is a natural trend to resist change. This may be in level of administrators, older generations of instructors, and some young teachers. Wrong conceptions about computers threaten CALL. ٢٦ Assanosi

Technophobia The fear or dislike of advanced technology or complex devices, especially computers. It has many forms (examples). Occur in all CALL levels. A challenge to use CALL software. ٢٧ Assanosi

Terminus What is the result of designing CALL software without theoretical or technical knowledge? What is technophobia? ٢٨ Assanosi

Conclusion There are many advantages of CALL. Cost-effectiveness should be calculated before starting a CALL program. Many barriers also exist. CALL cannot replace teachers. Coming generation of students and teacher may benefit more from CALL. ٢٩ Assanosi
