Ильюшин Ил-20, 22, 24, 38 Ilyushin IL-20, 22, 24, 38 IL-20/20M 20 IL-22/22M 35 IL-20RT 4 IL-24N 2 58 M 2 Patrol electronic reconnaissance/intelligence aircraft with ELINT systems: SLAR phased array Игла-1 [Needle] in under-fuselage pod, Квадрат-2 [Square], Ромб-4 [Rhomb], Вишна [Cheery-tree] and two photo-cameras A-87P. First prototype (converted IL-18D) fly in March 1968 (pilot Stanislav Bliznyuk), serial aircraft in service since 12.1968 (Soviet Navy Aviation, later Russian Navy Aviation). 20 aircraft were built between 1968 and 1976. At last 4 of them were produced as IL-20M with upgraded equipment. Crew of the IL-20M: 13 airmen, incl. 8 operators of the ELINT equipment. Airborne commanding post. Two basic variants IL-22 Бизон [Bison] and IL-22M Зебра [Zebra] and few specialized aircrafts. 13 IL-22 Bison (type 36) built between 1976 and 1979 and 22 IL-22M-11 Zebra (type 40) between 1982 and 1986. All were converted IL-18Ds. All carry designation IL-18 as type on the nose of the fuselage. Used by Soviet Aviation, Aeroflot, Russian Air Force, after 1991 few by Ukraine, Kazakhstan and civil airlines. After years of service some have been reconverted to IL-18s. Airborne measuring point (СИП, Самолётный Измерительний Пункт [SIP]; RT for Радиотелеметрический Систем [Telemetric System]). Aircraft for monitoring/tracking of the soviet space rockets. Prototype IL-18RTL (1971-1974) and 4 SIPs IL-20RT was converted IL-18s. Registration numbers: SSSR-27220, SSSR-75480 to SSSR-75483. Telemetric antennas (RTS-9, BRS-4) were installed under "hump". In service since 1980. Based at Leninsk airfield in Baikonur Space Center (Baikonur-Kraini). Under control of GUKOS (Chief Directorate of the Space Forces of the Ministry of Defence). Later replaced by SKIP IL-76 (type 976) aircrafts and sold to air force and navy for different purposes. Long-range civilian reconnaisance aircraft (N for Нить). 2 aircraft were converted from IL-18D (SSSR-75466 and SSSR75449) for GosNII GA (State Scientific-Research Institute of the Civilian Aviation) to ice-reconnaissance in Arctic and fish shoals detection. Equiped with SLAR Нить-K [Thread] variant (civilian?) of the SLAR Игла-1 [Needle] from IL-20 in under-fuselage pod. Maritime reconnaissance & anti-submarine warfare aircraft (MR & ASW) with two bays for bombs PLAB-250-120 (since 1991 KAB PL 250-120 Загон), sonobuoys RGB -1, 2, 3, mines and two torpedos AT-1, -2 (since 1981 AT-3), MAD, searching and aiming radar Беркут [Golden Eagle] in under-fuselage bulge. First prototype - 09.1960, second - 1961 (with forward shifted wing). Serial production since 1967. In service of the Soviet Navy Aviation since 03.1968. 58 aircraft were built until 02.1972. Aircrew: 6 airmen. In service: - 145 ОПЛАП ДД AСФ Northern Fleet Aviation, Severomorsk-1, 1967-27 ОПЛАЭ AБФ Baltic Fleet Aviation, Skulte near Riga, 1971-77 ОПЛАП ДД AТОФ Pacific Fleet Aviation, Nikolayevka, 1971 In 1993 all regiments were disbanded, aircraft shifted to Naval Aviation Training Centre at Ostrov. Export and foreign service: five were sold to India (3-1977, 2-1983) for Indian Navy Air Force (Bharatiya Nau Sena), three served between 1968 and 1972 in egyptian Mersah Matruh base (United Arab Republic; in 90th ODRAE with Be-12), a pairs of s were operated from Somali (1972 and 1976), Yemen (1980), Ethiopia (1981) and Libya (1982). Two were lost in 1984 in Asmara, when ethiopian-erytrean war begin. In 1991 two were inherited from USSR by Ukraine (not flying). Two were lost in accidents in 1994. One serial converted to experimental aircraft (1970-1971), modernised maritime reconnaissance & antisubmarine warfare with searching and aiming radar Коршун-M [Kite] from Tu-142, installed under fuselage in first bomb bay, air-refueling capabilities (probe) and new MAD Бор-1С [Bit of the drill]. Second was equiped with internal fuel tanks and suspended pod UPAZ-38 produced by Zvezda (UPAZ was used for the first time in Soviet aircraft). Program was ended in 1977 and was NOT realised on serial s. However, since 1990 some s featured radar Изумруд [Emerald], derivated from Korshun-M. N/SD Modernised with Новелла / Sea Dragon (rus. Морский Змей) radar. Aircrew: 7 airmen. N is converted russian (first flight in 04.2001), next three are converted, between 2003 and 2007 indian (first flight of the SD in 07.2003), delivered to India: IN303 and IN305 in 01.2006 and IN 301 in 02.2007. Because Indian Navy lost two aircraft in accident in the end of the year 2002, Russia delivered two its own aircraft for free in 2003. In 2007 both were converted to SD (IN306, IN307). In 2008 were 5 aircrafts SD in Indian Navy. Indian ILs are armed with two missiles on underwing pylons. 5 Notes: All maritime radars for soviet/russian aircrafts are produced by Leninets in Moskov. All variants of IL-18 were produced by Знамиа Труда facilities. Russian are NOT modernised. Russian IL-20 maybe will be modernised: in the end of 2007 in Zhukovsky was photographed Ilyushin with many new antennas, but it s not clear or is it an upgraded IL-20 or just an experimental plane. MR - maritime reconnaissance ASW - anti-submarine warfare MAD - magnetic anomaly detector ELINT - electronic intelligence SLAR - side-looking airborne radar
