Introduction Learning about bugs is fun with the patterns and projects in this book. Children will practice colouring, cutting, pasting and will develop creative skills as they make bug masks, puppets, labels and more. Name Tags and Labels Reproduce the bug name tags throughout this book for children to wear during excursions or to label their cubbies and desks. Provide children with crayons or textas and scissors to colour and cut out their name tags and labels. Team Tags and Wristbands Identify team members for play or study activities with team tags and team wristbands. Team Tags: Provide each child with a paper circle and a bug counter. Have children colour, cut out and glue their counters to each of their construction paper circles. Use a safety pin to attach a team tag to each child s shirt. Wristbands: Measure and cut a wristband for each child. Provide children with bug counters to glue to their wristbands. Headbands Measure and cut a headband for each child. Provide crayons, textas, scissors and glue for children to colour and cut out bug patterns to glue to their headbands. Help each child staple the ends of his or her headband to fit. Paper Bag and Stick Puppets Reproduce bug patterns for children to colour and cut out. Provide each child with either a paper bag or paint stirrer to tape to the back of his or her bug. Bug Flags Each child will need a large sheet of construction paper, a bug pattern of his or her choice, a paint stirrer or wooden rod and wool. Have children colour, cut out and glue a bug or bugs to the centre of a sheet of paper. Help each child cut fringe along the bottom of his or her flag. Staple each child s flag to a paint stirrer or wooden rod. Cut and tie a length of wool to each end of the stirrer or rod for hanging. 2003 Hawker Brownlow Education 5 #MMA-2138 Bugs and Butterflies

Ants Ants are black, brown or red insects with six legs. Ants are very strong. They can carry loads many times heavier than themselves. Ants live and work together in groups called colonies. There are more ants on earth than any other insect. Ant Mask Reproduce a poster paper ant mask pattern (page 13) for each child. Provide crayons, textas, scissors and three pipecleaners for children to make their masks. Help each child cut out eye holes and punch a hole at each X. Cut and tie a length of wool through each hole. Then insert pipe-cleaner legs. My Pet Ant Each child will need three pompoms, pipecleaners, a pair of wiggly eyes, scissors and glue. Have children glue three pompoms together to form an ant body as shown. When the glue has dried, help each child cut, bend and glue four pipecleaners for three pairs of legs and one set of antennae to their pompom ant bodies. Ant Races Copy the four lane ant race game board shown below or design one of your own. Have children make pompom pet ants (see above) to use as game markers. Provide a die for 2 to 4 children to race their ants to the finish line. Clothes Peg Ants Reproduce the ant pattern below for each child. Provide crayons and scissors for children to colour and cut out the ants. Then help children glue their ants to clothes pegs. Attach ants to hats, coats, book covers and window blinds.
