INTRODUCTION Edward W. Dolch made a list of 220 words (service words). These words include adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, prepositions, pronouns, and verbs. Most of these words you can not find pictures for so they need to be learned. They are found in children s books and what we read in daily life. These words are known as High Frequency Words or Sight Words. There are five levels of words but you can use them at any age level. It is important for a child to practice over and over again until the words are learned. Contents: The resources in this book can be used in the following ways: Dolch Word List: This is for your own use to know which words are in that grade level. 3x5 Cards: These can be given to the child to learn the words. Smaller and Larger Word Lists: Test the knowledge of a child using the different sized word lists. The smaller lists can be cut and used separately or used as one page. (The child can use these word lists too.) Flash Cards/Word Wall Words Directions: Print and cut the words out. (Laminate.) Place in sealable plastic bags and label each level. Option 1: Choose the cards you would like your child (or student) to practice. You (or a child that is at a higher reading level) can hold each card up for the child. Have the child say (and spell) the word out loud. Shuffle the cards and repeat. Option 2: Have the child make different sentences using these words (and other words not available in this book) alone or with someone else. Option 3: You can put these on a word wall. (Enlarge if you desire.) 2

Games Directions: Make two copies of level of words. (See the Flash Cards Directions.) Concentration Lay out all the cards (the words the child is working on) face down. Turn two cards over and try to find a match. If the cards match, have the child say (and spell) the word and place the matching card on top of the other matching card. If the child does not make a match, turn the cards back over. Repeat the process until all of the cards have matching pairs. Go Fish Play this with two or more players. Use the words that you are working on (choose about 50 words). Deal five cards (face down) to each player. Place the rest of the cards in a draw pile (face down). Have the players remove of the matching cards and place them face up so everyone can see them. Have one person start the game. Have that person choose a word that he/she has in his hands and ask another person, Do you have the word... (say the word-younger children can spell the word or you can help them way the word)? If the person that was asked has the card, he/she hands it to the person that asked for that word. If the person that was asked did not have that word, say, Go Fish! and take a card from the draw pile. If he/she had the word that was asked, that person will get another turn. If he/she does not have that word, the next player goes next. If anyone runs out of cards, he/she can take a card from the draw pile. Repeat the game until all the words have been found. The player with the most matching sets of words wins the game. 3
