Atomic Structure 1. Draw a detailed labelled diagram of an atom of nitrogen. Include the names of the fundamental particles, their relative charges and masses. Write down the electron configuration of nitrogen. 2. Draw simple dot and cross diagrams and write down the electron configurations of the following elements: C, Ca, Li 3. Label your periodic table with group names (where applicable) and group numbers, label the energy levels (period numbers), indicate which are metals, non-metals and the transition metals. 4. Explain how the group number and the period number relate to the electron configuration of an atom.

What are the chemical tests for the following anions and cations? Chloride ion, Cl - Bromide ion, Br - Iodide ion, I - Sulfate ion, SO4 2- Carbonate ion, CO3 2- Alkane and alkene What is the test? What is the positive result Complete the following GENERAL equations: Metal + acid Alkali + acid Metal oxide + acid Metal carbonate + acid Alcohol + acid Which SALTs do these acids make? Acid name Acid formula Salt suffix Salt anion Hydrochloric acid HCl chloride Cl - Sulfuric acid Nitric acid Phosphoric acid Ethanoic acid What are the equations for: Atom Economy: Percentage Yield:

Writing Formulae and balanced symbol equations Before you can start work on moles (amount of substance) you need to know how to interpret equations and formula. A-level chemists only ever write balanced symbol equations and you need to know a whole range of formula off by heart. These tasks will help you to achieve this. 1. Write a definition and give an example for the following terms: formula, molecule, ion (anion, cation), ionic compound, metallic bonding, macromolecule 2. How do you deduce the charge of a monatomic ion from its location in the periodic table? (Hint: Think of the number of electrons in the outer shell). Add the charges of the ions in each group to your periodic table. 3. Find out and write down the formula of the following molecular compounds (you need to memorise these): methane, oxygen, hydrogen, chlorine, ammonia, hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, nitric acid, phosphoric acid. 4. Find out and write down the formula and overall charge of the following polyatomic ions (you need to memorise these): chloride, ammonium, sulfate, nitrate, phosphate, carbonate, hydrogen carbonate. 5. What are the formula of these anions: hydride, sulfide, nitride (think about oxide)?

Here is a table showing you the charges on ions that you can use to write your formulae: Positive +1 +2 +3 lithiuim Li + magnesium Mg 2+ iron (III) Fe 3+ sodium Na + calcium Ca 2+ aluminium Al 3+ potassium K + barium Ba 2+ silver Ag + iron (II) Fe 2+ nickel Ni 2+ copper (II) Cu 2+ hydrogen H + zinc Zn 2+ ammonium + NH 4 lead Pb 2+ Negative -1-2 -3 nitride N 3- Generally metals Generally nonmetals hydroxide chloride bromide iodide nitrate nitrite hydrogencarbonate OH - Cl - Br - I - NO 3 - NO 2 - HCO 3 - oxide sulfide sulfite sulfate carbonate O 2- S 2- SO 3 2- SO 4 2- CO 3 2- TASK 1 WRITING FORMULAS OF IONIC COMPOUNDS Silver bromide Sodium carbonate Potassium oxide Iron (III) oxide Chromium(III) chloride Calcium hydroxide Aluminium nitrate Sodium sulfate Lead(II) oxide Sodium phosphate Zinc hydrogencarbonate Ammonium sulfate Gallium hydroxide Strontium selenide Radium sulfate Sodium nitride TASK 2 WRITING FORMULAS 1 Lead(IV) oxide Copper Sodium Ammonium chloride Ammonia Sulfur Sulfuric acid Neon Ammonium phosphate Silicon Barium hydroxide Tin(IV) chloride Silver nitrate Iodine Nitrogen oxide Hydrogen sulfide Titanium(IV) oxide Iodine Calcium phosphate Methane
