[Hawaii Rev. Stat., ch. 457, 457-8.5(5)] An applicant for recognition as an advanced practice registered nurse must send certain information to the board of nursing, including: "An official complete transcript of the master's degree in clinical nursing or nursing science sent directly from the school, or evidence of current certification in the nursing specialty sent directly from the recognized national certifying body...." [Board of Nursing Admin. Rules, R 338.10404(1)(c)] "Specialty certification" is not required to practice, but does entitle a provider to use the title "nurse anesthetist." [Board of Nursing Admin. Rules, R 338.10403] Therefore, according to the Michigan Association of Nurse Anesthetists (MANA), while you are not required to obtain specialty certification, you could not use any title that included "nurse anesthetist" without specialty certification. Practically speaking, the MANA indicates that hospitals would be reluctant to employ perpetually uncertified anesthetists due to increased liability and reimbursement problems. A nurse may be categorized as either a (1) Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) or (2) Registered Nurse Anesthetist (RNA). (1) "A Registered Nurse who has graduated from an approved program of Nurse Anesthesia and has successfully passed the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists Certification Boards shall be known as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist - CRNA." [Code of West Virginia, sec. 30-7-1(a)] Wisconsin Yes, under certain circumstances Nurse anesthetists are required to be currently certified by a national certifying body approved by the board [of nursing] to use the title advanced practice nurse or to be an advanced practice nurse prescriber. [Wisconsin Admin. Code, ch. N8, sec. N 8.02(1)(b) and N 8.03(2)] According to the Wisconsin Association of Nurse Anesthetists (WANA), legal counsel for the Wisconsin Department of Regulation and Licensure/Board of Nursing has indicated that a nurse anesthetist is not required to be an advanced practice nurse or an advanced practice nurse prescriber. An uncertified nurse anesthetist could not use the title advanced practice nurse and would not be eligible to become an advanced practice nurse prescriber. Bear in mind, however, that many facilities may not be willing to utilize perpetually uncertified nurse anesthetists.
