UNIFORM CRIME REPORTS (UCR) Offenses that make up the Uniform Crime Report are used nationally as a measure of the nation s crime index. Murder Rape Robbery Aggravated assault Arson Auto Theft Burglary Theft When national crime statistics are mentioned in general terms, it is Part 1 crimes they speak of. Part 1 crimes are reported quarterly to the FBI as they relate to every 1000 residents of the city. Orem s crime numbers are very good when compared to cities of similar size across the nation. Year after year, Orem is ranked nationally by Morgan Quitno as one of the safest of all cities in America. That group compares crime statistics from over 350 cities in the United States to determine rankings for safety. In 2004, Orem was again ranked amongst the top 25 safest cities in which to live. The following charts reflect a 13-year history of Part 1 crimes in Orem. 25

During 2004 the department responded to more than 500 reports of domestic abuse, more than 1000 family fights, and more than 500 cases of reported child abuse or neglect within the family. The chart (left) indicates reported instances of those terrible occurrences over a ten-year period. 31
As the chart (above) indicates, most theft reports taken by the department fall into these general categories. There was a 15 percent decrease in the number of reported cases of vandalism during 2004 from the previous year. Vandalism cost victims time, money, and heartache. It s a senseless crime committed by people who weren t taught, or didn t learn, basic lessons at home about respecting the property of others. If you see someone committing vandalism or painting graffiti, please report it promptly to the police. 32
